After the first 13 days of Donald Trump, many Americans are wondering what in the world is wrong with new president – including the highest ranking Democrat in the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi.
After hammering Trump for naming white supremacist Steve Bannon to the National Security Council while dismissing actually national security figures, Pelosi brought up GOP Rep. Jason Chaffetz’s idea to require presidents to pass a mental exam.
She said she “can’t wait” until the Republican congressman introduces the legislation.
After less than two weeks of his presidency, Trump has proven what so many of people, including his former Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton, said about him during the campaign – that he’s reckless, temperamentally unfit, and simply isn’t competent enough to hold this office.
After throwing tantrums about crowd sizes, causing chaos at America’s airports, threatening war with two countries, and making a deadly and ill-formed foreign policy decision, Pelosi’s concern about the mental state of the new president is shared by millions of people across the country.
The country is just 13 days into the new administration, and a psychological exam of the new president is already long overdue.

New Bill Proposes Constitutional Convention to Amend Constitution to Ban Gay Marriage All Together
Source: LawNewz
by Rachel Stockman | 3:44 pm, February 3rd, 2017
A newly proposed bill in Arkansas calls for a constitutional convention in order to amend the United States Constitution so as to ban same-sex marriage all together across the country. The bill, which was introduced on Thursday by State Senator Jason Rapert (R), would serve as an application to Congress to call a convention “for the purpose of proposing an amendment prohibiting the United States Constitution or the Constitution or Laws of any state from defining or construing the definition of ‘marriage’ to mean anything other than the union of one man and one woman.”
Under Article V of the Constitution, there are two ways to propose an amendment. Congress can propose one by a vote of two-thirds of both the Senate and Congress. The second option, which is being pushed by this Arkansas lawmaker, is that the legislatures of 34 states call for a Constitutional Convention. According to the National Archives, none of the 27 amendments to the Constitution have been proposed by constitutional convention. Nonetheless, a proposed amendment becomes law when it is then approved by at least 38 out of the 50 states.
“I think the country now knows the silent majority is out there and they spoke during the 2016 election, and they’re going to speak again,” Sen. Jason Rapert told KATV.
In Obergefell v. Hodges, the U. S. Supreme Court voted 5-4 saying that the right to marry would also be guaranteed to same-sex couples. This decision overrode many state laws, including in Arkansas, which prohibited same-sex marriage.

Eric Trumps business trip to Uruguay cost taxpayers $97,830 in hotel bills
Source: washington post
By Amy Brittain and Drew Harwell February 3 at 4:12 PM
When the president-elect’s son, Eric Trump, jetted to Uruguay in early January for a Trump Organization promotional trip, U.S. taxpayers were left footing a bill of nearly $100,000 in hotel rooms for Secret Service and embassy staff.
It was a high-profile jaunt out of the country for Eric, the fresh-faced executive of the Trump Organization who, like his father, pledged to keep the company separate from the presidency. Eric mingled with real estate brokers, dined at an open-air beachfront eatery and spoke to hundreds at an “ultra exclusive” Trump Tower Punta del Este evening party celebrating his visit.
The Uruguayan trip shows how the government is unavoidably entangled with the Trump company as a result of the president’s refusal to divest his ownership stake. In this case, government agencies are forced to pay to support business operations that ultimately help to enrich the president himself. Though the Trumps have pledged a division of business and government, they will nevertheless depend on the publicly funded protection granted to the first family as they travel the globe promoting their brand.
A spokeswoman for Eric Trump declined to make him available for an interview and did not provide answers to a list of detailed questions about the trip…………………………

