The second movie that I hope you will see this Holiday Season is the big screen adaptation of the August Wilson play Fences, starring Denzel Washington and Viola Davis.
August Wilson was instrumental in bringing the Black experience, in all its CONTEXT, to the stage. He made sure that our humanity shone through, but always that we never lived in a vacuum, but that our lives were shaped by the external world.
But, those that want to party like it’s 1948:
a) don’t want to see our humanity
b) don’t ever want it to be given CONTEXT
c) don’t want to acknowledge the existence of the outside America that created our CONTEXT

November 30th 2001, I was making funeral arrangements for my Mom. It was so painful. I didn’t want to go to work and I didn’t want to stay home. I didn’t know what to do with myself. I still grieve for her. When I listen to certain Christmas songs, even though they’re so beautiful, I feel so sad. I miss her so much.

Losing our mothers is different from the passing of anyone else. This is the person who gave us life. When my mother died it felt like some primal link had been disconnected. It is just extraordinarily sad.
Despite the passing of time, Christmas does have a way of bringing back these feelings. My father died when I was 10 years old and Christmas was never the same. There were other reasons for that as well, but I still think about him.
I understand, SG2. Holidays are the very time those memories of deceased loved ones come back to tug at our heartstrings.
Feel the sadness and rejoice in the new memories you are creating for you and your family. They are blessed to have you in their lives.

I remember a week or so before Mom died, she was using her walker to go to restroom. She stopped by my room and stretched out her arms for me to come to her and give a hug. I hugged her so tight and I thought at that moment that I was going to remember this hug. And I do.

School tutor charged after student assaulted
Boy, 7, hospitalized with facial injuries

A Baltimore City second-grader was hospitalized after his parents say he was assaulted by a school tutor Monday at his east Baltimore school.
Timothy Randall Korr, 25, of the 3200 block of Foster Avenue, is charged with felony first- and second-degree child abuse, felony first- and misdemeanor second-degree assault, misdemeanor reckless endangerment and misdemeanor neglect of a minor, Baltimore police said.
The parents of the boy, Travon Grayson, 7, who attends City Springs Elementary/Middle School, said their son suffered mouth and facial injuries that will require surgery.
Lateekqua Jackson and Travon Grayson Sr., Travon’s parents, said their son is bruised, swollen, cut and is missing several teeth. They believe Travon was injured when Korr assaulted him.
“My son told me that (Korr) threw my son into a wall,” Jackson said. “My son had dreams about it all last night. He’s still shaking in his sleep, saying that he keeps having visions of (Korr) throwing him into a wall.”
Jackson said the tutor was escorting Travon to the main office for disciplinary reasons at the end of the school day on Monday, but they never made it to the office.
Jackson said that when she got to the school, Travon was in an ambulance and crying. She said the teacher was also there with Travon’s blood on his clothes.

City police said their child abuse detectives responded on Monday to Johns Hopkins Children’s Center to investigate the child abuse claim.
Police said detectives responded to the school and were given access to a video which captured the incident. After viewing the video and examining all other evidence, detectives concluded that a crime had been committed and obtained an arrest warrant for Korr.

Baltimore elementary school student injured while being taken to office

A 25-year-old tutor at City Springs Elementary School was charged Wednesday with felony child abuse and assault after police say a 7-year-old child was slammed against a wall, causing a serious head injury, police said.
Timothy Randall Korr, of the 3200 block of Foster Ave., faces first- and second-degree child abuse, first- and second-degree assault, reckless endangerment and neglect charges, police said. He has been terminated by the Baltimore Curriculum Project, the school’s charter operator.

Police said it’s not known what prompted the incident but department spokesman T.J. Smith said nothing justified the “despicable” act.
“Slammed so hard his body went limp,” Smith said. “To watch a child be basically manhandled like a sack of potatoes is incomprehensible.”
City police were initially called Monday by Baltimore City School police to Johns Hopkins Hospital, where the boy is being treated, to investigate the alleged abuse. The incident was captured on video, which detectives said they viewed when they went to the Southeast Baltimore charter school to investigate. After viewing the footage on Tuesday, police arrested Korr.
Police described Korr as a large man, who weighed 225 pounds, carrying the second grade student a short distance before slamming him. In the video, “they basically saw him slamming a child against the wall,” police spokesman Donny Moses said.

