    Constance Wu Just Shut Down Any Arguments for Casting Matt Damon in ‘The Great Wall’

    After the trailer dropped for Matt Damon’s latest film The Great Wall, a fantasy-action film about the Great Wall of China, on Thursday, several people were left scratching their head as to why Damon was cast as the lead actor in a film about a Chinese landmark.

    Count Fresh Off the Boat actress Constance Wu as one of the head scratchers. On Friday afternoon, she tweeted a long explanation as to why, in the age of #OscarsSoWhite, Damon is front and center in a film about Asian history.

    “We have to stop perpetuating the racist myth that [only a] white man can save the world,” Wu wrote on Twitter. “Our heroes don’t look like Matt Damon. They look like Malala. Gandhi. Mandela. Your big sister when she stood up for you to those bullies that one time.”

    APPARENTLY DASHIKIS ARE POPULAR IN (LOCAL) DC NOW

    When I got to Morehouse College in 1997, there were two groups of people on the yard whose geograhic residence was pretty easy to point out: Atlanta and Washington, DC. Atlanta was easy for me for obvious reasons, to the point where it was even fairly easy to distinguish between an East side dude and a West side dude. But DC, those cats were on a whole other plane. DC had some of the most distinctive fashion styles I’d ever seen. Everybody from DC seemed to go out of their way to be as DC as possible, from the cut up t-shirts and bedazzled headbands and HOBO, Madness, and ddtp tshirts. Not to mention the drop socks, love affair for foamposite sneakers and affinity for New Balance, Warner Bros, branded race car jackets, Harley Davidson, and oddly enough, cowboy boots. From 1997-2001, it was almost impossible to NOT be able to tell the people, guys and gals, from DC.

    I left. Never will I return there with my daughter in tow. Well, while I was running through the mall and using my hands as earmuffs, I noticed something. Quite a few kids we wearing dashikis. I thought maybe there was some type of afro-centric something or other going on. But then I started paying attention, every single hood clothing store had a mannequin or a rack outfront with dashkikis. And dope ones too. Various colors to choose from, some even had hoods on them. I walked into one store (and then quickly walked back out, kids and shit) to check the prices, and they were on sale for $19.99. Interesting.
    I wanted a hooded dashiki by the way, but because I was afraid I’d ruin my child, I figured I’d make that trip to Iverson Mall (nearer to me) to make that purchase because if they had them at PG Plaza, I knew Iverson Mall would.
    IMG_5777And I was not disappointed. As soon as I made my way to Iverson Mall, sans child, I noticed a few kids rocking dashikis. I found mine, rolled out, and was happy. As I went to the grocery store near my house, I noticed SEVERAL younger kids and teenagers also wearing dashikis. Apparently, they’re the hot shit right now in DC.

    JPMorgan Pays Inmates for Fees on Get-Out-of-Jail Debit Card

    JPMorgan Chase & Co.’s contract to provide debit cards to inmates released from federal prison may have backfired after a former convict raised a ruckus.

    The bank agreed to pay a total of $446,822 to thousands of ex-prisoners to settle a class-action suit claiming JPMorgan ripped them off with $10 fees to withdraw money from a teller window and $2 charges for using non-network ATMs, according to a filing on Monday in federal court in Philadelphia.

    JPMorgan’s contract with the Federal Bureau of Prisons was a scheme “to exploit one of the most vulnerable groups imaginable — releasees from federal corrections facilities,” according to the complaint. “Every cent counts for federal releasees who are coming out of prison without an immediate means of income.”

    Governor fumes after North Carolina’s attorney general refuses to defend state’s racist voter ID law

    North Carolina’s attorney general won’t represent the state in appealing last week’s court ruling that overturned a voter ID mandate and other voting restrictions.

    Attorney General Roy Cooper said Tuesday the state had tried its best to defend against the lawsuit but lost. Outside counsel for the governor and legislative leaders who are already involved in the case can handle any appeals, Cooper said, although he pointed out that would cost additional money and confuse voters.

    Gov. Pat McCrory quickly called a news conference to denounce Cooper, the Democrat who is challenging him in the November election, for refusing to defend the state against this and other politically charged lawsuits. Both candidates went on the attack as their campaigns picked up steam approaching the final three months before Election Day.

    “We’re very disappointed to hear that again his office is not willing to do his job,” McCrory said. “In fact, I question whether he should even accept a paycheck from the state of North Carolina any more because he continues to not do his job, as his oath of office requires him to do.”