“…The radio personality Howard Stern said that he believes the presidency will be “detrimental” to the mental health of his old friend Donald Trump — because he just wants to be loved.
“I personally wish that he had never run. I told him that. Because I actually think this is something that is going to be very detrimental to his mental health, too. Because he wants to be liked, he wants to be loved, he wants people to cheer for him,” Stern said on his show broadcast on SiriusXM satellite radio on Wednesday. “I don’t think this is going to be a healthy experience for him.”
Stern went on to reveal that he was “shocked” when Trump said he was going to run for president and it’s actually been very “odd” for him personally because the two men have such divergent political views.
“And I don’t even know that he thought this way politically a couple of years ago.”
Stern, who said he was a huge Hillary Clinton supporter, as well as pro-abortion rights, said he remembers when he and the president shared the same beliefs.
“So the new Donald Trump kind of surprised me,” said Stern.
He is worried that the president’s “sensitive ego” won’t stand up to the demands of being the leader of the free world and the criticism that comes with it.
“I know something about Donald Trump, he really does want to be loved. He does want people to really love him. And that drives him a lot. I think that he has a very sensitive ego. And when you’re president of the United States people are going to be very, very critical.”
Regarding the recent executive order to ban immigration from seven Muslim countries, Stern said, “I think his motive is, ‘Wow, people will love me because I’m going to keep terrorists out of the country.’ And I think he’s genuinely shocked when people say, wait a second there is more to this…”
Stern says he warned Trump that he is “not going to be beloved” as president and that taking on the job would be a “nightmare” for the 70-year-old.
He went on to say that Trump is not anti-Hollywood or anti-press – he loves Hollywood and craves their validation – and that all of attacks on him will take their toll on his self-esteem.
“And all of this hatred stuff directed toward him — it’s not good for him. It’s not good.”
Stern firmly believes that Trump’s whole presidential bid just started as a lark so that he could get more money out of NBC when he renegotiated his contract for the Apprentice television show.
“I think it started as kind of a cool, fun thing to do to get a couple more bucks out of NBC for the Apprentice. I actually do believe that.”

WASHINGTON—There are some remarkable stories that have vanished for now in this city. One of the most prominent of these is that out-and-out white supremacy is operating at the very top levels of the executive branch of the government in a way that it hasn’t since, I don’t know, the Wilson administration. The Collected Works of Steve Bannon are bad enough. From USA Today:
“They are motivated. They’re arrogant. They’re on the march. And they think the Judeo-Christian West is on the retreat.”
And, if Bannon isn’t enough, there’s this guy who looks at immigration as an invasion, an act of war. Which, of course, never has been a problem anywhere else in the world, ever. From New York:

Excuse me, EVERYONE, but where are the REMAINING BRANCHES OF THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT?
Good question.
Trump does Wall Street’s bidding, betraying campaign promises
02/03/17 12:48 PM
By Steve Benen
More so than any modern Republican presidential nominee, Donald Trump positioned himself as an opponent of Wall Street. In fact, as regular readers know, the GOP candidate spent months insisting that it was Hillary Clinton, not himself, who’d do the financial industry’s bidding.
Clinton, Trump said, is “nothing more than a Wall Street puppet.” Her campaign is “paid for by her bosses on Wall Street,” he added. The public was told that Clinton is “owned by Wall Street,” “is in [the] pocket of Wall Street,” and is “bought and paid for by Wall Street.”
As it turns out, Trump magically transformed soon after winning the election, tapping industry insiders to help run his administration, and even inviting a Wall Street insider to oversee Wall Street. Today, the new president is going even further, delivering on one of the financial industry’s top policy priorities.
How’s that working for you workin’ class white folks?
How the GOP Became For-Profit College Abuse Deniers
by Stephen Burd
February 3, 2017 12:27 PM
The Republican Party’s stance on for-profit higher education is similar to the one it has taken on climate change. Despite voluminous evidence that a significant share of for-profit colleges have defrauded students and taxpayers, Republican lawmakers refuse to acknowledge that there have been any problems. The G.O.P. has become, over the past two decades, a party of for-profit-college-abuse deniers.
…………………
So what changed in the 20 years between the Nunn and Harkin investigations?
The answer is that the for-profit higher sector transformed itself. The old generation of mom and pop trade schools died off, and by a new breed of for-profit colleges – mostly huge, publicly traded corporations – began to dominate the industry. These corporations were not only much larger, serving tens of thousands of students, if not more, but they also had much deeper pockets than their predecessors, allowing them to shower campaign money to their supporters on Capitol Hill. At the same time, the Republican Congressional leadership began the infamous “K-Street Project,” rewarding industries that were generous to their members. Republican lawmakers who pushed legislation to deregulate these giant for-profit college companies were richly rewarded (as were Democrats, like Rep. Alcee Hastings, who shilled for the industry.) In fact, campaign contributions from the student-loan and for-profit college industries helped propel Republican Rep. John Boehner’s rise to House Speaker.
Republicans responded to these companies’ largess by taking the reins off the industry – essentially giving these schools the green light to rip off students and taxpayers.
In 2002, the Bush administration took the teeth out of a law that Congress had passed a decade earlier to prevent schools from compensating recruiters based on their success in enrolling students. Under Bush, the Education Department issued new regulations creating giant loopholes that allowed for-profit colleges to easily circumvent the law. As a result, in their desire to keep on growing to lift their stock prices and receive ever-larger amount of federal financial aid, many of these companies encouraged their employees to deliberately recruit and admit unqualified students, who ended up taking on significant amounts of debt for training from which they were unlikely to benefit.
And then, in 2006, Republican lawmakers succeeded in striking down another important consumer protection law that limited the growth potential of these companies. By eliminating the “50 percent rule,” which had prohibited colleges from participating in the federal financial aid programs if they enrolled more than half of their students in distance education courses, Congress allowed these companies to carry out their “growth at any cost” strategies. From 2005 to 2010, Bridgepoint Education, for example, expanded its enrollment by over 7,800 percent, from 968 to 77,179 students, according to final report from Senator Harkin’s investigation. Unsurprisingly, considering its extremely rapid growth, the company in recent years has been the subject of multiple federal and state investigations over allegations that it has defrauded students.
Given that their actions helped lead to widespread abuses throughout the for-profit college sector and put students and taxpayers in harm’s way, is it any wonder that G.O.P. lawmakers continue to refuse to acknowledge that there have been any problems? Unfortunately, this incredibly disturbing level of denial means that history will probably repeat itself, with the Trump administration and Republican Congressional leaders trying to take the reins off this often-unscrupulous industry all over again.