Still Missing the Horror of Medicare Phaseout

We are hearing more about the Trump/Ryan plan to phase out Medicare and replace it with private insurance and vouchers. But we’re still hearing much, much less than about Obamacare or a lot of other issues. Obamacare is super important. Don’t get me wrong. But Medicare is a much, much bigger deal. Most DC journalists don’t actually understand what’s being proposed. You think it’s hard getting good insurance when you’re 30 or 50? Try getting good private insurance when you’re 70 or 80.
Providing health insurance coverage to seniors will unquestionably cost more if run through private insurance. No one who has looked at the comparative data on the cost efficiency of Medicare and private carriers can question this. There’s no money savings. Quite the opposite. The only difference is that seniors will pay vastly more out of pocket because the vouchers won’t come close to the costs of a policy. The upshot of the Ryan plan is significantly increasing the cost of what society pays for the medical care of seniors and then making seniors pay dramatically more out of pocket. All with none of the bedrock gaurantees Medicare provides.
That’s what phasing out Medicare means. Ironically, what Trump and Ryan are proposing is something like Obamacare: you buy your insurance on an exchange and you get some premium support from the government. Obviously, not everyone loves Obamacare. But building an exchange and subsidy adjunct for non-seniors onto an existing and fairly robust private health insurance system is one thing. Creating one from scratch for people who are all pretty much by definition bad risks is close to laughable. Laughable if you’re not bankrupted or dying because you couldn’t get care.
Remember the other things Medicare significantly guard against. If parents have insupportable medical bills or have no way to pay for care, they go to children. In the absence of any other options, that’s how it should be. But that money comes out of other things: buying homes, putting kids through college. The social insurance model of Medicare has positive effects well beyond direct beneficiaries.

* A little over a week ago, the man that Donald Trump will nominate to be the next Secretary of Health and Human Services – Rep. Tom Price – outlined a timetable for getting rid of Medicare as we know it.
The head of the House Budget Committee said Thursday that lawmakers are eying an overhaul of Medicare next year.
Budget Committee Chairman Tom Price (R-Ga.) said he expects lawmakers to push forward with an overhaul “within the first six to eight months” of President-elect Donald Trump’s administration.
He said it would be tackled through the budget tactic in the Senate called “reconciliation,” which allows major spending-related bills to pass the upper chamber without a veto.

n his interview with Michael Wolff, Steve Bannon said something that raised the ire of a lot of liberals.
Darkness is good…Dick Cheney. Darth Vader. Satan. That’s power.
More than a few people went off on rants about how Bannon associated himself with the dark forces of Cheney, Darth Vadar and Satan. But if you bothered to notice what he said next, that is exactly what he was hoping for. The “power” he’s looking for isn’t what resides in that darkness – but in making his opponents react to the idea that it is.
It only helps us when they…get it wrong. When they’re blind to who we are and what we’re doing.
As Bannon made clear throughout that interview, he thinks he’s a lot smarter than his liberal opponents. So he assumes that he can play them by tossing out lines like that one about the power of dark forces and watch them set their hair on fire while he carries on with his plans. In other words, Bannon throws out incendiary bait that triggers System 1 thinking while he strategizes about how to outmaneuver them with System 2 thinking.
System 1: Fast, automatic, frequent, emotional, stereotypic, subconscious
System 2: Slow, effortful, infrequent, logical, calculating, conscious

This is not to suggest that liberals shouldn’t speak up when Trump or Bannon say outrageous things. They just need to recognize when/how they are being played. A perfect example related to the whole Hamilton saga was that, while everyone was reacting to that tweet, it provided a distraction to the fact that Trump settled the law suit related to his so-called “university” for $25 million.
In essence, the Bannon/Trump game is to inflame liberals by being outrageous bullies. It is tempting to simply raise the stakes by bullying back. That’s how they’re setting the table for the game to be played while Bannon maneuvers behind the scenes and laughs at liberal’s for taking the bait.

BERNIE SANDERS: …..And what we were beginning to see with the turnouts, the turnouts at our rallies, more and more people coming out, more and more excitement, more working people, more young people, who indicated to me, in a million different ways, they were sick and tired of establishment politics and establishment economics. They wanted real change. And I will tell you, as the campaign progressed, that it was an awe-inspiring moment, a humbling moment, to be walking out on a stage—I think it was in Portland, Oregon, where the Trail Blazers play in the NBA—and you look out, and there are 28,000 people at a rally in Portland, 25,000 in Seattle, 27,000 in Los Angeles. So people were starting to come out. The word was getting around. And it was especially gratifying to see so much beauty in the faces of young people who want real change in this country.

It was all of the networks that were Trump TV.

