Monday Open Thread | WH responds to petition to label Black Lives Matter a “terror” group

Fuck all the way out of here with this petition and your bullshit lies. Black people are not going to shut up about being treated unfairly in this country.

We want no less for those not Black who kill us.

Arrest. Trial. Convictions.

Don’t give me the “black on black crime” bullshit either. In the words of Rikyrah…If someone Black is arrested for a crime against another Black person – they will become a guest of the Prison Industrial Complex.

We have a crisis in this country with police killing black people. The Government has a DUTY to protect it’s citizens & it’s not happening. Black people are being slaughtered and there is no justice. Police are killing black people with impunity. It’s state sanction murder.

CBS News: After days of violence and heightened racial tensions in the U.S., the White House responded this week to an online petition asking the federal government to formally label the Black Lives Matter movement as a “terror group.”

“Terrorism is defined as ‘the use of violence and intimidation in pursuit of political aims,'” read the “We The People” petition, created July 6 on the White House website. “This definition is the same definition used to declare ISIS and other groups, as terrorist organizations.”

Black Lives Matter, the petition said, “earned this title due to its actions in Ferguson, Baltimore, and even at a Bernie Sanders rally, as well as all over the United States and Canada.” It asked the Pentagon to recognize the group as such “on the grounds of principle, integrity, morality, and safety.”

Because the online document received at least 100,000 signatures — at the time of this reporting, it had garnered over 141,000 names — the White House was automatically prompted to respond.

The “We the People” team noted that “The White House plays no role in designating domestic terror organizations,” nor does the U.S. government “generate a list of domestic terror organizations.”

“[T]herefore,” the response read, “we are not able to address the formal request of your petition.”

The White House then went further: Acknowledging that it was a “difficult time” for the country — and that the debate remains a “charged” one — the statement additionally prompted petition signers to consider President Obama’s words calling for compassion towards the movement.

“I think it’s important for us to also understand that the phrase ‘black lives matter’ simply refers to the notion that there’s a specific vulnerability for African Americans that needs to be addressed,” the president said last week, talking to a Washington, D.C. gathering of enforcement officials, civil rights leaders, elected officials and other activists on the issue of racial disparities in the criminal justice system. “We shouldn’t get too caught up in this notion that somehow people who are asking for fair treatment are somehow, automatically, anti-police, are trying to only look out for black lives as opposed to others. I think we have to be careful about playing that game.”

And like clockwork, even those who work(ed) for the President…for FLOTUS’s husband…the same rats I’ve been raging against for a while now…

The ones who’ve disrespected the historic black FLOTUS …and have never defended her honor…

White House folks who act as if the President has no wife…that the historic black FLOTUS does not exist…

They are out in force defending Melania Trump’s honor…You can’t make this sh*t up..

I’ve been telling you my fam…some of these White House staff that work or worked for FLOTUS’ husband…these folk ain’t sh*t…and are no better than the repubs…

Here is Tommy Vietor who I’ve mentioned a number of times in my rants…Tommy Vietor worked for the President and then Hillary as SoS…He’s a twitter warrior for Hillary and is and remains great buddies with Reid Cherlin – the other former West Wing staffer who did the hit piece on FLOTUS…

Tell me again how ‘doubtful’ …and how they didn’t mean to plagiarize FLOTUS’ speech..

Melania is about the same age FLOTUS was at the same time in 2008..

I normally try never to feed into the shallow beauty contest arguments…and especially try to never pit women against or over each other – especially not for their looks…

But I am going to go there because I’m mad as hell…

Please tell me how Melania even with all the obvious plastic surgery and reconstruction work she’s had done over the years…please tell me how she’s supposedly better looking than my FLOTUS…

        Please..

This idea that white skin automatically elevates you…that fake boobs bought to get more swim suit department store shoot gigs …and a perpetually immobile face somehow makes you ‘beautiful’ and better, is crazy..

The idea that a 3rd rate ‘model’ without a college degree …who dubiously slept her way into semi notoriety…supposedly ‘speaks 5 languages’…3 of which are actually dialect variations of her primary slovene – Slavs speak Indo-European Slavic languages and share, to varying degrees, cultural traits and historical backgrounds…

And of course her butchered version of the English language…

That this woman is somehow even being compared to the Princeton and Harvard educated historic black FLOTUS – who has done everything right – and even supervised her now President husband when they first met…

Please, enough of these blatant insults…and false narratives and false comparisons that don’t even begin to hold water..

