Florida Gov. Rick Scott on Thursday rebuffed a request by Hillary Clinton’s campaign to extend the state’s voter registration deadline beyond Oct. 11 on account of Hurricane Matthew. “People have had time to register,” Scott said.

      This hurricane is NO JOKE.

        So scary.

My prayers are for those in its path, that they be safe.

      • Liza says:

One of my sisters lives in Palm Coast which is between St. Augustine and Daytona Beach. Her house is right on the Inter Coastal Waterway, and there is a very narrow strip of land between that and the ocean. I can’t even imagine what it’s going to be like after the storm passes. Most of my family members that still live in Florida are in west Jacksonville, probably about 20 miles inland, but they are expecting the St. John’s River to flood as well.

This is like nothing those folks have ever seen. It’s usually the southernmost part of Florida and the Gulf side that gets hammered and the storms are not Cat-4s. I’m really worried about the property damage, homes being uninhabitable for weeks or months, or people totally losing their homes.

All we can do now is pray for those folks as well as those outside the US that have it much worse.

      • Liza says:

And I’m hoping no one dies.

      • Liza says:

Outside the US, the death toll in Haiti is up to 136.

      • yahtzeebutterfly says:

Oh, my Liza. I will say prayers for your family that they and their property get through the storm safely.

I hope that the coastal inhabitants have all evacuated.

      • Liza says:

TY, Yahtzee. I’ve been watching the Weather Channel off and on. The central Atlantic coast is going to get the worst of it, to be sure.

The death toll in Haiti is up to 264.

      • Ametia says:

Liza, my thoughts and prayers to you and your family. Its got to be unnerving,

      • Liza says:

TY, Ametia. This is such an unusual storm the way it is moving up the coast, keeping it’s intensity. I feel so bad for my home state. I guess we’ll know the level of devastation after the weekend, but there’s nothing more for them to do right now except stay alive.

    • rikyrah says:

Please be safe. If they tell you to go… GO

The World Mourns Loss of Gloria Naylor
Gloria Naylor, National Book Award Winner, Dies at 66

Gloria Naylor, whose debut novel, “The Women of Brewster Place,” won a National Book Award and was adapted into an acclaimed mini-series that starred and was produced by Oprah Winfrey, died on Wednesday near her home in Christiansted, V.I. She was 66.

The cause was heart failure, her niece, Cheryl Rance, said.

Ms. Naylor’s novels addressed social issues including poverty, racism, sexism and gay rights, usually through intricately drawn black female characters.

“The Women of Brewster Place” (1982) presented seven interlocking narratives, each centered on a different woman living in a decrepit housing project. The women struggle together against an indifferent and hostile world, surviving in the face of rape, homophobia and a child’s death.

I really enjoyed Black-ish last night. Dre was lamenting the end of Obama Presidency, and he was all in his feelings…

    I understand Dre.