    Cooper spoke to reporters earlier Tuesday and said there was a broader theme.

    “The courts keep striking down these laws passed by the legislature and signed by the governor,” Cooper said. “When are they going to learn that you just can’t run roughshod over the Constitution? That you have to pass laws that are within the framework of the state and federal constitutions? We need to start doing that in North Carolina.”

    It’s amazing when the cops can legit stop themselves from killing a man who tried to kill a baby, but when u black or brown they try to kill u and your babies.

    President Obama absolutely blistered Donald Trump today, and the interesting thing about what he said is that there’s really nothing debatable about any of it. The Republicans absolutely know that Obama is correct, down to the smallest detail.

    “I think what’s been interesting is the repeated denunciations of his statements by leading Republicans,” he said in a press conference. “The question I think they have to ask themselves is, if you are repeatedly having to say in very strong terms that what he has said is unacceptable, why are you still endorsing him? What does this say about your party that this is your standard-bearer? This isn’t a situation where you have an episodic gaffe. This is daily and weekly where they are distancing themselves from statements he’s making.”

    Obama wondered what comment from Trump would actually force Republicans to withdraw their support for the Republican nominee.

    “There has to be a point in which you say this is not somebody I can support for President of the United States, even if he purports to be a member of my party. The fact that that has not yet happened makes some of these denunciations ring hollow. I don’t doubt their sincerity. I don’t doubt they were outraged about some of the statements that Mr. Trump and his supporters made about the Khan family,” he said. “But there has to come a point in which you say somebody who makes those kinds of statements doesn’t have the judgment, the temperament, the understanding to occupy the most powerful position in the world because a lot of people depend on the White House getting stuff right.”

    He noted that the denunciations coming from Republicans differ from the typical policy disagreements between Democrats and Republicans.

      I wonder how long it is going to take before the truth is out on this. I hope the child is going to be okay, as in not physically disabled. He will likely suffer from PTSD, however.

    Trump’s outrageous insult to Khizr Khan, the father of a deceased veteran, falls into the same category. A normal person would be sympathetic to the Khans’ loss and appreciative of their service to the country, even if they disagreed with them politically. A humbler politician would have thanked the Khans and their son for their service to the country, then explained why his own policies would in theory benefit the country their son died to protect. A less narcissistic person would have had the moral courage to admit that he had not made personal sacrifices on the level of the Khans, but that he had spent his life trying to make the world a better place and would continue to do so as President.

    But not Donald Trump. Donald Trump doesn’t have the courage to be humble, nor does he have the life resume to even make a humble response possible. Because whatever Donald Trump has done with his life, it isn’t to make the world a better place. Even Karl Rove and Frank Luntz could reasonably claim to have spent their lives in the service of philosophical ideals and a vision of the world they believe in. But not Donald Trump. He lives only for himself.

    That ethic can pass muster and win the day among the small sliver of Republican voters steeped in a venomous stew of prosperity gospel theology, objectivist philosophy and eliminationist politics. But it cannot work in a general election where voters expect more than raw greed and bigoted anger. To expand beyond his comfort zone would take a courage and openness to personal growth that Donald Trump lacks.

    That is why, for all his bravado, Trump is already complaining about his debate schedule with Hillary Clinton–a move that, as we saw in the Republican primary, is a Trump first step to potentially dodging debates altogether. Trump knows that he won’t be able to hold his own against Clinton in front of a national audience, and he’s already laying the groundwork to duck out of one or more of them.

    They are police officers, which means that they both make, at least $60k/year. I’m being on the low side. I know that DC is expensive, but still. They couldn’t put their kids in the schools where they live?

    This isn’t like the other cases of poor parents lying to get their kids in a better system.

    A pair of District of Columbia police officers are on the hook for a $539,000 judgment for fraudulently enrolling their children in the city’s public schools for a decade.

    The married couple lived in various locations across Maryland and Virginia while their children attended D.C. schools between 2003 and 2013, according to a press release from the District of Columbia Office of the Attorney General.

    During that time, the husband used the address of a rental property he owned in Washington to enroll the couple’s children in some of the city’s most coveted public schools. Under D.C. law, nonresidents who attend city schools must pay tuition ranging from $7,000 to $10,000 annually for each child.

    “D.C. taxpayers should not be subsidizing the education of children from other states,” District of Columbia Attorney General Karl Racine said in a statement announcing the judgment. “We will continue to investigate and prosecute those who falsely claim District residency in order to obtain government benefits to which they are not entitled.”
