Ken Burns at Stanford (on Trump):

” … For 216 years, our elections, though bitterly contested, have featured the philosophies and character of candidates who were clearly qualified. That is not the case this year. One is glaringly not qualified. So before you do anything with your well-earned degree, you must do everything you can to defeat the retrograde forces that have invaded our democratic process, divided our house, to fight against, no matter your political persuasion, the dictatorial tendencies of the candidate with zero experience in the much maligned but subtle art of governance; who is against lots of things, but doesn’t seem to be for anything, offering only bombastic and contradictory promises, and terrifying Orwellian statements; a person who easily lies, creating an environment where the truth doesn’t seem to matter; who has never demonstrated any interest in anyone or anything but himself and his own enrichment; who insults veterans, threatens a free press, mocks the handicapped, denigrates women, immigrants and all Muslims; a man who took more than a day to remember to disavow a supporter who advocates white supremacy and the Ku Klux Klan; an infantile, bullying man who, depending on his mood, is willing to discard old and established alliances, treaties and long-standing relationships … “

    PostEverything
In Brock Turner’s home town, we’re raising kids who are never told ‘no’

I live in Oakwood, Ohio, the home of the Stanford sex offender. Communities like this one have a dark side.

    By Kate Geiselman June 8

An alternate version of the Brock Turner sexual assault story has been spinning in my imagination since last January, when I first heard of his arrest.

In my version, he recognizes that what happened on Stanford’s campus behind that dumpster last year was rape. He comes to understand that intoxication is not consent. He takes responsibility for his violent “action” that irreparably harmed another human being, instead of blaming it on alcohol. Rather than spending a year and a half honing his story, making excuses and lawyering up, he pleads guilty. He looks his victim squarely in the eyes and says: “I’m sorry. I had no business putting my hands on or in you after you were no longer able to give consent. I should have helped you to safety instead of running and lying about why I did. I will do everything I can to spare you any further pain. I will spend the rest of my life educating young people about consent and sexual violence.”

Then he serves his punishment, perhaps a sentence mitigated by his understanding of the crime, his taking responsibility, even his character references — because he gets it. He bears the weight of his guilt and in doing so eases the burden of his victim.

But that’s not what happened. And because I live in the community that spawned Brock Turner, I have known on some level for many months that my version would never be reality.

    FACTS:
    SHOOTER WAS AMERICAN
    SHOOTING OCCURED IN AMERICA
    SHOOTER WAS NOT RELIGIOUS
SHOOTER TARGETED GLGBT COMMUNITY IN AMERICA
SHOOTER CARRIED AND USED GUN HE BOUGHT IN AMERICA
    SHOOTER CARRIED OUT DOMETIC TERRORISM

    IT’S A FUCKING AMERICAN PROBLEM

    PERIOD

  11. Ametia says:

So we’re clear, no other country’s folk could be more OPENLY HOMPHOBIC than America’s so-called rightwing Evangelicals.

  12. Notice this? When a Muslim is involved in mass shooting, they’re ISIS inspired but Dylann Roof’s terrorism is not KKK inspired. #AMERIKKKA

    • Ametia says:

      THESE MASS KILLINGS ARE AMERICAN-INSPIRED.

Segment of HATE, that Trump and other right-winger and his minions have been fueling for ions

  13. Ametia says:

POTUS will be speaking today on these KILLINGS.

  14. Don’t even think abt blaming all Muslims for this horrific crime. Black people didn’t blame all white people for Dylann Roof’s terrorist act.

  15. Good morning, everyone.

To wake up to this horror is just too much. America and these damn guns. Designing weapons to rip through the body causing tissue damage is pure wicked.

  18. Ametia says:

Churches, malls, schools, clubs. Is there any place left in America where we can go and not have some deranged killer enter and shoot up the place?

But of course the NRA will retort: get yourself a gun! IT FUCKED UP

  19. Ametia says:

I’m sorry, but I frankly don’t want to hear from congress critters!

Alan Grayson, Marco Rubio, Gov Rick Scott, these are the very folks who can ACT to get gun legislation passed, but would rather line their pockets with NRA $$$ and hide behind the nonsensical INTERPRETATION of the 2ND AMENDMENT.

Save your fucking prayers, congress folks, and DO THE RIGHT THING.

      ON POINT. It’s the saying

      They came for…

      JEWS, BLACKS, GAYS

Religion based on ANTI- PEOPLE is a LIVING RECIPE for DEATH & DESTRUCTION.

      • Liza says:

The answer eludes me, these massacres are so beyond my comprehension.

The haters have free speech, the psychopaths have access to any type of gun, including weapons intended for war.

I keep thinking that pictures of these massacres are going to have to be publicized. It was the pictures that stoked the flames of public outrage to help bring an end to the war in Vietnam. Honestly, I can’t think of anything else.

  21. Ametia says:

Here’s how this mass killing will go down:

    1. Outrage, prayers to family, victims

    2. MEDIA is salivating for coverage of this worst mass shooting in U.S HISTORY; will continue distorting, manipulating and fear-mongering with their reporting

    3. President Obama will make a statement in the coming hour/days

    4. Political whores-will come on the scene claiming they were right about BANNING ALL
MUSLIMS. *LOOKING@YOUTRUMP* just in time to pump up the rabid supporters

    5. NRA has its defense ready, because ‘people kill people’ not guns

6 AG Lynch will make a statement, on what, who knows?

    7. PBO will visit Orlando, possibly & meet with families of the victims & attend funerals

    WASH.RINSE.

    REPEAT!

I couldn’t stand Lionel Richie. Then he made the best speech ever at an awards show you can’t see.
    By Geoff Edgers

NEW YORK – “This is the top of the line,” Lionel Richie said Thursday night, as he held the Songwriters Hall of Fame lifetime achievement award. “I’m going to have to say that this is the best night of my entire life as a songwriter.”

It was a stunning wrap to the best entertainment-world acceptance speech I’ve ever heard. And it came from Richie, for whom, I confess, I never felt the love. In the super-funk era of the Commodores, he was the soft cheese. In the ‘80s, while he blasted up the charts with “Endless Love” and “Say You, Say Me,” I was listening to the Clash, Thin Lizzy and Elvis Costello. But when I heard his speech, I wanted to rewind the tape and give “Hello” another try.

First, a bit about the Songwriters Hall of Fame induction. Why is it so much better than every other award show? First, it’s not televised. That means no preening for the camera, no shtick, no political speeches, no get-off-the-stage music.
