    I hadn’t taken Obama’s statement that a post-EU UK would have to go ‘to the back of the line’ for trade negotiations that seriously. I’d seen it as more a nudge to ward off any expectation that trade relations with the US would be instantly restored on some crash course negotiation. But the possibility of the break-up of the UK itself (which seems like a very real possibility to me over the 4 to 5 year time horizon) hadn’t occurred to me as a drag on potential negotiations.

    Overall, I liked your post about Brexit. I will have to say though that I’m doubtful the US will make a deal with the UK outside the EU a priority.
    1) If Brexit makes it look like the UK may split apart within 5 years, the opportunity costs of negotiating with the UK just are high. USTR isn’t that large an office, so negotiations with the likes of EU states (TTIP) and China are probably going to take a higher priority when deciding how to use scarce resources. TPP will probably have to go back to the negotiating table somehow for another round of negotiations if it’s going to pass the next Congress. A temporary US-UK deal may not be worth the manpower. If anything, we’ll probably be more concerned about where to locate the UK’s nukes that are currently located in Scotland.
    2) My general impression from the people I know at USTR is that the failure of TPP (and also the Sanders and Trump campaigns) has left a lot of people there shellshocked. USTR needs a win for it to be taken seriously, but spending time on negotiating with a country that might not exist in 5 years would just look foolish.

    3) The next president also doesn’t want to intentionally annoy the major EU states. The next British PM is probably going to be weak until elections are held. Chances are Clinton (if she wins) will care more about our productive relationship with people like Merkel than some blowhard like Boris Johnson, who is just a bull in a china shop. The major remaining EU states together – Germany, France, Spain, Italy and Poland – matter to us more than the UK by itself. These EU states and the EU as a whole would be annoyed by the US playing nice with a country that just openly insulted Europe. If anything, the EU will want to increase the economic pain on the UK to create disincentives to leaving. That is why EU officials are talking already about fast-tracking the UK’s exit.

      At some point, we need to stop taking the slanted, desperate-to-affect-outcomes, know-it-all, wishful thinking analysis of every agenda-driven Tom, Dick and Harry as pertinent or Gospel-truth…

      Try as we all may, all the skewed analysis …including attempts to control the debate…explain away outcomes by downplaying certain glaring aspects, and playing up the convenient bits they want or prefer… re-framing the reality of things and only to reach our preferred outcomes….including cherry-picking quotes of random ‘remorseful uninformed’ voters, don’t mean jack…

      When everyone tries to play God…when everyone wants desperately to control others…control narratives…to rule the minds of as many fellow human beings …but only so they go along with what the god-complex afflicted folks would rather… and not because of some high-minded, greater good or purpose..but rather, for ego, to be proven right…to hold on to power…to power play and to polish up staked positions and legacies…

      Brexit happens…and stuff and fallout like this …it’s only just getting started…

      Oh wow…look…the British economy shrunk today…they went from being the 5th largest economy, to being wait for it…the 6th largest economy …(oh heavens!)…following a certain vote that was bound to rattle the markets temporarily of course…

      The effort to scare folks …to bombard them with only one preferred point of view while consciously shutting down any other smart but contradictory perspective that doesn’t coincide with what they’re actively pushing and trying to force-feed the masses..

      Manipulation…desperate, brazen manipulation…

      Even more amusing is listening to so-called ‘experts’ who are as invested as the politicians they are close to and potentially stand to gain favors with…listening to these carefully handpicked ‘experts’ give as one of their arguments against Brexit…that Brits will have to now negotiate their own trade deals which was previously done by Brussels (the EU)…how tedious that work is, and just how would the U.K deal with having to now assume those ‘tedious’ roles and do their own negotiating and heavy-lifting…As if…

      How insulting that this presumes that the U.K is too lazy and incapable of doing their own work…

      Ultimately, the bottom line is that the powers that be are petrified and determined to maintain the status quo…and it’s all about their investments…money…power…control..

