    Ghosts of White People Past: Witnessing White Flight From an Asian Ethnoburb
    If diversity is so important to liberal whites, why do they keep fleeing ethnically diverse suburbia?

    For the first time in my life, I am not a racial minority when I move to Johns Creek, Georgia. People from myriad cultures, ethnicities, religions, and nationalities deem this patch of earth home. Persian and Indian markets bookend strip malls. Japanese, Vietnamese, Thai, Indonesian, Korean, and Chinese restaurants perch on the corners of major intersections.
    One blustery winter morning, I tour a preschool for my then-youngest child. The director, a petite woman with light brown hair, greets me warmly in the foyer, hands me a pamphlet describing the classes, the curriculum, the school’s philosophy. At the end of the tour, she asks if I have any questions. I shake my head, thank her for her time, and open the glass door to the parking lot when she calls out in a cautionary tone: “This area has changed quite a bit in the past few years. It’s really, really different.”
    I’ve heavily researched this suburban dream of a town, analyzed pertinent school and safety statistics. Her hesitation doesn’t reflect the fruits of my labor.
    “How so?” I ask.

    Her lips disappear into a thin line. “It’s just, you know, changed.”
    Over the next nine years, I have front row seats to a white exodus from Johns Creek, a suburb located 25 miles outside of Atlanta. The majority of these white families do not relocate closer to Atlanta or to jobs elsewhere in the metro area. They move across a newly expanded four-lane road to the adjacent northern county, Forsyth, a stone’s throw from their former domiciles.
    I ask our neighbors, point blank, why they are moving.
    Nora’s good at math. There are too many kids here good at math. They’re affecting her self-esteem.
    Asian parents take their kids for extra tutoring. It’s not fair for the “regular” kids.

    Bougie Movie Review: Southside with You
    August 27, 2016 in movies

    After having our male movie-watching partners roll their eyes at us, one of my galpals from way, way back in the day and I headed out to see Southside with You. Armed with diet soda and a small buttery popcorn, we dashed into a mostly empty matinee showing of the 90-minute film.

    First of all, it’s beuatifully shot. I’ve been to Chicago many a time and have more than a passing fondness for it (except in winter) but this film made me want to go back and spend some time.

    Parker Sawyer is uncanny as a young, slightly cocky, coming-into-his-own Barack Obama. He has the cadence, the mannerisms and je-ne-sais-quoi that we’ve come to associate with our 44th president. Tika Sumpter plays Michelle as attracted-in-spite-of-herself, struggling with the reality of what corporate/legal life is like vs. what she wants to make of herself. A few minutes in, you forget you are watching actors play a role and instead feel you are getting a peek into something personal and special.

    How GOP austerity helped create Trump

    The conservative media can’t stop complaining that we’re in the midst of the worst recovery since World War II — despite the fact that it’s likely that more private sector jobs will be created in President Obama’s second term than have ever been created in four years under any Republican.

    But conservatives aren’t complaining, they’re bragging.

    A little-noticed report from the Economic Policy Institute earlier this month should have been national news, but was drowned out the sturm und drang of the campaigns and low-grade trauma generated by Donald Trump’s constant toxic mix of abuse and gaslighting.

    Here’s the conclusion EPI came up with as it examined the role government investment has played in the last four recoveries:

    The recovery since 2009 has been historically slow, and the disappointing pace can be explained entirely by the fiscal austerity imposed by Republicans in Congress.

    One thing that guests on Joy Reid‘s new weekend program AM Joy are learning is that Joy Reid does not play. Although she’s probably among the most genial hosts on cable TV, one regular feature of the show is Reid firmly calling out guests who argue in bad faith or persistently evade, or as it happened Saturday morning, try and sneak through a turd or two.

    While discussing Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump‘s popularity with the racist “alt-right,” pro-Trump guest Alfonso Aguilar tried to make an insinuation about Planned Parenthood, and like Gandalf standing on some cable news bridge of stone, Reid made it clear that he Shall. Not. Pass.

    It is also my understanding that players are also encouraged to be apolitical, at least publicly. And that isn’t hard to believe, given how seldom they make political statements.

      Look, the star spangled banner was written after the war of 1812 was won by the US. Find out how slaves were treated in that war. The British freed hundreds if not thousands of slaves from the US during that war and that really pissed the US off.
      So please…..take several seats white people cuz that song was never meant for us. As a matter of fact the US was so mad over the taking of their property during the war that they asked Britain for monetary reparations for the slaves they took and freed. Again, a lil history might not hurt. Maybe they should all go back to Europe where they came from

    About 40 seconds elapsed before Muskogee, Okla., police pepper sprayed 84-year-old Geneva Smith.

    Muskogee, Okla. police are investigating a pepper-spray incident involving an 84-year-old woman in her home.

    Fox 23 reports that officers were looking for Geneva Smith’s son last week when it occurred. He ran into his home where police used a Taser on him.

    Smith then came out to see what was going on and one of about four to six officers asked her to turn around. The video shows that about 40 seconds elapsed before they sprayed Smith in the face after which she immediately went down.

    NewsOn6 reports that family members said Smith had to go to the hospital. They’re demanding an apology from the police department.

    Social media fires back at Trump for tweet about Dwyane Wade’s cousin

    Donald Trump is facing heavy criticism on social media for his response to reports that NBA star Dwyane Wade’s cousin was fatally shot in Chicago on Friday.

    “Dwayne Wade’s cousin was just shot and killed walking her baby in Chicago. Just what I have been saying. African-Americans will VOTE TRUMP!,” he tweeted on Saturday morning.

    The tweet is in line with Trump’s recent minority outreach attempts. He has specifically included rhetoric in his rally speeches that he hopes will appeal to black voters, including asking them “what do you have to lose” by voting for Trump.
    “Look at how badly things are going under decades of Democratic leadership — look at the schools, look at the 58 percent of young African-Americans not working,” Trump said to black voters at a rally in North Carolina last week.

    But many have pointed to Trump’s tweet as tone deaf and opportunistic in light of the tragic death, and criticized him for misspelling Dwyane Wade’s name in the tweet.

      This dovetails into what I was saying about the “alt-right.” Is there really a way to speak to degrees of white supremacy? If we allow that, they continue to live in denial, and in some cases become elected officials much as they always have.
