The first order of business for me in this new year is to arrange to have surgery that I have put off for a couple of months. After exhaustive research I have decided to have the surgery in Tampa, Florida.

During a wellness exam last September, I learned from my blood test results that I have high blood calcium. This was followed up by a PTH test (parathyroid hormone) which confirmed a diagnosis of primary hyperparathyroidism. This means I have at least one parathyroid gland (people have four of these on the back of the thyroid) that has grown into a tumor (benign adenoma) and is overproducing PTH which regulates how much calcium is in the blood. The consequences of high blood calcium include diseases like osteoporosis and kidney stones. The good news is that it is cured by removing the tumor(s).

Anyhow, this is a kind of cute but very educational video about parathyroid disease:

Liza, good on you for taking care of your health. Thank you for sharing your news with us

I hold the vision with you to have a successful surgery and a speedy recovery.

Your haring this news highlights the importance of these wellness/preventative exams. They catch conditions early and they can be treated properly & promptly.

      • Liza says:

Thank you, Ametia. To be honest, I am scared out of my wits, but I have joined a local support group that has been really helpful. They are really an osteoporosis support group, but so many of them turned out to have parathyroid disease. It is an uncommon disease, but very under diagnosed although that is improving.

    • Liza says:

Now I have to listen to Donald Trump and the Republicans in Congress talk about repealing Obamacare, privatizing the VA, privatizing Medicare, etc…

Last September I walked into a doctor’s office for a routine exam. Three days later I was diagnosed with a disease that requires surgery.

I have a high deductible insurance policy. This surgery will cost me thousands of dollars out of pocket plus the trip to Florida. Since my insurance has a nationwide network, most of my costs will be paid. It is my choice to go to Tampa, of course, but that is where the experts in this surgery are located.

People need to wake up. This could happen to ANYONE at any time.

We’ve got a buffoon president-elect intent on destroying Obamacare and a GOP controlled Congress intent on privatizing the social safety net, effectively destroying it.

    • Liza, I pray for a speedy recovery and complete healing in Jesus Name. Your sharing encourages me to go ahead and have a cyst removed. It’ll be done in office and I’ll make an appointment this week to get it done.

      • Liza says:

My surgery may not be until sometime in mid to late February. I’m going to submit my application to the doctors in Tampa this week and then I have to request all of my medical records to be sent to them. Then there’s a review process, surgical consultation, scheduling, etc… so it will be awhile even though I’m already diagnosed. They review absolutely everything.

I’m glad to hear that you’re inspired to take care of that cyst. If I have learned anything in life about health related problems, it is that you have to take the bull by the horns and do what you need to do. But that also means being your own advocate, doing the research, participating in decisions, getting second and third opinions when you need them, and so forth.

    • Liza, email me the name of hospital when you’re admitted so I can send flowers. I can’t be there in person but I can send my love with flowers.

      • Liza says:

SG2, that is so sweet of you.

You know what? It is an outpatient procedure. I will be in the hospital (Tampa General Hospital) for only 4 to 5 hours.

They start out with a sestamibi scan, then some discussion with the surgeons, then anesthesia, then surgery that averages 20 minutes, then recovery for about two hours.

Amazing but these guys have done something like 25,000 parathyroid surgeries. It’s all they do.

    • yahtzeebutterfly says:

      Liza,
I will be sending a wave of bright healing energy that you will recover quickly from your surgery. 25,000? Those doctors in Tampa certainly have the experience and talent to take good care of you. How great that you have done the research and will have a great doctor! I am glad to hear that it is just a short twenty minute procedure. You will be in my prayers.

      Much love :)

      • Liza says:

TY, Yahtzee. The doctor who founded the parathyroid clinic (now part of Tampa General Hospital) has been doing these parathyroid surgeries for over 20 years. They have seven surgeons right now plus a thyroid surgeon. The cost is the same to me if I have this done in Tucson or Tampa except for the cost of the trip which isn’t too bad. I’ve met six people so far who have gone to Tampa for this surgery and they have all done well.

    • rikyrah says:

      Good luck with your procedure

Take care dear Liza…it’ll be ok…

Fortunate to have the proper diagnosis…and the wisdom and smarts to properly research and find the best facility and specialists to take care of it..

Don’t be scared…you’ll be in the best hands…

You’ll be in my prayers …all our prayers…every step of the way..

And after it’s all done and out of the way, you’ll laugh and wonder why you ever worried…

More importantly, you’ll be able to astutely articulate and share important take-aways with the many who will need similar medical interventions – and don’t necessarily know what to expect…or even where to begin…or how to smartly research and advocate for themselves for their care..

This too shall pass – and before you know it too…and as long as your brilliant mind and wise and good heart remains intact, it’ll all be a fleeting inconvenience – and life will be back to normal in no time..

Take care of yourself …and don’t overthink it…

(And while you wait to be scheduled, If you find yourself feeling more anxious than usual, may I suggest this completely safe, non-interactive, non-addictive, non-sleep inducing, all natural calming aid…Really fantastic for keeping you calm without any side effects…I avoid, and I’m allergic to practically every medication out there, and this has been a god-send – including for calm in the face of all sorts of stresses …and even to get through the claustrophobia of that dastardly enclosed MRI tube…

This from the same line, is also said to be very good…haven’t tried it …but I’ve heard good things about it…

      Take care ok..

      • Liza says:

Eliihass, TY for much needed words of encouragement and also for the stress remedy information. I am a firm believer in holistic medicine.

Rupert Murdoch owner of the slug rags The New York Post, The News of the World, The London Sun, Fox ‘News’…has owned the Wall Street Journal since 2009…

Why anyone thinks that any establishment owned by this despicable and unscrupulous fellow is even marginally decent, boggles the mind…

Unless of course, this is one of those who didn’t mind the WSJ attacking and undermining and engaging in dubious journalism …until Hillary lost…and Trump who was endorsed by all of Murdoch’s ‘news’ outlets ‘won’ and threatens to wreak havoc on the country and the world with his simple, narcissistic mind and megalomania…

    • eliihass says:

As this tweet so accurately sums up, many white men including the English-born WSJ editor, Gerard Baker, really don’t mind Trump…they’ll grift off the buffoon they continue to elevate and embolden…to the detriment of this country and the world…no scruples, no integrity…

Of course, meanwhile the orange POS is Tweeting like a spoiled, rich teenager, while the MEDIA is COVERING UP, DENYING, AND SPEAKING ON HIS BEHALF.

THIS IS HOW IT’S DONE FOLK!

Busboys and Poets will host an alternative inauguration ball at the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Get your tickets now.

A gathering to celebrate the accomplishments and successes of the past 4 years and the vow to continue to be the change we want to see in the world.

“To be hopeful in bad times is not just foolishly romantic. It is based on the fact that human history is a history not only of cruelty but also of compassion, sacrifice, courage, kindness.

What we choose to emphasize in this complex history will determine our lives. If we see only the worst, it destroys our capacity to do something. If we remember those times and places—and there are so many—where people have behaved magnificently, this gives us the energy to act, and at least the possibility of sending this spinning top of a world in a different direction.

And if we do act, in however small a way, we don’t have to wait for some grand utopian future. The future is an infinite succession of presents, and to live now as we think human beings should live, in defiance of all that is bad around us, is itself a marvelous victory.” – Howard Zinn