      They are ultimately determined to make sure that Brexit is messy, difficult …make sure common folks suffer so badly for it …just to make a point…teach them a lesson…etc…They’ve even said as much bold-faced and brazenly…

      They especially don’t want to give other disenchanted EU countries the idea that it’s easy to leave…and what better way than to artificially manipulate, complicate…undermine and sabotage as much as possible…the U.K’s departure …driving home the argument that if Great Britain couldn’t pull it off…how on earth would those other smaller countries…

      We’re at a place where sabotage is wielded easily and often to ultimately achieve a particular desired result and send strong messages…this even by supposedly high-minded, ‘moral’ leaders…

      They are especially petrified that Brexit will be a harbinger of things to come…that the same populist sentiments could propel Trump…not because he is loved or right, but precisely because he isn’t establishment-endorsed and backed and invested in like Hillary….that what drove the success of Brexit will ultimately drive Trump into the Oval office…And they are more interested in, invested in and united in saving Hillary’s political ambitions and their political, financial and power investments by extension …more than they are about addressing the larger issues and concerns at play here for the masses …issues they instead dismissively and glibly reduce to simply old white racists raging at changing societies … meanwhile Hillary is conveniently out of sight as usual…waiting for the dust to settle before testing out her expensive advisers prepared versions of aggregated results of poll-tested outcomes and statements..

      We can all take away what we want from all of this…but for goodness sake, let’s not take each other for fools…

      In the end, this is all being driven by politicians with their own various self-serving agenda primarily at heart…this has nothing to do with you, me, or the greater good…

      David Cameron and Boris Johnson are infinitely more alike and more connected and united in what guides and motivates them …they are both entitled Tories for goodness sake…Boris may be a blowhard, but so is David Cameron truth be told…momentarily playing pal of convenience with President Obama does not change that for a second…Boris is however, like it or not… one smart cookie…infinitely smarter than David Cameron…but David is a more rehearsed politician who has over time tried to sell a more ‘moderate’ Tory image …much in the same way George Bush tried to sell the laughable ‘compassionate conservative’ tripe…

      And just as I’ve often said and I’ll keep repeating…Trump = Hillary = Romney = any number of equally racist politicians and the operatives trotted out to tsk tsk at Trump’s supposed racism while arguing Armageddon…Hillary as the only choice…

      The truth is, they are all no different really…and in the end, it doesn’t really matter who sits in that Oval office or any seat of power for that matter…the real powers that be ultimately have their say…and their ways of manipulating and controlling outcomes and things…they’d just rather make things just that much easier and seamless for themselves by installing their preferred trained, well-rehearsed and beholden puppet to begin with…Trump would be ideal too if he weren’t just as megalomaniac as the owners…and way too unreliable when it comes to carrying out orders…

      In a time where so many erstwhile ‘honorable’ and formerly ‘credible’ folks preemptively sold out and took very dubious stands based on obvious arm-twisting and horse trading…and staked their integrity and moral high ground …and aligned with very faulty and very troublesome and disturbing pre-Trump on the horizon…pre-planned coronation shenanigans…

      Things look pretty, pretty bleak …and at this point, there are those so jaded, so cynical and so ground down…there have just about nothing left to lose…In a time where black kids are routinely murdered in cold blood by cops paid by our tax dollars to protect us…and a black judge paid by our tax dollars turns a blind eye to evil, and sides with murderers…just to keep his cushy position and comfy life going…and even with an abundance of evidence staring everyone in the face, somehow our black Attorney General can never seem to find enough evidence to do anything about anything after reluctantly opening up now predictable default ‘investigations’ and ‘reports’…but is quick to show up and make passionate statements of solidarity with every other demographic when evil visits…

      At this point Brexit is really the least of our problems…but for the powers that be, it only spells trouble for their well-laid plans …and they need to keep their firewalls…their useful idiots activated until November comes and goes…after November, firewalls and those who now pretend to marginally give a damn about them, will return to assured obscurity…and it’ll just be business as usual…they’ll just keep right on murdering our babies…and us…and letting the murderers get away with it …no more need for even the inconvenient farce of mock ‘trials’..

    A network of young, white, privileged people ran hundreds of thousands of dollars-worth of cocaine, pills and other substances through downtown Charleston’s roaring party scene in plain view, the Charleston Post and Courier revealed in an investigative report.

    The ring had been “hiding in plain sight” for years with wealthy young drug dealers — some of them fraternity members — profiting off the area’s booze and drug-filled college town culture. But the ring was sophisticated and large, with different dealers focusing on specific substances. In a raid executed in relation to a connected murder, police turned up $214,000 in cash.