Yep, they screamed about tax payers $$$ every time she went on vacation.
entitled MOFOs
More like every time she was every driven through the gates of the White House…even when just on a quick drive into town…and even when she stayed home in the White House…they always questioned and screamed about how much the air she breathe and the water she drank, cost the tax payers…
Because you know, being black – and even though she and her husband were actually millionaires before coming to the White House …and even though they unlike previous presidential families, actually turned down certain traditionally tax payer funded presidential allowances e.g. for furnishing the private residence – and instead paid for such out of their own pocket…. Never mind that they for instance had a chef at home in Chicago – Sam Kass – who they brought with them to the White House – and paid out of their own pocket as their personal chef in the White House residence…
She was automatically deemed indigent …treated as if she’d never even seen a bed or slept in one…and was automatically seen as ‘mooching’ even when it came to routine presidential security requirements that automatically came with the first family position out of structural and restrictive necessities…
But the presumed ‘wealthy’ white occupants who are and have always been the real grifters and moochers and the ones who’ve milked and exploited and pillaged for what it’s worth…are automatically presumed too wealthy, and the White House too beneath them and insufficiently impressive …and so are allowed without any scrutiny, to not just take advantage, but to plunder at will…while the hate-filled folks are still obsessively stalking the Obamas post-presidency, still tracking the phantom taxpayer funded benefits they are supposedly still ‘enjoying’…still tabulating the phantom costs to them as ‘taxpayers’…

Patriots-Falcons Super Bowl Has Become More Than a Game, but a Clash of Cultures
Mike Freeman
NFL National Lead Writer
February 03, 2017
HOUSTON — Michael Strahan fought perhaps the greatest sports culture ever created. The one birthed by the New England Patriots that has dominated football for almost two decades. And Strahan did something unusual against that culture: He beat it.
Strahan was a fearless pass-rusher for the New York Giants prior to becoming a television star and Hall of Famer. Before the team’s 2007 NFC title game against Green Bay, he gave a remarkable speech to the team. It was unusual in that it addressed not only the Packers but also the team the Giants players would see in the Super Bowl. The same franchise now back in the big game and fortified with the support of a United States president.
Strahan ended the speech with these powerful words: “All you hear about is the history of the Patriots and Brady. Brady this, and Brady that. But the past is the past, and it’s time for us to start our history. F–k the past.”

