Tuesday Open Thread: It’s All Related

The election of THAT MAN to be President is in direct correlation to the Obama Presidency, and also the culture that grew during those years.

I have long said that those who wanted “to make America great again” longed for the delusional world of Mad Men: where they could pretend that they were big fish in a big pond, when the actuality is, they were fish in a pond where 90% of everyone else was shoved into sardine cans. They weren’t competing against everyone else. And, they could pretend that they were so qualified, when the truth is, so many who were qualified were not let into the field.

Two movies coming out this month show this. The first shows the story of women who were hidden to this country. Whose brains and talents were used by this country to win the slave race and put a man on the moon. The movie and the book it’s based upon is called Hidden Figures. I consider myself a very educated woman, and the face that I knew about Bletchley Park years before I knew about these brilliant women upsets me. I just started reading the book, and I think you should get a copy for yourself.

When we learned about the space race in school, all the faces were White, and 9 out of 10 were male. Yet that is not the accurate picture of all who helped win the Space Race.

Check out the movie Hidden Figures when it comes to a theater near you.

Sanders blasts Trump’s HHS pick: ‘What hypocrisy!’
BY NIKITA VLADIMIROV – 11/29/16 06:10 PM EST

“Donald Trump asked workers and seniors to vote for him because he was the only Republican candidate who would not cut Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid — programs that are of life-and-death importance for millions of Americans,” Sanders said in his statement.

“Now, he has nominated a person for secretary of Health and Human Services, Rep. Tom Price, who has a long history of wanting to do exactly the opposite of what Trump campaigned on,” Sanders added.

The Vermont lawmaker outlined Price’s positions and said Trump should publicly admit that his promises “were just lies.”

“Rep. Price has a long history of wanting to cut Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. What hypocrisy! Mr. Trump needs to tell the American people that what he said during the campaign were just lies, or else appoint an HHS secretary who will protect these programs and do what Trump said he would do,” he said.

Trump announced his HHS selection on Tuesday, praising Price as being “exceptionally qualified” to spearhead a campaign to repeal and replace ObamaCare.

“Chairman Price, a renowned physician, has earned a reputation for being a tireless problem solver and the go-to expert on healthcare policy, making him the ideal choice to serve in this capacity,” Trump said in a statement.

“He is exceptionally qualified to shepherd our commitment to repeal and replace Obamacare and bring affordable and accessible healthcare to every American. I am proud to nominate him as Secretary of Health and Human Services,” Trump added.

I watched all three of the presidential debates and I never heard Trump explain HOW he would provide all Americans with healthcare except to parrot that overused RW talking point about allowing insurers to compete in all 50 states.

      • eliihass says:

        He never explained anything…

Never gave any coherent response to anything…never released his taxes..

And 62 million Americans still cast their vote for him…

This man David Clarke is evil…and there’s a special place that awaits him in hell …

“…WASHINGTON ― About a week after Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke visited the Fox News set in New York to appear on the shows “Outnumbered” and “Fox and Friends,” but before he set sail on a National Review cruise, a court-appointed medical monitor visited the jail Clarke is charged with running.

Four people, including a newborn baby, have died at the Milwaukee County Jail since April. One man, a 38-year-old with mental health issues, died of “profound dehydration.” For a facility with a population cap of 960 that previously averaged a couple of deaths per year, the string of deaths is concerning.

During his visit, Shanksy said he was alarmed by the “extremely large number of vacancies” at the facility, particularly for medical positions.

“Questions certainly can be raised about the occurrence of these four recent deaths and the relationship to officer shortages … as well as the health care staffing vacancies and the adequacy of oversight of staff,” Shanksy wrote.

Now Clarke may be overseeing a much larger operation. Clarke was in New York City once again this week to meet with President-elect Donald Trump. He’s reportedly in the running to take over the Department of Homeland Security, and said he would accept a Trump cabinet position if asked.

Clarke’s national profile rose a few years ago when he began making regular appearances on Fox News in late 2014 to talk about policing after the unrest in Ferguson, Missouri, following the police killing of Michael Brown. Since then, he’s made a name for himself by providing a voice for those who want to believe there’s nothing wrong with our criminal justice system and to ignore America’s historic racial inequalities…”

Everyone Trump’s has picked so far is a loser. That’s the common thread.

Mitt Romney is the one who makes me gag. He’s up to something, no doubt. Maybe he thinks he can run for president again in 2020. Whatever it is he wants he is apparently willing to sell his soul for it.

      • Liza says:

        ** Trump has picked **

      • eliihass says:

If only loser was all they were…some if these people are downright nuts, evil and dangerous…

Romney is shameless and sneaky…tells you the lengths these folks will go to to scheme their way into power…nothing is too low…or too slimy…

        McConell’s wife Elaine Chao too…

I remember a NY Times article about her…described her as willing to do anything to climb to the top…and Do anything to stay there…used to have staff follow her behind carrying her bag…

If this is not 3rd world style trading influence, nepotism at it’s worst, I don’t know what is…

These people make it easier for folks to never want to seek out previously unknown relatives…This is just plain spiteful..