    Samantha Hincks, 26; Daniel Katko, 25; Zackery Kligman, 24; Robert Liljeberg, 22; Benjamin Nauss, 23; Jake Poeschek, 21; Jonathan Reams, 19; Michael Schmidt, 21; and Christopher Sliker, 22, were all arrested as part of the drug ring, the Post and Courier reports.

    The dealers operated steps away from the College of Charleston campus out of multi-million dollar homes, with students and former students packaging pills with a factory-grade press and ingredients bought online. They found drugs via a variety of online and street sources, then found thousands of buyers by way of the college’s downtown night life.

    In London, Conservative leaders tried to co-opt extremists instead of pushing their far-right Euro rebels to join the UK Independence Party. David Cameron’s pre-election promise to hold an EU referendum was a colossal miscalculation designed to appease his own extremists. That short-term tactic led his own country to economic crisis and ended his career.

    In Washington, congressional Republicans thought the Tea Party’s anti-establishment and anti-corporate spirit was fine to ignore as long they helped undermine President Obama.

    Instead of ejecting them to join a third party, they embraced them, including their conspiracy theories about the president’s birth and religion. Now, after alternately ignoring and ridiculing Trump, they are shocked that the leader of the birther conspiracy is their nominee. The GOP’s short-term appeasement has imperiled its own future.

    OH MY GOD let’s get several things straight about Brexit

    1. This vote was NOT called because of dissatisfaction with the EU. This vote was called because Cameron thought he could shut up the internal squabbles in the Tory party by shoving a strong Remain result down the RW’s throat. He failed. He will be forever remembered as the PM who presided over both the breakdown of the EU and the breakdown of the UK. You wouldn’t think his political career could have had a lower moment than fucking a pig, but here we are.

    2. This result was NOT caused by dissatisfaction with “neoliberalism” whatever the hell THAT is supposed to mean in this context. All the austerity measures have come under the conservative government, and the complete decimation of UK manufacturing and blue collar jobs happened under Thatcherism (another Conservative). They very successfully blamed the EU for it with the help of the media.

    3. This result was NOT supported by the Left or anyone else interested in economic justice. This result was supported by xenophobes who were worked into a hysterical frenzy by the media constantly blaming the EU for every single thing that went wrong in the UK, and that has been going on since the EU’s inception.

    4. This result was STRONGLY OPPOSED by the young, (as most people have noticed) AND by the educated (as fewer people are talking about).

    5. If you are a progressive, there is no conscionable way to support this result. If you are concerned about the environment, human rights, and diversity, there is no conscionable way to support this result.

He is holding their hands, while the Father has both hands full with American Girl shopping bags. The thought that these two men have spent the day at the American Girl store- I found that hilarious 😆😊😆

    The usual suspects like Josh Barro and the whole lot of spiteful, hateful Clinton flunkies and surrogates who would have been jumping with glee and chomping at the bit to blame and chip away at President Obama ….up until late last year that is…before they realized that Hillary desperately needed President Obama…and that her fortunes were tied to the President’s…

    How oddly amusing to see and hear them all now…including many in the media…now trying their darndest and doing their delicate nifty dances …trying not to in any way blame or hurt the President…just so Hillary isn’t negatively impacted by extension …

    This has to be the only upside to these elections…those who formerly went out of their way to put down the President any chance they got…but who are now completely invested in and actively rooting for and working on Hillary’s campaign…And need the President to campaign for Hillary…are no longer bashing or blaming him where they previously would…And only because they desperately need the President unblemished …just for Hill…

    Wonders will never cease my friends..

      Once again American media mindfully distorting and selectively cherry-picking and pushing half-truths..

      Farage is UKIP…an extreme right-wing nut in an extreme right wing fringe party that has recently started making head way in Britain…I’ve been following BBC and other British media since last night …and Farage isn’t backing down or apologizing for anything..

      What the American media isn’t sharing, is the fact that this Brexit crossed party lines…That there are high-profile members of the Prime Minister’s own Tory party *and* Cabinet, who were staunchly for Brexit…and that shockingly – but no secret – that there were also members of the Labour party, that were also for Brexit …and they’ve been on t.v, expressing their delight that they won…And they have no regrets…

      The market is responding of course naturally…but even more so to the media hijinks surrounding all of this…and only further hype up by the media doing the bidding of their masters…and their own preferences that hinge on how it all affects them and their owners financially, politically etc..