Trump’s Goldman Sachs-Style Economic Populism
by Martin Longman
February 3, 2017 12:01 PM
I know that we live in a post-factual political environment, but optics still matter. That’s why it didn’t make a ton of sense for the Trump administration to send out Gary Cohn, (until two weeks ago) the president and chief operating officer of Goldman Sachs, to explain that “President Donald Trump on Friday plans to sign an executive action to scale back the 2010 Dodd-Frank financial-overhaul law, in a sweeping plan to dismantle much of the regulatory system put in place after the financial crisis.” In his new job, Cohn serves as Trump’s chief economic advisor and the Director of the National Economic Council.
Hillary Clinton was pilloried for given paid speeches in the foxes’ den. Donald Trump unlocked the door and shoved the foxes in the henhouse. In addition to Cohn, he also tapped Goldman Sachs veteran Steve Mnuchin to run the Treasury Department. Mnuchin is best known for his post-Goldman career where he oversaw a scheme to foreclose on people without having the proper documentation, in some cases for being behind in their payments by less than a dollar. All told, during the financial crisis, Mnuchin was responsible for throwing roughly 35,000 people out of their homes.
Gutting the consumer friendly Dodd-Frank law isn’t the only thing on today’s agenda. Trump also plans to sign an executive order “aimed at rolling back a controversial regulation scheduled to take effect in April that critics have said would upend the retirement-account advisory business.” In this case, the optics are about as bad as they can get.
No organization in the country has a worse reputation for failing to act in the best interests of their clients than Goldman Sachs.
……………
For Trump to hire the president and chief operating officer of Goldman Sachs as his chief economic adviser is bad enough, but to actually make him the man to announce the rollback of a regulation aimed at preventing investment advisers from betting against the investments that they recommend, that takes real chutzpah. And to cast the change as beneficial to consumers is beyond risible.
……………..
It was supposed to be a giant tyrannical Kenyan/communist conspiracy every time President Obama attempted to get around an obstructive Congress by issuing executive orders, but it doesn’t seem to bother the Republicans that Trump is issuing a flood of executive orders even when he has a friendly Congress willing to do his bidding. Hypocrisy isn’t the only problem here, though, because these orders are (and should be perceived to be) violations of the trust a lot of working people put in him to look out for their interests.
The Dodd-Frank reforms are primarily designed to prevent another economic meltdown arising from widespread bank failures. The economic advisor regulation is aimed at preventing big investment banks from destroying people’s savings by recommending that brokers handling individual retirement and 401(k) accounts invest in products they are secretly betting will decline disastrously in value.

Trump and his Republican allies cling to the ‘paid protester’ myth
02/03/17 10:46 AM
By Steve Benen
Progressive activists have been very active in Colorado of late, pressuring Sen. Cory Gardner (R-Colo.), among others, to break with his party’s far-right agenda. “It’s just been a fire hose,” the Republican senator said this week.
But Gardner doesn’t seem especially moved by the public outcry. The CBS affiliate in Denver reported, “Gardner said his office is getting so many calls and emails, his has staff assigned to do nothing except respond to them. In one night, his office received 3,000 voicemails. Many of them were from what Gardner calls paid protesters from other parts of the U.S.”
I haven’t seen any evidence to suggest the protesters have been paid, but it’s apparently the assumption Gardner is making to dismiss the progressive activism in his home state – which Donald Trump lost by five points in November.
The conservative Coloradan isn’t alone. Sen. Marco Rubio’s (R-Fla.) press secretary told the Miami Herald the senator’s office was unconcerned with “paid protestors.”
First, I’m deeply amused by the very idea of “professional anarchists.” I also wish that had been the name of my band in high school.
Second, this is common in authoritarian thinking. When the public rallies in support of the leader, those citizens deserve to be celebrated. When the public rallies in opposition to the leader, those citizens should be dismissed as corrupt and ignored.

