There’s a draft of Trump’s speech making the rounds, and according to both Chris Hayes and Ross Douthat it’s something of a straight reboot of Pat Buchanan’s infamous “cultural war” speech from the 1992 convention:

If the draft I’m seeing is right, the speech is basically Buchananism without religion.
A couple of thoughts:
I’m actually surprised by this. What I expected was for at least Trump’s script to be somewhat toned down, so that whoever is currently playing David Broder in this bad political novel we’re now living in could burble about DJT’s new mature and statesman-like approach, his timely pivot toward the center, and so forth. Whether he would stick to that script during the speech would be another matter, as Trump obviously has trouble doing so — he gets bored very easily, he wants nothing less than pure adulation from his most rabid admirers, he loves to ad-lib etc.
But apparently even the prepared script is pretty hair-raising. If that’s correct, it would be irresponsible not to speculate regarding what’s really going on. I’m just throwing this out there: Could Trump be trying to extort the GOP powers that be to get him quit the race for the right price? If he gives a speech that makes it perfectly obvious that he’s not going to even try to pursue an electoral strategy that will be anything less than a full-on disaster, could this be interpreted as a kind of opening bid?
The reason I don’t think this is impossible is that I think there’s a non-trivial chance that Trump doesn’t even really want to be POTUS when you get right down to it (It is a real job after all, which requires sitting in meetings all day and other things he has no patience for).
Of course there are lots of alternative explanations, such as that Trump is stupid and vain enough to think that what works with the most unhinged elements of the GOP base will work well in the general. Or maybe it’s all a bait and switch and the “real” speech will be all semi-moderate and stuff, after he has caused a panic with a fake leaked document. Really anything is possible with this guy, so who knows? But everybody will be watching, which at bottom is no doubt ultimately what this has always been about.

God seems to be toying with American conservatives. On the same day Donald Trump secured the Republican nomination, Roger Ailes, legendary creator of Fox News, was being ushered out of his role.
Mr Trump’s rise may have taken the world by surprise but it is hard to imagine his message having taken root without Mr Ailes’ groundwork.
Felled by sexual harassment allegations from a former Fox anchor, the news channel’s departing creator is no household name. Yet Mr Ailes has played wizard behind the curtain to more than two generations of Republican presidential candidates, conservative pundits and intellectuals. He is the creator and destroyer of ambitions — the Shiva of US conservatism. Without Mr Ailes, Rupert Murdoch would have been a far less potent figure on the US scene.
In fact God’s theatrical timing is even odder than it seems. Mr Trump’s convention theme draws explicitly from Richard Nixon’s successful 1968 law and order presidential campaign, which was shaped by a young Mr Ailes. That was the election that launched the then 27-year-old on to the national scene. Mr Ailes cornered Mr Nixon and said: “The camera doesn’t like you,” in reference to his notorious 1960 televised debate performance with John Kennedy. “It’s a shame you have to use gimmicks like television to get elected,” Nixon replied. “Television is not a gimmick,” Ailes replied. “And if you think it is, you’ll lose again.” Mr Ailes’ role was chronicled in the classic book The Selling of the President. From then on, he was an acknowledged master of that medium.

Florida Police Shoot Unarmed Black Therapist Helping Autistic Man

Another shocking video of police shooting an African-American man has emerged. It happened Monday in North Miami, Florida. Police shot the unarmed man in the leg as he was attempting to help an autistic man who had wandered away from a group home. Social worker Charles Kinsey is seen lying on the ground with his hands in the air when police shot him. Police have said they were responding to a 911 call about a man with a gun. But in a cellphone video released yesterday, Kinsey can be heard telling police “All he has is a toy truck. A toy truck. I am a behavioral therapist at a group home.”

Kinsey can also be heard on the video trying to calm down the autistic man, and said he was more worried about his patient’s safety than his own. The video does not show the moment the shots are fired, and Kinsey said officers offered no explanation.
Charles Kinsey: “When he hit me, I’m like—I still got my hands in the air. I said, ‘You know, I just got shot.’ And I’m standing there. I’m like, ‘Sir, why did you shoot me?’ And his words to me, he said, ‘I don’t know.’ … And I’m face down on the ground with cuffs on, waiting on the rescue squad to come. I’d say about 20—about 20 minutes for the rescue squad to get there. And I was bleeding. Yes, bleeding.”
Reuters reported that the North Miami Police Department has placed an officer on leave after the incident and that the Miami-Dade County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the shooting.

