    The media isn’t going to save the country from Donald Trump. Here’s why.

    Ken Burns isn’t the only one seeking some kind of repeat of Murrow’s efforts; this weekend, I discussed this idea on NPR’s “On the Media” with co-host Bob Garfield. He has been arguing that Trump is so profoundly anti-democratic that he can’t be treated like any other candidate, and that everyone in the media — not just opinion writers like me but reporters as well — needs to stand up and call him what he is and make clear the threat that he poses.

    The trouble I have with that recommendation is that I’m not sure just what it would look like in practice. Does it just mean turning the questions journalists have been asking into statements? Instead of asking “Isn’t what you said racist?” they could just assert, “What you said is racist.” They certainly could do that. But what effect would that really have?

    And with all due respect to Burns, whose sentiments about Trump I share, the idea that we’re waiting for a courageous Murrow-like figure to finally “expose” Donald Trump is absurd. What is it exactly about Trump that we have yet to be told? That he’s a bigot who appeals to voters’ basest instincts? That he’s an ignoramus and a fool? That his ideas about how government operates are ludicrous? That he regularly proposes things that are not only unconstitutional but an obscene affront to fundamental American ideals? That his business career is filled with fraud? That a Trump presidency would be a horror show in too many ways to count?

    Well guess what: all those things have been written, spoken, explained, and shouted thousands and thousands of times during the year of Trump’s candidacy. The real problem people like Burns who are waiting for the media to save us have isn’t that Trump hasn’t been “exposed,” it’s that he’s been amply exposed, but that exposure hasn’t done him the damage they would have hoped.

    I certainly share their distress. It would be much more heartening if, after having gotten a look at Trump, 90 percent of Americans reacted with the disgust he so deserves. Or even 80 or 70 or 60 percent. The fact that it hasn’t happened isn’t because key facts about Trump are being hidden, or because no one has confronted him on the noxious brew of hate and fear that spews out of his mouth every day. It hasn’t happened because a lot of Americans are just fine with what Trump is offering. There’s a good-size market for xenophobia, bigotry, misogyny, and a crypto-fascist approach to government unconcerned about the niceties of constitutional democracy. And there are many people who are a little uncomfortable with Trump, but will tolerate him if it means that Republicans can be in charge.

    Pelosi Statement on Republicans’ Vote to Block ‘No Fly, No Buy’ Bill

    Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement after Republicans voted today to block action on H.R. 1076, the bipartisan “No Fly, No Buy” legislation authored by Republican Congressman Peter King:

    “It is appalling that days after our nation has suffered such a terrible attack, Republicans would vote to protect suspected terrorists’ ability to arm themselves to the teeth at American gun stores.

    “Republicans’ decision to block the bipartisan ‘No Fly, No Buy’ bill is dangerous and indefensible. If you’re too dangerous to fly, you’re too dangerous to buy a gun. Yet on 12 different occasions, Republicans have voted to block this common sense step to keep the American people safe from terror.

    “We have no right to hold moments of silence without days of action to honor the victims of gun violence. House Democrats will continue to demand that we close the scandalous ‘No Fly, No Buy’ loophole immediately.”

    Should ask this question 10 times in a row. And, get it all on tape.

    Senate Republicans have tried to work with Donald Trump. They’ve offered gentle advice and firm guidance, hoping he’ll morph into a general election candidate who won’t kill their chances of keeping the Senate, or better yet, will give Hillary Clinton a run for her money.

    None of it has worked. And now a palpable mix of despair and resignation has permeated the Senate Republican Conference. Many lawmakers are openly frustrated, and refusing to defend the comments and actions of their own standard-bearer, the man they’ve endorsed for president.

    Trump’s insinuation that Obama may be sympathetic to Islamic State terrorists was the final straw for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.).

    “I’m not going to be commenting on the presidential candidates today,” the Kentucky Republican said Tuesday, in an abrupt reversal after several weeks of weighing in on Trump’s performance, particularly the ways he believed the candidate needed to improve.

    McConnell’s No. 2, Majority Whip John Cornyn (R-Texas), declared he was done talking about Trump until after the election — nearly five months away.

    “Wish me luck,” he said.

    Trump again shows why he’s unfit to be president

    In the wake of the horror in Orlando on Saturday night, Donald Trump again showed just why he is unfit to hold the highest office in the land. Trump is in fact the best argument against Trump.

    He has the temperament of a child; in fact, a very specific child: the attention-seeking bully on the playground who slaps around anyone who criticizes him or gets in his way. Is this really a person who can be trusted with the nuclear codes? Responsible Republicans should refuse to support him. Not just because of his statements in the wake of Orlando, but because of his long trail of embarrassments that made the Orlando statements no surprise to anyone.

    A federal appeals court has voted to uphold a series of strict new rules for Internet providers, handing a major victory to regulators in the fight over net neutrality and ensuring that one of the most sweeping changes to hit the industry in recent years will likely remain on the books.

    The 2-1 court ruling Tuesday forces Internet providers such as Verizon and Comcast to obey federal regulations that ban the blocking or slowing of Internet traffic to consumers. The regulations from the Federal Communications Commission also forbid carriers from selectively speeding up websites that agree to pay the providers a fee — a tactic critics have said could unfairly tilt the commercial playing field against startups and innovators who may not be able to afford it.

    More broadly, the decision affirms Washington’s ability to regulate Internet providers like legacy telephone companies. Approved in a bitterly partisan vote last year, the move by the FCC to “reclassify” Internet providers significantly expanded the agency’s role in overseeing the industry. It opened up Internet providers to all-new obligations they were not subject to before, such as privacy requirements that all telecom companies currently follow in order to protect consumers’ personal data.

      In the GOP playbook, these Congressional people believe that they just need to sell the ISIS/”radical” Islam connection, ignore the obvious hate crime against the LGBT community, and their supporters will never fault them for all the money they take from the gun lobby or failing to pass even the most basic, reasonable gun control legislation.
      Because the obvious conclusion is that if ISIS did this, then we need more guns not fewer.

      I don’t know the latest on Hillary, but yesterday she was talking out of both sides of her mouth again. “Radical” Islam on one side and ban AR-15 type assault weapons on the other. The newly minted “progressive” Hillary just can’t figure it out, what to say that is.

        Between the media pushing ISIS this and that, running from this being a domestic terrorist and hate crime – victims being LGBT and mostly POC, I’m just ugggh
        Media and Congress scared to take on NRA. I had to turn my TV off early last night.

        And yes, Team Obama better needs to work with Hillary on how to respond to these things without feeding into R talking points. I know, tough sell.