      The media called it wrong, and as usual, they are trying to at least make the fall-out from it, just as they predicted…so they’ve stayed on it…sharing every imagining of every worst case scenario they can cook up or conceive…

      The manipulation never stops…and people who know, see through it…and see it all for what it really is…It’s less about the fate of the EU and Great Britain…and a lot about the bruised egos of politicians and the media themselves…God forbid they don’t get their way…or they are proved wrong ..ever..

      They will deliberately burn the house down just to be proven right again…

    It’s about Old White People wanting their country back. The gap across generations was very telling. The young people who actually have to compete in present Britain voted to remain. While older (WHITE) folks who are almost on their way out the door, voted to leave.

    Now, we’re seeing stories about people who voted to leave who were like,’ but I didn’t really mean it.’

    “This is a clear reminder of the consequences of Republican obstruction of Obama’s current SCOTUS nominee.”

    The Supreme Court issued a one sentence response today to President Obama’s Deferred Action for Parents of Americans (DAPA): “The judgment is affirmed by an equally divided Court.” That means that, because of a 4-4 tie, the injunction blocking the plan from taking effect stands. As the President pointed out today, it affirms the status quo.

    It is important to keep in mind that Obama’s previous action – Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA – was not contested and therefore continues to be in effect. Also still in place are the priorities this administration outlined for immigration enforcement.

    The above statement from the Court does not indicate a ruling about the Constitutionality of DAPA – that is still an open question to be addressed at a later date.

    As many are noting – including President Obama – this is a clear reminder of the consequences of Republican obstruction of his current SCOTUS nominee, Judge Merrick Garland. With nine Justices, we would have gotten a definitive ruling from the Court. The one thing I haven’t seen mentioned is that if Justice Scalia were still alive, there is no doubt that DAPA would have been struck down. We never had much trouble predicting where he would stand on issues.

    Earlier this month, Donald Trump was asked about the upcoming vote in the U.K. about leaving the European Union. The reporter asked, “And Brexit? Your position?” Trump replied, “Huh?”

    “Brexit,” the reporter repeated. “Hmm,” Trump responded, apparently unfamiliar with the term.

    With this exchange in mind, consider what the presumptive Republican presidential nominee said on Twitter this morning:
    “Just arrived in Scotland. Place is going wild over the vote. They took their country back, just like we will take America back. No games!”
    What Trump may not realize, or really even be able to fully understand, is that Scotland is “going wild” because Scottish voters overwhelmingly voted against leaving the E.U. Locally, people aren’t celebrating – because they see this as a disaster.

    Trump proceeded to hold a press conference in Scotland, against the backdrop of one of the most important political moments in the modern history of the United Kingdom, where he spoke at great length, and in great detail, about his new golf resort. The Republican candidate boasted about refurbished holes on his course, plumbing, putting greens, and zoning considerations.

    On this day June 24th 1968, Resurrection City closed. More than one hundred residents were arrested when they refused to leave site. Other residents, including Ralph Abernathy, were arrested during demonstration at Capitol. National Guard was mobilized later in the day to stop disturbances.

      The issue I have with folks who write books about murderous tragedies and what not, is that they are the only ones who benefit.

      Coordinated propaganda and artificially whipped-up hysteria designed to elicit even more support for ones cause even when thee cause is good and well-meaning, can and will eventually backfire…

      The media and the politicians completely overplayed their hands…And even now in the wake of Brexit, they’re still at it…spinning and scaring away…

      They had a case…just bloody make the case honestly…without distortion and half-truths…and let the people mull over it, and decide…

      The chicken-little hysteria and projections, the faux-moral preachy tone and the attempts at innuendo that suggested that Armageddon might be imminent…only irritated folks all the more…made them feel manipulated and their intelligence insulted – and more importantly, some felt that the supposed ‘greatness’ of their sovereign and what they feel is a quite capable nation on its own, was being insulted and under assault with suggestions that Great Britain needed the EU …and needed to stay in …or else…

      There were other ways of making the case…honesty and treating folks like adults, instead of useful idiots…would have been a good start..