Just because our society has decided that white automatically elevates one, does not in any way mean that we acquiesce…that we play along and allow them to demean us…and diminish the best of us…

      LOL..

Have you ever heard from any of these folks in all the years FLOTUS has been consistently dehumanized…?

    • Melania stole Michelle Obama’s speech! She plagiarized the fuck out of it.

    • eliihass says:

      LOL…

Our God has a sense of humor indeed…and He’s only just getting started..I promise..

By the time this is all over, my God will have my magnificent and historic FLOTUS take her rightful high place…and make ALL her enemies…stealth and not so stealth…her footstool..

And FLOTUS being FLOTUS, will probably still have no use for them folks even as footstools…

They spend all these years obsessively demeaning, disrespecting and trying their darndest to discount and dismiss the brilliant, wise, unpretentious, down to earth, unassuming, what you see is what you get, knows exactly who she is and has no use for affectation – or assuming a fake persona or trying to be an imitation of any (usually fake) other woman…

They try for years to take down my all around amazing and genuinely glorious historic black FLOTUS…but all along as I’ve always told my fam here…they all secretly admire her and are in complete awe of her…they are copying her every genuine move…her genuine interactions…her genuine, heartfelt words …and they steal them all and then try to remake and present it as authentically theirs…

FLOTUS was who started the hugging too …and now everybody is a hugger…and while they always tsked tsked about it, they all now want to be captured not in stiff handshakes, but giving hugs (though still stiff and unnatural – unlike FLOTUS’ signature from the heart, all encompassing, deeply felt hugs)

      LOL..

Isn’t it amusing that in the end, they didn’t go with speeches from any of their previous ‘great white hopes’…

They didn’t study and steal excerpts of any previous First Lady – or auditioning First Lady speeches…Not ‘glamorous’ Nancy Reagan’s, not ‘classy’ Jackie Kennedy’s, not librarian Laura Bush’s, or journalist Lady Bird’s, not ‘superior’ Hillary’s or Ann ‘I love women’ Romney’s …not even Eleanor’s…

They stole from the genuine, from the heart…unaffected, positively impacting and effective historic first black FLOTUS…though they’d prefer to deny this – and her…

But tomorrow – as they are even trying to do tonight – they’ll quickly try to move on…dismiss FLOTUS and try not to give her any credit still…even as they use their dog whistles to continue to demean her …by describing the plagiarizer as having looked ‘beautiful’ while ‘delivering’ the plagiarized speech with ‘class’ …even though the side by side excerpts distinctly shows our gorgeous historic Princeton and Harvard educated FLOTUS speaking beautifully and from the heart, and with real depth and knowledge …and with such presence and power…as opposed to the plastic one blankly and automatedly reciting the plagiarized and long rehearsed speech …

In much the same way that FLOTUS consciously and smartly utilizes fashion as a diplomatic tool and the use of high-low pieces… and generously showcases previously unknown and un-celebrated designers – as opposed to exclusively utilizing one sole high-priced couture house…

And all those who have since studied and copied FLOTUS, like Kate Middleton and others, are talked up and soon are touted as the originators of FLOTUS’ use of fashion for outreach…and to make diplomatic statements…

Some day, this historic FLOTUS will get her due…until then, people like me will keep documenting and making sure folks never overlook facts…and never forget …

      She will be respected…

      She will be given credit…

      She will never be erased..

“…and we’re done watching and waiting while this invention called whiteness uses and abuses us, burying black people out of sight and out of mind while extracting our culture, our dollars, our entertainment like oil – black gold, ghettoizing and demeaning our creations then stealing them, gentrifying our genius and then trying us on like costumes before discarding our bodies like rinds of strange fruit…”

About Kim Kardashian’s Receipts and the Damsel in Distress, Taylor Swift
    Awesomely Luvvie — July 18, 2016

There are few times when I will high five Kim Kardashian for anything she does and this is one of those times. Because I’m petty. Lemme give you the quick rundown of what happened.

Kanye West released his “Famous” single and there’s a line in it that says “I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex / Why? I made that bitch famous / God damn I made that bitch famous.” Taylor Swift, the subject of that portion, has gone on to publicly say it’s offensive (which it is). But the tea of it all is that Kanye ran these lines by her before he even dropped the song. How do we know? Because he tweeted that he did back in February. But that isn’t enough proof so we got some receipts last night.