For years, Republicans have been fairly consistent in their criticisms of President Obama’s foreign policy. Former Gov. Jeb Bush (R-Fla.), for example, insisted last year that the president “does not believe that American power is a force for good.” Senate Homeland Security Committee Chairman Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) used nearly identical language a year earlier.
Reality, of course, points in the opposite direction, and President Obama has proven repeatedly that the Republican attacks are the opposite of the truth.
But in 2016, there is a presidential hopeful who genuinely believes that the United States lacks moral authority on the international stage. After years of inexplicable anti-Obama whining, ironically, it’s the Republican nominee.
Donald J. Trump, on the eve of accepting the Republican nomination for president, said Wednesday that if he were elected, he would not pressure Turkey or other authoritarian allies about conducting purges of their political adversaries or cracking down on civil liberties. The United States, he said, has to “fix our own mess” before trying to alter the behavior of other nations.
“I don’t think we have a right to lecture,” Mr. Trump said in a wide-ranging interview in his suite in a downtown hotel here while keeping an eye on television broadcasts from the Republican National Convention.
When the New York Times asked if he’d honor the NATO treaty, and defend allied nations if attacked, Trump balked – saying he’d check first to see if he’s satisfied with their contributions to the alliance.

It’s not as if we haven’t seen bad nominating conventions before. During the 1968 Democratic convention, there were literal riots outside the hall. At the 1972 Democratic convention, the presidential nominee chose a running mate, then felt the need to swap him out for someone else.
As the 1992 Republican convention, the American mainstream recoiled when Pat Buchanan declared a religious war. Twenty years later, Clint Eastwood got into an argument with an empty chair – and somehow managed to come out on the losing end of the quarrel.
And yet, reading the New York Times’ David Leonhardt’s summary of the 2016 Republican gathering, it’s hard not to marvel at this week’s developments in Cleveland.
Screaming matches between delegates. Past nominees who refused to attend. Speakers who seem allergic to mentioning the nominee’s name – or policies. The runner-up refusing to endorse the winner.
Plagiarism. Lies about plagiarism. Talk of Lucifer from the stage. Humanizing stories about the nominee relegated to obscure time slots. Multiple speakers calling for the jailing of the opposing nominee. A prominent delegate calling for that nominee’s execution by firing squad.
Well, sure, when you put it that way, it sounds like things haven’t gone well.

This morning Martin Longman made what I think is the first correct interpretation of what happened with Ted Cruz last night. Yes, the Trump campaign had Ted Cruz’s speech in advance. I am sure that they read it. They almost certainly discussed it with Cruz. So how could such a disaster happen with their eyes open?
The answer is that it all happened just like Trump wanted. In wrestling terms Trump lured Cruz on stage and surprised him with a heel turn.

Consider a few things.
* First, never forget that Trump came to reality TV by way of pro wrestling. He may not be able to business his way out of a paper bag but Trump showed up on the WWE circuit like he was born to be there. He showed a natural talent for syntax of the business, a mix of aggressive bullshit and classic show biz. Nobody had to show Trump how to wrap a room of screaming morons (yes I know, #notallprowrestlingfans) around his stubby fingers. That part came natural. I think I could make the case that a frothing WWE crowd has a lot in common with Republican base voters who constitute his faithful core. I hope I do not need point out that pro wrestling informs just about everything he does in this race. That time he crashed Glenn Beck’s anti-Trump Cruz event? WWE in a nutshell.
* Trump never lets go of a grudge. This one neurosis overrides basically every other consideration Trump ever has, about anything. The man has a fruit fly attention for anything except who bows to Trump and who doesn’t.
I’m waiting on that open letter to black victims of police violence. But I might be waiting throughout eternity because no one gives a fuck about us.