      Sometimes propaganda …no matter how well-intentioned does backfire…and folks instead of being persuaded, are completely turned off…

      This loss could have been headed off…but folks who ought to know better, decided instead to employ the same dishonest hysterics, playbook and propaganda normally more in line with and associated with UKIP – Britain’s version of America’s extreme right-wing folks…some call them ‘Nationalists or populists’…but that’s not what they are…just like the right-wingers here…what motivates them isn’t necessarily love of country…And just like here, you have quite smart, elite Tories aligning with and exploiting them for their own purposes…

      You just can’t outfox folks at their own game…

      And if we are not careful…the blatant coordination between our version of the media, the Clinton campaign, the similarly racist anti-Trump repubs, neocons – and the wealthy puppet-masters who own them and ultimately control the agenda …with their endless, sometimes lop-sided and sometimes over-the-top anti-Trump hysteria being fueled to scare and pummel folks with, will also also backfire..

      I’ve said it before, there is a tendency for some of these politicians – and the media, to overplay their hands…

      Folks are tired of being manipulated and treated like idiots…folks are also tired of everyone not only chiming in, but having very extended and expanded and unrestrained opinions about the politics and democracy of other countries they are not citizens of… something we used to consider rude and inappropriate and overstepping bounds…Time was when even green card holders and permanent resident non-citizens, kept their opinions about American politics to themselves…in much the same way as we did when we lived in the U.K….we didn’t offer opinions about their monarchy or the government of our host country…

      Sure, globalization is a thing now…but we cannot forget that not everybody buys into it, the concept of it…or what it purports to bring to the future…and especially in the ways it seemingly threatens the sovereignty of nations …no matter how promising the economic benefits of it…sometimes this sense of country and pride of country in its rawest and most vernacular sense, trumps economics…

      The seeming threat to sovereignty is something that scares and discomfits not just right-wingers and extremists… or even racists and xenophobes…but even some normally sensible and perfectly smart and educated people…

      They mightn’t share their concerns openly for fear of being judged and shunned..and are often reluctant to admit this even in polls…And then votes happen…and surprises like Brexit is the result..

      Brexit crossed party lines…some Labor and Tory and UKIP members were in this instance aligned in voting yes…

      If the American media and the Clinton campaign aren’t careful not to overplay their hand, we just might wake up with a President trump in January…

      Bet on it..

          I really wish folks would pay attention…

          Nothing about Brexit surprised me…

          I followed it closely since …I listened to David Cameron, Boris Johnson, Nigel Farage (the extreme right-winger)…I listened and I watched and heard the reactions of regular folks…I read their comments online…I read their newspaper editorials which tended to skew however their preferred politicians did…

          There were high-profile and outspoken Labour MP’s who wanted to leave the EU and where for Brexit…

          But the BBC, the Guardian were all pro-Remain and completely drowned out and failed to report …or probably failed to notice that a lot of regular folks weren’t on board…

          This is what happens when our media think they know best and instead of reporting what’s actually happening, try to skew things in favor of their preferred and highly thought of opinion…

          If instead of telling folks to shut up and vote how they in their infinite wisdom had demanded and instructed that they do, the tone-deaf media might actually have noticed – had they paid attention to voices outside their ‘superior’ bubble, that there were such deep expressions of dissatisfaction that included very basic concerns such as lack of financing of local schools etc…something so many felt was as a result of sending inordinate amounts of money to Brussels the EU capital at the expense of these localities..and of course the concern that Britain couldn’t afford to maintain basic services for its citizens outside of London..

    There’s an ongoing debate in the chattering classes about the deepest motives of those who support Donald Trump for president…But now comes the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) and Brookings with a new survey that adds powerful ammunition to the “It’s the Culture, Stupid!” faction…just listing some of their perceptions in a row will give a good sense of how strongly these folks resent cultural change:

    77 percent say it bothers them to come into contact with people who speak little or no English.
    81 percent say discrimination against whites is as big a problem as discrimination against minorities.
    77 percent say discrimination against Christians in the U.S. is a major problem.
    83 percent say the American way of life needs to be protected against foreign influences.
    83 percent say the values of Islam are at odds with America’s values and way of life.
    80 percent say immigrants constitute a burden on American society.
    68 percent say the country has changed mostly for the worse since the 1950s.