Kimberly K-West, his wife, went on her SnapChat and dropped video where we hear Kanye and Taylor’s convo over the phone as he went over it with her. Taylor’s response then: “I really appreciate you telling me about it. That’s really nice. It’s all very tongue-in-cheek either way.”

Taylor hopped her ass on Instagram with a paragraph, doe, talmbout “character assassination.” GIRLLLLLLLL. I’m so over Taylor, and this led me to a rant on Twitter last night. It is below. If you can’t see them, view on Storify.

Get to Know Mike Pence and All of the Very Bad Legislation He’s Signed
    Stassa Edwards
    Friday 12:20pm

… Pence is a bit of a darling among anti-choice groups. As a member of Congress, Pence sponsored a 2007 bill to defund Planned Parenthood, the first of its kind, the legislation set off a now nearly decade old congressional battle to defund the organization. Pence reintroduced the legislation multiple times until he left the House in 2011. “Let the abortion providers provide for themselves,” Pence told Politico in 2007. “I’d like to continue to be a persistent, respectful voice for the sanctity of life.”

It was a template and an indicator of how he would treat women’s health as governor of Indiana. As governor, Pence signed virtually every anti-choice bill that was put on his desk, including HB 1337, an omnibus abortion bill that a federal court blocked from taking effect in June of this year.

Pence described the law “a comprehensive pro-life measure that affirms the value of all human life.” In reality, it is a deeply invasive law lacking both empathy and reason (unsurprising, perhaps, from the state that jailed Purvi Patel). HB 1337 bans women from seeking abortions based on race, gender or fetal anomaly; it also mandates that women be required to bury or cremate the fetus post-termination. In addition, it required that abortion doctors have admitting privileges in order to practice, a restriction that the Supreme Court recently struck down in Whole Woman’s Health vs. Hellerstedt…

In 2015, Pence also signed the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA). The controversial law prohibits the passage of state laws that “substantially burden” the religious beliefs of individuals. According to the Associated Press, the definition of an “individual” originally included churches and religious institutions, as well as businesses and other entities (RIP Memories Pizza who played themselves all the way to closing).

The law and its passage were a mess. LGBTQ activists argued that the bill would effectively allow business owners to discriminate and deny customers service if they were LGBTQ (or merely if the owner of the business perceived them to be). After numerous companies and organizations, including Angie’s List and the NCAA, announced that they would boycott the state, the Indiana legislature amended the bill, clarifying that it could not be used to discriminate against LGTBQ people.

Pence handled the passage of the bill poorly. He acknowledged that the bill was discriminatory, yet signed it anyway and, in the process, lost quite a bit of cash for Indiana businesses…

Young Michael Brown was murdered in Missouri…the Democratic Governor of Missouri, Jay Nixon and Democratic St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney, Robert McCulloch – effusively vouched for and defended by the Democratic Senator from Missouri, Claire McCaskill…did everything in their power to not only thwart justice for young Michael Brown and his family, but also treated black protesters with all the racist contempt they could muster…

The idea that our problems lie only with the awful republicans, is a lie..

Hillary Clinton’s concept of super-predators has in a lot of ways aided the perception of black children not as ‘mischievous’ children being children, but as dangerous and hardened criminals who must be destroyed and meted out ‘justice’ deemed too harsh even for war criminals and war enemies on the battle field…

The idea that picketing the rnc convention while ignoring the farce of a ‘trial’ happening in Democratic stronghold Baltimore – under a black judge – is the way to addressing our most immediate and pressing issues, is bizarre..

The new Black Panthers should have been in Baltimore all this time…drawing attention to and speaking out against this sham ‘justice’ process that has only spit in our faces and mocked us and dared us to do our worst..

I can’t say it enough, as ridiculous as Trump is, he is the least of our problems… All you have to do is take a look around… see how some of our fellow Democrats have treated us..and responded to us and our children in times of crisis…they are no better than the republicans…

And as long as we keep throwing them our firewall votes to aid their personal political ambitions, and demanding and receiving nothing ..not even the basic right to exist and live freely in our communities, they will continue to take us for granted…and continue to distract us with supposedly ‘even worse racists’ – who just so happen to have been their best buddies…until of course they started jockeying for the same political office…

And a lot of it has to do with the economic situation that exists in this country,” the retired neurosurgeon told REVOLT TV in a video posted to its Twitter account.

