    How to Solve the Crisis in Black Unemployment
    Adding 1.1 million new minority entrepreneurs would add 9 million sorely needed jobs to the U.S. economy.

    The African American unemployment rate has been twice the white unemployment rate since the 1960s. This relationship – which has persisted in good economic times and bad – means that blacks never experience a period of low unemployment, much less a time when they can claim to have full employment. For example, in April, the white unemployment rate was 4.3 percent, but the black rate was 8.8 percent. By further comparison, the white unemployment rate peaked at 9.2 percent in October 2009 in the immediate wake of the Great Recession.

    For about a decade, I have examined many policies to address this disparity, and recently I stumbled upon a surprising one—entrepreneurship.

    My analysis of minority entrepreneurship finds that we need to add 1.1 million more businesses owned by people of color to the economy in order to make the racial composition of American business owners match that of the overall American labor force. But if we can achieve this, these new businesses would add about nine million jobs to the American economy—enough jobs to achieve full employment for all racial groups. These jobs would close the black-white unemployment-rate gap and the gaps for Hispanics and American Indians as well.

    Kansas’ Experiment in Right-Wing Economics Is Still Failing Miserably

    Every few weeks I feel it’s important to return to the ongoing disaster in Sam Brownback’s Kansas. It doesn’t get nearly as much play as it should in the media, which is unfortunate because Kansas’ experience is definitive proof of the failure of supply-side, Laffer-curve-based economic theory.

    Under the leadership of Brownback and one of the most conservative legislatures in America, Kansas dramatically slashed the tax rates of Kansas’ wealthy and its corporations. According to ideology, the cuts should have jumpstarted Kansas’ economy and led to rapid growth that created jobs and helped the tax cuts pay for themselves. Of course, nothing of the sort happened.

    The effect was disastrous, a slow-rolling series of budget shortfalls followed by cuts to essential services like education and roads, which only slowed the economy further. A series of punitive and regressive sin taxes on tobacco and other goods were instituted to make up for the cuts to the tax rates of the wealthy, which of course only further undermined consumer spending.

    Officials in Kansas have tried to blame the problems on a slow national economy, but that is hogwash. Say what you will about the unequal distribution in gains from national economic growth, there is no doubt that the national economy is performing well by traditional metrics. It is not doing so in Kansas. Moreover, Kansas’ neighboring states are doing far better than it is.

      Maybe today is the day we learn the right way to make potato salad? :)

      My mother, who never measured for anything except cakes, basically did this. Peeled and diced boiled russet potatoes, chopped hard boiled eggs, chopped onion, sweet relish, Hellman’s mayo, mustard, salt and pepper to taste, mix it up, lots of paprika on top. Very simple but I always thought it tasted pretty good.

      Okay, who is next? Are these potato salad recipes long held family secrets or what? Can we share?

        I peel and boil a 10 lb bag of potatoes, chop 7 boiled eggs, cup of celery, sweet relish, Kraft miracle whip, pimentos, cup of dill pickles. After potatoes are done mix in your celery while potatoes are hot and mash, the heat cooks the celery and gives it such a delicious flavor then mix in miracle whip, eggs, pickles, relish, pimentos. Sprinkle in pepper to taste, mix and there you have it.

        I made some potato salad for a birthday party last month & people asked who made it, & after they found out it was me they started hugging me. My potato salad is kicking!

        That sounds great, SG2. Thanks for the tip about the celery. The reason I haven’t been using it is because I just don’t want to chomp down on raw celery anymore. I was thinking of taking the celery, onion, and green pepper (from the Soul Food recipe book) and sauteing them ever so slightly. But I’ll try the hot potatoes on the celery as you suggest.

        Now, as we go deeper into the analysis of the potato salad problem, I was thinking that one of the issues may be a failure to get that creamy texture. Your recipe solves that problem. Folks need to understand that 1.) Potatoes must be boiled in water 2.) Potatoes must be cooked just to the point of being mashable 3.) You must mix up the potato salad when the potatoes are hot, just out of the boiling water.

        All of this sounds like common sense but you can bet there are fools out there trying to use microwaved potatoes, etc…

        I have another theory about the potato salad problem and this is so terrible I can barely write it. However, there are “low fat” potato salad recipes out there that call for things like low fat plain yogurt instead of mayo. I have no problem with converting recipes to low fat, but this does not work for potato salad. It destroys the flavor. Folks need to understand that you must use mayo and you must add mustard.

      I’m checking with my soul food cookbook, “Soul Food” by Joyce White. Now, all these recipes are contributed by church ladies. Their potato salad serves 25. I’ll just list the ingredients: white potatoes, celery, green pepper, onions, hard boiled eggs, salt, pepper, pickle relish, drained pimentos, mayo, mustard, paprika, chopped parsley.

    Some Black Men Were In Their Feelings After Jesse Williams Praised Black Women at the BET Awards

    Many likened Williams words to poetry as he eloquently rejected systemic racism, black celebrity consumerism and cultural appropriation. But the line that had many black folks talking was his explicit uplifting of black women.

    But some black men felt a way about Jesse Williams’ unabashed celebration of black womanhood.

    When popular London nightclub DSTRKT refused entry to dark-skinned black women, very few black male entertainers spoke out — despite having performed at or attended the club. Singer Omarion was the only black male American entertainer to boycott the establishment. And last year — in the thick of Black Lives Matter — barely anyone showed up for a NY protest for Rekia Boyd, who was shot in the head and killed by police while standing in a Chicago park.

    Jesse Williams is one of the few and only high profile black men who has used a public platform to praise and ‘rep’ black women. And it was just ONE LINE. It is very disturbing that some men feel that black women do not deserve ONE SENTENCE of affirmation on prime time television.

    UAE tells citizens to avoid national dress while abroad after man held in U.S.

    The United Arab Emirates has urged men to avoid wearing the white robes, headscarf and headband of the national dress when traveling abroad, after a businessman visiting the United States was wrestled to the ground and held as an Islamic State suspect.

    UAE media reported that the Emirati man was detained in Avon, Ohio, last week after a female clerk at a local hotel called 911 to report what she had described as a man affiliated to Islamic State, according to the Arabic-language al-Bayan newspaper. It only identified him by his initials.

    The English language The National said the receptionist at the Fairfield Inn hotel called the police after she heard the man talking on his phone in the hotel lobby.

    Gulf News, another UAE newspaper, published photos of the Emirati man in white robes being wrestled to the ground and handcuffed before being led away by police.