House Republicans vote to expand gun access for mentally impaired
02/03/17 10:07 AM—UPDATED 02/03/17 10:26 AM
By Steve Benen
When an American suffers from a severe mental illness, to the point that he or she receives disability benefits through the Social Security Administration, there are a variety of limits created to help protect that person and his or her interests. These folks cannot, for example, go to a bank to cash a check on their own.
If congressional Republicans have their way, these impaired people will, however, be able to buy a gun. USA Today reported:
………………
While GOP proponents of the bill argued that it’s unfair to limit the rights of the mentally disabled, Rep. Mike Thompson (D-Calif.), among others, explained, “These are not just people having a bad day…. These are people with a severe mental illness who can’t hold any kind of job or make any decisions about their affairs.”
This did not prove persuasive to Congress’ far-right majority, which supported the measure that enjoyed the enthusiastic backing of the National Rifle Association.
So let me get this straight….every radicalized American that has ever committed a mass casualty is designated a lone wolf with mental issues, so it reasons that we should let mentally ill people have guns and then make sure we remove radicalized americans from terror watches. Yeah totally not obvious what this white supremacist committee is up to. We are effed!

” …Russia is carrying out a sustained campaign of cyber attacks targeting democracy and critical infrastructure in the West, UK Defence Secretary Sir Michael Fallon has warned.
Moscow hoped to destabilise governments, expand its influence and weaken Nato by “weaponising misinformation” he said.

The defence secretary pointed to a “persistent pattern of behaviour” by Moscow, highlighting a series of cyber attacks that had been linked to Russia.
“Today, we see a country that in weaponising misinformation has created what we might now see as the post-truth age.
“Russia is clearly testing Nato and the West. It is seeking to expand its sphere of influence, destabilise countries and weaken the alliance.
“It is undermining national security for many allies and the international rules-based system.
“Therefore it is in our interest and Europe’s to keep Nato strong and to deter and dissuade Russia from this course.”

“…EU leaders appeared to rebuff Theresa May’s offer to be a “bridge to Donald Trump” within hours of her arriving at an informal summit in Malta.
Both German Chancellor Angela Merkel and François Hollande, the French President, will “debrief” other EU leaders today with their own impressions of the new US President, it was announced.
The move immediately downplayed Ms May’s role in formulating an EU response to the Trump phenomenon – a role she hoped to take on, as the only leader to have met him face-to-face.
Meanwhile, Dalia Grybauskaite, the Lithuanian President, told the BBC: “I don’t think there is a necessity for a bridge – we now communicate with the Americans on Twitter.”

State Department differs with White House on Holocaust statement
02/03/17 09:20 AM—UPDATED 02/03/17 09:33 AM
By Steve Benen
It never occurred to me this would still be a story a week later, and yet, here we are.
According to Politico’s report, the State Department’s Office of the Special Envoy on Holocaust Issues “prepared its own statement for International Holocaust Remembrance Day.” As it has in the past, the department’s statement commemorated the Holocaust’s Jewish victims.
The White House chose to issue its own statement, which obviously went in a different direction.
Team Trump puts Iran ‘on notice,’ won’t explain what that means
02/02/17 04:49 PM—UPDATED 02/02/17 05:00 PM
By Steve Benen
Mike Flynn, Donald Trump’s controversial National Security Adviser, appeared in the White House press briefing room to make a brief statement yesterday, declaring, “As of today, we are officially putting Iran on notice.”
The president himself added on Twitter this morning Iran “has been formally PUT ON NOTICE for firing a ballistic missile.” Press Secretary Sean Spicer used the same phrase this afternoon with reporters.
The trouble is, no one seems able to say what “on notice” means in the context of U.S. foreign policy. Sure, we remember Stephen Colbert’s “on notice” board, but when it comes to the White House, it remains an unexplained mystery.
I’ll say it again..
He’s the Secretary of EXXON….
the rest of this means absolutely nothing to him.
Persecution of Putin opposition a test for Tillerson
Michael McFaul, former U.S. ambassador to Russia, talks with Rachel Maddow about dangers political opponents of Vladimir Putin face, and the increased anxiety with Putin admirer Donald Trump in the White House and Putin friend, Rex Tillerson installed as Secretary of State.
Team Trump points to imaginary ‘Bowling Green Massacre’
02/03/17 08:00 AM—UPDATED 02/03/17 08:30 AM
By Steve Benen
Donald Trump and his White House team have had a fair amount of time to come up with compelling defenses for the president’s Muslim ban. So far, their rhetorical pushback isn’t going especially well.
Trump World said only 109 people were denied entry into the U.S. under the policy, but that number wasn’t true. They tried to argue President Obama did the same thing, but that wasn’t true, either. They said the policy had to be sprung on people in order to be effective, but that too wasn’t true. An Associated Press fact-check found a variety of other misstatements related to the controversial executive order.
But as the Washington Post noted, Kellyanne Conway appears to have taken her affection for “alternative facts” to a whole new level.
And if there had been a massacre in Bowling Green that went ignored by rascally news organizations, Trump’s White House counselor might have a credible point.
But the massacre “didn’t get covered” because it doesn’t exist.
This incident, which did get covered, is what Conway appears to be referring to: “In May [2011], two Iraqi refugees living in Bowling Green, Ky., were charged with trying to send sniper rifles, Stinger missiles and money to the Qaeda affiliate in their home country. Neither of the men, Waad Ramadan Alwan, 30, and Mohanad Shareef Hammadi, 23, was charged with plotting attacks within the United States. A federal sting operation prevented the weapons and money from going to Iraq.”
The men were arrested, charged, and convicted. They’re both in federal penitentiaries now.