Does Trump Have a Ceiling at 42%?
    by David Atkins
    July 17, 2016 2:53 PM

A slew of new national polls are out today showing Clinton with a modest but substantial lead over Donald Trump going into the conventions. It’s important, of course, not to put too much emphasis on national polling right now even in the aggregate. But the new numbers do make an interesting suggestion about the state of the race.

It’s obvious that Clinton has an advantage somewhere in the mid-single digits. We also know that regardless of the national numbers, Trump faces a steep uphill climb in the electoral college. But the upper bound number that demands attention in the latest three polls.

First is the ABC/Washington Post poll showing Clinton ahead of Trump by four: 47% to 43%

Second is the CNN/ORC poll giving Clinton a 7-point edge: 49% to 42%.

Third is the NBC/WSJ poll with Clinton beating Trump by 5: 46% to 41%.

On election day one of the candidates will reach 50% barring an unusually high number of third party votes. Both candidates will see their numbers rise as disaffected and undecided voters come home.

Why Journalists Should Be Concerned About the Trump/Pence Ticket
    by Nancy LeTourneau
    July 18, 2016 11:51 AM

David Mindich is seeing a “Murrow moment” for journalists with the Trump candidacy.

As Edward R. Murrow wrapped up his now-famous special report condemning Joseph McCarthy in 1954, he looked into the camera and said words that could apply today. “He didn’t create this situation of fear—he merely exploited it, and rather successfully,” Murrow said of McCarthy. Most of Murrow’s argument relied on McCarthy’s own words, but in the end Murrow shed his journalistic detachment to offer a prescription: “This is no time for men who oppose Senator McCarthy’s methods to keep silent—or for those who approve,” he said. “We cannot defend freedom abroad by deserting it at home.”

After months of holding back, modern-day journalists are acting a lot like Murrow, pushing explicitly against Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.

    ………………….

Trump began his attempts to silence the media by throwing Jorge Ramos out of a news conference for asking a question he didn’t like. That eventually turned into a blacklist of media outlets that were banned from his events. The list eventually grew to include Univision, Buzzfeed, Politico, The Daily Beast, Huffington Post, The Des Moines Register and the Washington Post.

Perhaps even more disturbing is Trump’s proposal to loosen libel laws in order to make it easier for him to sue media outlets for reporting he doesn’t like. Callum Borchers explains how that could happen.

  26. Judge Barry Williams is the most disgusting black ass stepinfetchit bootlicking white supremacy helping POS I have ever seen in my life.

My thoughts exactly, but a bit more colorful.

If we pursued this, we would probably be able to find out how Barry Williams became Judge Barry Williams and I suspect it wasn’t by being a champion of civil rights.

The darkest hour is just before dawn, they say. Is this the darkest hour yet?

      • I am so disgusted with this country and white supremacy. Things will get worse but can we bear it? Or do we leave? Black people are not safe here and the government is not protecting us.

      • Liza says:

Well, there are close to 40 million black people living in the US. Black Lives Matter and other activists have certainly raised nationwide awareness of this injustice. Their effectiveness is evident in the push back of those who prefer white supremacy. This is nothing new which is not to say that it isn’t agonizing because it is.

Crisis intervention must occur at the federal level. I’m convinced of that, I always have been. But I’m sitting here thinking, how bad does it have to get before that becomes the general consensus? Before enough people actually believe it and demand that our highest authorities act in the best interest of the people they supposedly serve?

In the interim, on the bad days, you just have to hold on, SG2. You have a major stake in this country. You were born here, your children and grandchildren were born here, you have been a good citizen and more all of your life. This is your country.

Yeah, that was painfully obvious when the first bench trial ended in acquittal. Someone should ask Judge Barry how he sleeps at night. Speaking for myself, I couldn’t live with those demons. I would be haunted by young black men with broken necks and severed spines being shoved by cop gangs into police vans and left to die. How do you know that happened and live with yourself? What does he get for this? A nice house in the suburbs? Pseudo-respect from his “peers”?

From Tony Schwartz, the man who actually wrote “The Art of the Deal,” Donald Trump’s 1987 bestseller. Schwartz is sorry about that. An excerpt from The New Yorker piece:

“I put lipstick on a pig,” he said. “I feel a deep sense of remorse that I contributed to presenting Trump in a way that brought him wider attention and made him more appealing than he is.” He went on, “I genuinely believe that if Trump wins and gets the nuclear codes there is an excellent possibility it will lead to the end of civilization.”