One can only imagine how FLOTUS feels about this..

“…Many Kenyans did not expect the election of Donald Trump as US president.

However, Beryl Odinga, the jobless sister to former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, is happy that the world now has a ‘Messiah.’

“Mr Trump, please come and open a Trump Towers in Westlands…,” she said during an interview with The Nairobian , adding that, “…and uplift the plight of the Kenyan people.”

Beryl, who revealed that she isn’t employed anywhere, said she would willingly take up an offer to work for Trump.

Come January 20, 2017, Donald Trump will take over from Barack Obama as leader of the most powerful nation on earth. That, according to Beryl Odinga, would be a Godsend event, since the Obama presidency was “the worst thing to have ever happened to America and Kenya.”

Barack Obama’s half-brother, Malik Obama, who openly supported the candidacy of Donald Trump, is one of the most brilliant men Beryl says she has ever encountered because “he has the capacity to analyse and note all these negative things about Obama. He can see through the hypocrite.”

She added that, “Obama never did anything for Africans. The most memorable thing Obama ever did when he came to Africa was to flirt with some white woman during Mandela’s funeral. As president, Obama sat back and watched his aunt get harassed by the immigration department and he did nothing, yet Zaituni was terminally sick,” scoffs Beryl…”

Trump Picks Anti-Obamacare, Anti-Abortion Rep. Tom Price to Be Health Secretary
    HEADLINES NOV 29, 2016

Donald Trump has picked Georgia Congressmember Tom Price to be secretary of health and human services. Price is the chair of the House Budget Committee, a member of the Tea Party Caucus and one of the leading opponents of President Obama’s Affordable Care Act. Price supports privatizing Medicare. He opposes abortion and has voted to cut all federal funding for Planned Parenthood. He’s also an opponent of marriage equality, with a track record of voting against measures to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation.

      Something’s just got to give…

No way we just sit back and watch as this crew slide in and devastate our country…While the media plays along and distracts Americans with fake jolly talk of Trump and Romney having dinner with their wives…and pretending that the mediocre, corrupt and racist nuts Trump has already announced to his ‘cabinet’ and those in the offing, are just terrific…well-meaning, qualified ‘patriots’…when we all know better…

      Crazy..

      • Liza says:

        It is a nightmare.

I was watching CNBC and they were all excited about the tax breaks for the wealthy. They mentioned that “some” breaks would go to the middle class, but the wealthy will get the really big breaks. So, their point was that the wealthy have to plan to take the most advantage, like wait until after Dec 30 to sell stocks and so forth. And they were talking about this as though it is just the most wonderful thing happening.

    HAT TIP-TOD

WHAT TO DO ABOUT TRUMP? THE SAME THING MY GRANDFATHER DID IN 1930S VIENNA

    By Liel Leibovitz

The first, and most obvious, is this: Treat every poisoned word as a promise. When a bigoted blusterer tells you he intends to force members of a religious minority to register with the authorities—much like those friends and family of Siegfried’s who stayed behind were forced to do before their horizon grew darker—believe him. Don’t try to be clever. Don’t lean on political intricacies or legislative minutia or historical precedents for comfort. Don’t write it off as propaganda, or explain it away as just an empty proclamation meant simply to pave the path to power. Take the haters at their word, and assume the worst is imminent.

    ******************

Which leads me to the third principle, the one hardest to grasp: Refuse to accept what’s going on as the new normal. Not now, not ever. In the months and years to come, decisions will be made that may strike you as perfectly sound, appointments announced that are inspired, and policies enacted you may even like. Friends and pundits will reach out to you and, invoking nuance, urge you to admit that there’s really nothing to fear, that things are more complex, that nothing is ever black or white.

  8. The more I hear of Trump’s picks, flag burning, repealing Obamacare and Bannon, I get even more furious at Democrats for thinking this election was in the bag.

    • Ametia says:

The Dems basically co-signed Trump, by trying to ram Clinton down our throats.

    • Liza says:

I get more angry by the day. Back in the days when I thought the Democrats were going to win this election, I wasn’t nearly this angry. As I said many times, they played a dangerous game, but I thought they would get away with it. Now, of course, they played a dangerous game and we could end up taking so many steps backwards that we may not recover.

I said the same thing about the George Bush administration, that recovery might not be possible. But then Senator Barack Obama stepped up. Does anyone think we’ll get that lucky twice?

What I need right now from the Democrats is some kind of all hands on deck, superhuman effort to take back the Senate and the House in 2018. They owe it to this country to do that. They owe it.

    • eliihass says:

Watching everyone just go along with whatever crap Trump is churning out …

Same folks who were on every media 24 hours a day opining, warning, scolding and commanding…looking to micro-manage and preemptively curb any potential ‘excesses’ of the historic President-elect in 2008 and 2012; talking endlessly about ‘holding his feet to the fire’ …are all now just fine with whatever Donald Trump decides or wishes to do …whatever laws he flouts and whatever law he decides to ignore or break…outrightly violate…and whatever dubious schemes he and his cronies come up with or pull out of their ‘b*tt’ as they go along…
