Santa Fe Indian School Prepares for FLOTUS Visit

    Frances Madeson
    5/19/16
Santa Fe Indian School Principal Dr. Felisa Gulibert was searching for just the right words to convey her school’s response to First Lady Michelle Obama’s acceptance of their invitation to address the 2016 graduating class on May 26. “Elation,” she finally said, “leavened with gratitude. The First Lady’s presence and her message will have an indelible, historical, and profound impact upon the future of these graduates and the rest of our Native American youths.”

As much as possible under the extraordinary circumstances, the school is working to make this a graduation much like any other. “Our focus is on the graduates,” explained Kimball Sekaquaptewa, who is coordinating the media participation. “This day is for them.” Each of the 106 graduates will have 17 or 18 tickets to distribute to family and friends; it is expected that every one of the 2,660 seats in the Pueblo Pavilion will be filled. All 19 governors of the pueblos who own and operate the school will be there in traditional dress to shake the hands of each and every graduate. There will be the usual Native dancing, after which the students will change into their caps and gowns. There will be a traditional feast beforehand, not after, to accommodate Mrs. Obama’s schedule. The Valedictorian and Salutatorian have not yet been selected, testing is ongoing; but they will each have 15 minutes to address their fellow classmates and wider community.

Dem mocks Trump’s ‘short fingers’ on House floor
    May 24, 2016, 01:23 pm

A House Democrat worked in a taunt about the size of Donald Trump’s hands while blasting the presumptive GOP nominee for saying he’d take advantage of the housing market crash.

In a House floor speech on Tuesday, Rep. Dina Titus (D-Nev.) called on the real estate mogul to apologize for comments made in 2007 counseling Trump University students to use the housing bubble as an investment opportunity.

“He rooted for that bubble to burst. Well, the crash in the housing market devastated my hometown of Las Vegas, which was one of the hardest hit in the country,” Titus said, noting that thousands of people in her district lost their homes as a result of the housing bubble’s burst.
    […]
Titus concluded her remarks by taking aim at a sore topic for Trump.
“We say to Mr. Trump: Keep your short fingers out of the Nevada housing market,” she said.

Rep. Rodney Davis (R-Ill.), who was presiding over House floor proceedings, admonished Titus afterward for personally criticizing Trump.
“The chair would remind members to refrain from engaging in personalities toward presumptive nominees for the office of president,” Davis said.

Three other Democrats – Reps. Dan Kildee (Mich.), Jared Polis (Colo.) and Tim Ryan (Ohio) – joined Titus in attacking Trump for saying the housing market crisis would be a prime real estate opportunity.

“Shame! Shame that we have a major leader of a major party rooting against families in Ohio, in Pennsylvania, in Florida, in Colorado. Shame on you, Mr. Trump. You’re supposed to be rooting for the American people, not rooting against them,” Ryan said.

“The chair would like to remind members once again to refrain from engaging in personalities toward the presumptive nominees for the office of president,” Davis said after each of their floor speeches, with a hint of impatience growing in his voice.

Campaign manager: Trump ‘proud’ to pay ‘lowest tax rate possible’
    20 min ago

Corey Lewandowski, campaign manager for presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, told CBS News today that the real estate tycoon pays “the lowest possible” amount in federal income taxes, saying that it highlights his business acumen.

“Mr. Trump is proud to pay a lower tax rate, the lowest tax rate possible,” Lewandowski said. “He is going to pay the smallest amount of taxes possible, which I think the American people also understand. Every deduction possible. He fights for every single dollar.”

“That’s the mindset you want to bring to the government.”

‘Kris Jenner U’ Scrubs Its Social Media After Daily Beast Expose
    05.23.16 11:35 PM ET

Hours after The Daily Beast published claims by New York state that Jenner’s B-school is the same entity as a shady European diploma mill, Legacy Business School had scrubbed its social feeds.

Kris Jenner’s new business school, Legacy Business School, began scrubbing content from its social media pages on Monday, hours after The Daily Beast reported claims by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) that the organization is the rebranded European School of Economics, which had been operating a campus in New York State illegally for years.

The Kardashian mom is the new chairwoman and face of the school, which is based in Trump Tower and costs up to $105,360 per year for a non-degree certificate. Legacy Business School’s Facebook and Instagram pages had been deleted and marked as private respectively on Monday afternoon.

How many Black children were raised by Big Mama and Granddaddy, that don’t turn out to be self-hating sociopaths?
From all accounts, the grandfather was a hard working man who had his own small business.
Spare me about Mama not being around.

I am glad to say that I NEVER supported him.

From the moment I read the account of him going up in front of a group of his White paymasters and deriding his sister for being on welfare, all the while knowing WHY she had to go on welfare…

    I KNEW who he was.

Nothing else that he has done has altered my belief in the lack of his character.

Whose Precious Giant Newborn is This?

    Awesomely Luvvie — May 24, 2016

All babies are precious and beautiful and all that good stuff. Let me state that out the gate. So yesterday, I was scrolling through Facebook when I came upon the picture of a newborn who came out the womb at 15 pounds. FIFTEEN POUNDS. Look:

Jesus be a fence around this baby’s mother’s Love Pocket. May it recover, in His MIGHTY name. I IMMEJATELY started doing kegels upon seeing the picture because I got stressed by proxy. Goodness. I mean.

Fueled By Young Voters, Asian-Americans Increasingly Identify As Democrats
    May 24, 20168:00 AM ET

Asian-Americans are shifting toward the Democratic Party in record numbers, according to a new poll conducted by a consortium of Asian-American organizations — AAPI Data, Asian and Pacific Islander American Vote and Asian Americans Advancing Justice.

In fact, since 2012, there’s been a 12 point increase in the percent of Asian-Americans who identify as Democrat — from 35 percent to 47 percent.

Asian-Americans overwhelmingly supported Barack Obama in 2012 — 73 percent to 26 percent — so these latest poll numbers suggest a crystallization of party ID among people who perhaps already lean Democrat.

From Charles Blow re: the pic above

This is one of the most important pictures I’ve ever posted (even though it’s blurry and not the best). First, today was my son’s (in the striped tie) commencement from Yale. His major was an Ecology and Evolutionary Biology major. He plans to go to medical school. But the men in that picture are of his “League of Extraordinary Gentlemen” who serve as his counsel and guides and role models, the sentinels who formed a protective hedge around him, willing to protect him with ferocity of the grizzly in “The Revenant.” Father, godfather, uncles, men he called uncle, mentors, teachers, doctors, family friends, my coworkers, barbers. So many men in his life. They were available for him to talk to when he didn’t want to talk to me. What he didn’t know was that we took counsel with each other, figuring out the best advice to give and how to reinforce each other’s messages. That’s sometimes what it takes. Folks say it take a village to raise a child. Well, these are some of the warriors in my son’s village.