If he were writing “The Art of the Deal” today, Schwartz said, it would be a very different book with a very different title. Asked what he would call it, he answered, “The Sociopath.”

The One Poll Number that Spells Doom for Trump and the GOP
    by David Atkins
    July 18, 2016 2:58 AM

I wrote earlier today about Trump’s apparent 42% ceiling in public polling, which is a bad sign for him. But it’s Trump’s numbers among Hispanics that spell doom not only for him, but also the future of the Republican Party:

Donald Trump remains overwhelmingly unpopular with Latinos, a new NBC News/ Wall Street Journal/Telemundo poll shows, with only about one in seven Latino voters say they support the presumptive GOP nominee.

A whopping 76 percent of the 300 Latino registered voters in the poll said they back Hillary Clinton in a head-to-head race, while just 14 percent said they back Trump.

What’s more, 82 percent of Latino voters say they have an unfavorable view of Trump, while just 11 percent view him positively.

Keep in mind that in order to win the presidency, Trump will likely need at least 30% of the Hispanic vote–and maybe even closer to 40%. It’s Trump’s bet that he can maximize the white vote and reduce his need for minority voters, but the problem is that Trump trails among white college-educated voters and that is not likely to change. His direct appeals to racism, his rejection of basic science on issues like vaccines and climate change, and his anti-elitist common-man shtick make him an anathema to educated people of all races. There’s a cap on how many white votes Trump can win.

  30. The judge was assigned to these cases to let them all off. The whole thing was a farce. Trayvon Martin case all over. Gross injustice!

This is ANOTHER horrific travesty of justice.

Not seeing any light at the end of the tunnel right now.

Right now, Trump is one of the most central figures in this country who has peddled and stirred up racial animus, dangerously, I must add. And he’s in Cleveland as a presidential nominee for our country.

So if anyone is to blame for any so-called anti-cop sentiment, it’s TRUMP, who professes to support the very arm of law enforcement that some harbor the same exact sentiments of bigotry and hate as he does, and are Senselessly murdered black people.

What universe are we living in folks.

    • Liza says:

I watched cable news for about three minutes this AM. Well, they were talking about the convention, of course, and the theme today is “Make America Safe Again.”

Trump, of course, intends to capitalize on recent events, get his followers all stirred up, and God knows what else.

There’s a bad moon on the rise.

  33. Baton Rouge Attack Deepens Anguish for Police: ‘We’ve Seen Nothing Like This’

    http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/breakingnews/baton-rouge-attack-deepens-anguish-for-police-%e2%80%98we%e2%80%99ve-seen-nothing-like-this%e2%80%99/ar-BBurjYk?li=BBnb7Kz&ocid=U348DHP

“Officer down!” an officer screamed frantically into his police radio Sunday morning in Baton Rouge, La. “Shots fired! Officer down!”

One of the most dreaded calls in policing triggered a surge of officers to the city’s Airline Highway, not far from Police Headquarters, an agonizing replay of the distress calls 10 days earlier that prompted the Dallas police to scramble to the aid of their fallen colleagues.

The twin attacks — three officers dead Sunday in Baton Rouge, five killed on July 7 in Dallas, along with at least 12 injured over all — have set off a period of fear, anguish and confusion among the nation’s 900,000 state and local law enforcement officers. Even the most hardened veterans call this one of the most charged moments of policing they have experienced.

Officers from Seattle to New Orleans are pairing up in squad cars for added safety and keeping their eyes open for snipers while walking posts. It is an anxious time: Officers must handle not only vocal denunciations from peaceful protesters who criticize abusive policing, but also physical attacks by a tiny few on the periphery.

Law enforcement officials said it had been generations since the nation endured two separate episodes in which so many police officers were killed.

“We’ve seen nothing like this at all,” said Darrel W. Stephens, the executive director of the Major Cities Chiefs Association and an instructor at the Public Safety Leadership Program at Johns Hopkins University. “The average officer in America, who was tense anyway, their tension and vigilance is going to increase even more. Police officers have always been vulnerable, and they know it. But somewhere inside you, you didn’t think it would happen. But now we’re seeing it happen.”