Spreading the word:
Easy action item from a friend: If you are disturbed about Steve Bannon’s presence on the National Security Council, the Senate Committee on Homeland Security is taking calls about Bannon’s appointment to the NSC. You can call 202-224-4751. You’ll get a voice mailbox as they are taking messages. You can just simply say that you strongly object to Bannon being on the National Security Council. The call takes about 45 seconds. Cut & paste to share.
I did my call.

Purge at the Secret Service???
Only news so far is at this Twitter feed
https://mobile.twitter.com/SCClemons/status/827411751813599232
They’re purging the Secret Service…the very same agency that had some of its anti-Obama agents quitting in 2009 to run for political office, all while being granted spots on CNN and FOX ‘news’ to pontificate and criticize the historic President…
Meanwhile, Harold Ford, Willie Geist, concurring with the bloody right-wing editor of the right-wing Weekly Standard, about fake ‘free speech’ re: the asshole from Breitbart ..
Talking about how the left needs to be more open to ‘opposing’ ‘ideas’ and ‘perspectives’…
How it’s ‘dangerous’ that people like Michelle Malkin and the hate-filled, self-loathing, racist idiot from Breitbart with ‘opposing views’ are not allowed on liberal campuses to enable the ‘exchange’ of ideas…
Talking about how Cory Booker and Rachel Maddow should escort the hate-filled white supremacists and racists like Milo Yiannopolous and Michelle Malkin onto liberal campuses and insist that they be heard…and encourage an ‘exchange of ideas’..
What sort of ‘exchange of ideas’ exactly are these assholes advocating with hate-filled racists, who aren’t necessarily principled proponents of any particular ideology as much as they are hate-filled racists and greedy opportunists who throw flames for attention and to carve a niche for themselves to line their pockets…
What sort of ‘exchange of ideas’ would Rachel Maddox and Cory Booker be advocating with hate-filled racists like the Briebart idiot or the hate-filled and malicious Michelle Malkin as they escort them onto liberal campuses …? Folks who are driven not only by deep-seated racist hate, but also the dollars that line their pockets feeding their racist audiences eager to mainstream and normalize their hate speech…folks who are more interested in cruel and gratuitous denigration and dehumanizing insults like labelling the historic FLOTUS a ‘tranny’….calling her an ape and sustainedly slandering her in very cruel and damaging ways…
Willie Geist is infinitely more offended that Milo Yiannopolous isn’t allowed to speak on a liberal campus, than he is about Steve Bannon a white supremacist sitting in the White House, dismantling civil right protections and dictating policy…
Good Morning, Everyone 😐😐😐
I agree.
