ray-tensing-juryCINCINNATI — After learning that the jury in Ray Tensing’s murder trial was not close to a verdict Wednesday, Judge Megan Shanahan sequestered them overnight. Deliberations resumed at Thursday around 8:45 a.m., and a verdict could very well follow.

The jury deliberated about four hours Wednesday. It got the case just before noon following closing arguments.

Shanahan had ordered jurors to bring an overnight bag to the courthouse Wednesday morning just in case.

Remembering the riots that followed a police shooting here in 2001 and more recent instances in other cities, officials have opened the Cincinnati-Hamilton County Regional Emergency Operations Center, signaling the city is preparing for whatever follows the verdict. It is typically used for emergencies and natural disasters.

There have been small, peaceful demonstrations outside the courthouse each day since jury selection began two weeks ago. They usually involved fewer than a dozen people.

      And now, of course, there is a zero probability for at least the next four years that the Department of Justice is going to prosecute cops.

        To me it is not meaningless that he was wearing a confederate flag shirt. He would have had to have heard all of the uproar after Dylan Roof displaying the confederate flag with his gun and all of the other hate symbols. Tensing would have had to have heard about Bree Newsome and her removal of the flag from its pole and all the the states that have been removing the confederate flags. Tensing would have know how offensive and racist the Black community considers that flag.

        Tensing might have even known about the KKK meeting at Norris Dam in the Smoky Mountains in 2014 which Storefront and the group labeled “The Smoky Mountain Summit:

        Advertised for months on the racist Website, Stormfront, it remains unclear if anyone in Tennessee state government knew about the nature of the event, although it should have been obvious to Norris Dam State Park officials that this was no ordinary “family reunion.”

        The summit was organized and attended by some of America’s most notorious professional racists, including David Duke, Thomas Robb and Stephen Don Black, all current or former leaders of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan (KKKK).

        According to Tennessee’s official Norris Dam State Park Website, the spacious indoor pavilion where the Klan gathering was held seats 100 and is “a popular venue for weddings ceremonies [sic] and receptions, company dinners and catered events.” The park’s “Tea Room” facility was rented for $878 for the weekend of Nov. 8th, 2014. State Park officials declined to comment on the record about the event and at first refused to disclose the name of the person or organization that rented the facility.

        Although the Norris Dam State Park brochure recommends several close-by tourist attractions, no mention is made of the historical significance of the nearby town of Clinton, Tenn., as the first city in the South to allow African-American children to attend an all white school. A monument to the “Clinton 12,” a dozen bronze statues of the first black students to attend Clinton High School in 1956, is at a cultural center downtown.

        Mention of the town was made at the Klan meeting, however. Elderly racist chiropractor, Edward Reed Fields, 82, regaled the crowd with his recollections of coming to Clinton in 1956 to organize white supremacist resistance to the desegregation of its schools. His stories about trying to keep Tennessee schools all white earned him a standing ovation.

        History doesn’t celebrate it the same way. In July 1958, Fields and Jesse “J.B.” Stoner launched a violent, neo-Nazi domestic terrorist group called the National States Rights Party (NSRP) in nearby Knoxville, Tenn. Three months later, on Oct. 5, 1958, Clinton High School was almost destroyed in a dynamite blast. Damage was estimated at more than $300,000. The suspected bombers were never prosecuted.

        For more than a decade, Fields’ NSRP engaged in a racist terror campaign, bombing black churches and assassinating civil rights workers, including Willie Brewster, shot and killed in July 1965. Stoner was eventually convicted for a bombing attempt at a Birmingham, Ala., church. Fields went on to produce pro-segregation, deeply racist and anti-Semitic propaganda for the next fifty years. His crude tabloid, The Thunderbolt, was a Klan favorite. It ceased publication in 2008.

        Among the more notable observations by attendees at the secretive gathering, called the “Smoky Mountain Summit,” was the declining health of Stephen Don Black, the aging former Klansman and founder of Stormfront, the largest and most lucrative hate site in the world.

        Described as hollow-eyed and frail, Black, 62, walked with a cane and claimed his back problems prevented him from sitting comfortably in one of the “awful” chairs event attendees were charged $85 to sit in to hear speeches by so-called “movement celebrities.” Praised as a “legendary WN” [White Nationalist] on his own website, Black demonstrated what a former staffer jokingly called his legendary initiative while solving his uncomfortable chair problem at the conference. “One of the womenfolk in my party managed to bring me a chair from our cabin, carrying it up two flights of stairs,” he wrote.

        Like Black, Stormfront is in declining health, having lost more than 60 percent of its audience since April when the SPLC published a report on the group, “White Homicide Worldwide…”

    For God’s sake! Do your job, Tensing jury. You have everything you need. Evidence isn’t going to change. Sam DuBose was shot in the head on video by Ray Tensing when he was no threat. There was no dragging. Tensing lied. Guilty verdict!

      Yeah, this is what I thought yesterday. They must have a hold out and I bet it’s a hold out for a guilty verdict. The rest want acquittal most likely.

      A hung jury is better than an acquittal.

      Well, my first impression is that they might be splitting hairs comparing the prosecution and defense experts. This might indicate disagreement among the jurors about what they heard and what it means. If that is true, which seems likely, then the jury is split.

      We might be looking at a hold out and in our experience, it would probably be a hold out for a guilty verdict since most people seem to want to acquit all cops.

      I’m just guessing, of course. But we might get a hung jury. The whole case depends on whether or not the jury can convince themselves that Tensing killing Mr. DuBose was a legitimate use of lethal force.

    Last I heard verdict was to be announced at 4:00. Then I heard DuBose family arrived at courthouse about 4:10. Right now I don’t know what’s going on, but I’m streaming 100.3 Old School, who will break away when verdict is announced. They will follow that with call in show so people in the community can talk about the verdict. They have not said anything about prospective time as of 1 minute ago. If you can, I’d recommend you live stream them if you can.

    A co-worker who sits next to me is a young African American man whose roots run deep in the city (Mrs. DuBose is his great aunt). He said that if Not Guilty verdict rendered the city will explode based on what he’s seen in social media. Latest news: Lincoln Ware just announced that Sam DuBose’s daughter told him Judge said verdict would be tomorrow and evidently he’s keeping the courthouse open on the holiday.