They showed more of the open podium waiting for Donald Trump than ever playing your speeches. That’s what—those were all the candidates that night. And they played all their full speeches. They did not play one word of your speech. You were speaking in Phoenix, Arizona, to the largest rally of any of those people that night. They didn’t even speculate where you were.
SEN. BERNIE SANDERS: I wish I could disagree with you. No, no, no, Amy is raising a very—and we go into it in the book. I was stunned. I mean, you know, in the middle of the campaign, you’re not figuring out this stuff or thinking about it. Turns out that from January 1st, 2015, I think, through November 2015, ABC Evening News had us on for 20 seconds.
… And it wasn’t much better on NBC or CBS, all right. And that’s just the simple truth. And there are a couple of points. I think—Amy, correct me if I’m wrong, but I think the guy who’s head of CNN said, “Hey, Trump has been fantastic for us.” I mean, literally said that. “We’re making huge profits from Trump.” And the point to be made is, we had the misfortune of actually trying to talk about the problems facing America and providing real solutions. Trump was tweeting out about how ugly or horrible or disgusting or terrible his opponents were, in really ugly terms. Perfect for the media. That is a great 12-second sound bite. But to talk about why the middle class is in decline or why we have massive levels of income and wealth inequality can’t be done in 12 seconds. And second of all, it’s not something that they are, frankly, terribly interested in.

Eighty-eight percent of Black voters voted for Hillary Clinton — including an astounding 94% of Black women. The second most loyal voting bloc to the Democratic Party? Latinos. Sixty-five percent of Latinos voted for Hillary Clinton.

Now that a black man is no longer going to be leading the White House, we’re are getting a chance to see just how white so many of these houses of government truly are and I’m not here for it. And you should not be here for it either. The Democratic Party appears to have leaned almost exclusively on the Obama Administration for its diversity.
With President Obama in office, not only did the nation get a regular chance to see a wonderful black family, but they saw black Attorneys General, a black head of the Department of Homeland Security, a black Secretary of Education, a black head of the Department of Transportation, Latinos heading up Housing and Urban Development, the Department of Labor, the Small Business Administration and even an even a Latina woman appointed to the Supreme Court. But with Obama on the way out, all of that is out of the window and we must come to grips with the overwhelming whiteness of the Democratic Party.
African-American and Latino voters are the heart, soul and backbone of the Democratic Party. Without our votes, no Democrat can win the White House.

Democrats spend hundreds of millions of dollars, white folk get all the top positions, get 98% of the money, yet count on us to be the most reliable, most loyal voting bloc in the country.
Our loyalty can’t be that cheap. All of this, and so much more, is why I announced this past May that I’d be leaving the Democratic Party after this past presidential election. I voted for Hillary Clinton and wrote half a dozen columns supporting her candidacy, but the party is an absolute mess. What I care for, be it the Black Lives Matter Movement, stopping the Dakota Access Pipeline, the fight for a $15 minimum wage across the country, universal healthcare and many other issues, simply aren’t pressing to the party. That’s troubling and is central to why they lost this past campaign and didn’t take control of Congress.
Right now, Bernie Sanders is my political role model. He’s an independent who will often find natural partnerships with the Democratic Party. If the Democrats don’t make serious systemic shifts, I’m just not willing to shapeshift my values and priorities for their convenience any more.
Over the next few weeks, the Democratic National Committee is going to choose its new leader. It needs to be Congressman Keith Ellison — a progressive Black man who was born in Detroit and is now a beloved Congressman in Minnesota. He has more enthusiastic support than any potential head of the DNC that I can ever remember. Well over 500,000 people signed a petition supporting Ellison. Has that ever happened before for a candidate?
Putting a guy like Congressman Ellison in power would go far to winning over many of us who just don’t feel at home in this party. He is a true progressive.

But here’s the thing — we absolutely cannot assume that any of the changes we wanna see are just going to happen naturally. We have to demand that the Democratic Party, which so badly wants our votes, and wants us to sing and dance before big events, and wants to come on our radio and talk shows, actually looks like us from top to bottom. If we don’t demand it, it won’t happen. It’s that simple.

And when their hand-picked, establishment-groomed candidate predictably starts flailing …isn’t inspiring or moving folks because we can see through their superficial, phony crap… They’ll demand that tam every same FLOTUS they don’t think worthy enough, go out again and try to sell the masses once again, a crappy establishment packaged candidate who might have been pushed up through the political ranks by political Godfathers and Wall Street benefactors, but doesn’t even have the basic authentic human skills necessary to connect with voters in an honest way…and really can’t show what they’ve actually accomplished as they’ve fleeted up from one elected office to the next…
I know that I won’t ever be voting for any of these establishment-selected and pushed through politicians…Not even if FLOTUS is strong-armed to go on the campaign trail for them…after they and their cohorts have once again begun their preemptive efforts to undermine and disrespectfully dismiss FLOTUS…even though she’s made it clear she’s not running..
