Breaking News: Attorney General Jeff Sessions spoke TWICE with Russian Envoy during Trump campaign

jeff-sessions-liedAmerica’s top law enforcement compromised. Jeff Sessions LIED under Oath to Congress about Trump-Russian ties. Oh, what a tangled web we weave; when first we practice to deceive. How in the living hell can Jeff Sessions #DOJ investigate Trump-Russian ties when intelligence says he spoke to Russian ambassador TOO? HE MUST RESIGN! He’s unfit for office. Then LOCK HIM UP‼️

Then-Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) spoke twice last year with Russia’s ambassador to the United States, Justice Department officials said, encounters he did not disclose when asked about possible contacts between members of President Trump’s campaign and representatives of Moscow during Sessions’s confirmation hearing to become attorney general.

One of the meetings was a private conversation between Sessions and Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak that took place in September in the senator’s office, at the height of what U.S. intelligence officials say was a Russian cyber campaign to upend the U.S. presidential race.

The previously undisclosed discussions could fuel new congressional calls for the appointment of a special counsel to investigate Russia’s alleged role in the 2016 presidential election. As attorney general, Sessions oversees the Justice Department and the FBI, which have been leading investigations into Russian meddling and any links to Trump’s associates. He has so far resisted calls to recuse himself.

When Sessions spoke with Kislyak in July and September, the senator was a senior member of the influential Armed Services Committee as well as one of Trump’s top foreign policy advisers. Sessions played a prominent role supporting Trump on the stump after formally joining the campaign in February 2016.

Putin Demands Sessions Resign from Russian Government

MOSCOW (The Borowitz Report)—In a stunning rebuke of the Attorney General, Russian President Vladimir Putin has demanded that Jeff Sessions resign from the Russian government “at once.”
Speaking at the Kremlin, Putin said that the controversies swirling around Sessions in Washington “no longer make it possible for Jeff Sessions to function as an integral part of the Kremlin team.”

Putin asserted that Sessions had “become a distraction,” and ordered the Alabama native to clear out his desk at the Kremlin “by Friday morning at the latest.”
While Kremlin sources said that forcing Sessions’s resignation was “a necessary measure,” they would not guarantee that he was the only member of the Trump Cabinet who would be expelled from the Russian government.

Bush Ethics Lawyer Says Sessions Must Go
    by Martin Longman
    March 2, 2017 1:07 PM

Richard W. Painter, who served as the Bush administration’s chief White House ethics lawyer from 2005 to 2007, was pretty quick to put together a little opinion piece for the New York Times after news broke last night that Attorney General Jeff Sessions lied during his confirmation hearing.

He wants us to know that this has happened before and that it had very specific consequences:

In 1972 Richard G. Kleindienst, the acting attorney general, appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee in a confirmation hearing on his nomination by President Richard Nixon to be attorney general. He was to replace Attorney General John N. Mitchell, who had resigned in disgrace and would later be sent to prison in the Watergate scandal.

Several Democratic senators were concerned about rumors of White House interference in a Justice Department antitrust suit against International Telephone and Telegraph Corporation, a campaign contributor to the Republican National Committee. They asked Kleindienst several times if he had ever spoken with anyone at the White House about the I.T.T. case. He said he had not.

That wasn’t true. Later, after Kleindienst was confirmed as attorney general, the special prosecutor, Leon Jaworski, and his team uncovered an Oval Office tape recording of a phone call in which Nixon told Kleindiesnt to drop the I.T.T. case. Kleindienst claimed that he thought the senators’ questions were limited to a particular period, not the entire time during which the case was pending.

Jaworski didn’t buy it. He filed criminal charges against Kleindienst, who was forced to resign as attorney general. Eventually Kleindienst pleaded guilty to failure to provide accurate information to Congress, a misdemeanor, for conduct that many observers believed amounted to perjury. He was also reprimanded by the Arizona State Bar.

As usual, Josh Marshall has interesting things to say about this. He says it has all the signs of big, shattering scandal, with people more distantly involved being picked off as they try to cover up. According to Marshall, they cover up because they know it’s bad

    .

This is what I’ve been saying. The IC is leaking out information. They got Flynn out. They will get Sessions out. They know how deep these Russian connections are. They know what Trump has done, is doing. The know there are Russian agents in the White House. They need those people gone because until they are the IC can’t do their jobs.

So they’ll keep leaking information. They want Congress to do their jobs but if they don’t or won’t, then they’ll start leaking information about Members of Congress. The Republicans are in this up to their eyeballs. Their best move is to demand full investigations now, but they can’t because they will be implicated. They hope to avoid that, but they won’t. The longer it goes on, the worse it will be for them.

    Tick tock, motherfuckers.

    Jeff Sessions Should Resign
The Attorney General blatantly lied during his confirmation hearing.

    by Martin Longman
    March 2, 2017 12:24 AM

Before we discuss whether or not Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III perjured himself during his Attorney General confirmation hearings, let’s look at what he said about President Bill Clinton perjuring himself in front of a grand jury and what he thought that meant for his fitness to serve as the “chief law-enforcement officer of the land.”

    ……………..

You know, it’s fair to say that the president is the chief law enforcement officer of the land, but it’s also accurate to say that about the Attorney General. The president wears a lot of hats, and he basically relies on his Attorney General and the Department of Justice to enforce the law. The buck ultimately stops with Donald Trump, but it’s more accurate to say that Jeff Sessions is in charge of law enforcement. By his own standard, if he committed perjury in a congressional hearing, “equal justice demands that he forfeit his office.”

So, why don’t we watch a little video of Jeff Sessions lying to Sen. Al Franken during his confirmation hearing.

    ……………………….

I don’t know if there are big or small coincidences, or just coincidences, but it would be some kind of coincidence if the only guy on the Senate Armed Services Committee who was serving as a surrogate to Trump was the only member to meet with the Russian ambassador and it didn’t have anything to do with the campaign.

I need to go back and look at the September 8th timeframe and see how it checks out with stories that were unfolding at the time, as well as things that were suggested in the British dossier.

There is so much smoke here at this point that we’re either looking at a volcano or the shadow of a smoking gun.

Sessions knew what Franken and Leahy were asking and he knew why they were asking it. He lied.

Sessions is still saying he will recuse himself “if necessary”. This is this amazingly arrogant attitude Republicans have adopted- that they and they alone determine ethical issues. You know what this is? It’s elitist. Mere mortals have to follow rules. The powerful make their own rules and we can trust them to do that because they are IN FACT better than other people. It is offensive to even question whether they are self-interested.

For ordinary people criminal justice is a set of bright-line rules and demands and they comply. They comply because they know they will get hammered if they don’t. He thinks the rules and laws that apply to every person they parade thru in belly chains and plastic slippers are a matter of his personal discretion.

It can’t BE any reason than he thinks he’s better. That’s the only explanation.

They are turning their own justice system into a joke. No regular person will have ANY faith in it and they shouldn’t. It’s two-tiered. Blatantly.

Just to add to my above comment: Ambassadors don’t freelance. Even if they wanted to they can’t, because everything they do is seen as an official action of the nation they represent. This is one reason why ambassadors don’t generally meet alone with individual senators at all, let alone without a script or an official reason. Being an ambassador is a little like being a judge. You have to be really careful not to give the wrong impression even in your social engagements.

I think it’s bullshit for the simple reason that I watched the tape and the way to make that distinction is to make the distinction. Say exactly that: I met twice as a Senator but not as a surrogate.

Sessions is a fucking weasel. There was a way to do this in a forthright manner and he didn’t.

He bothers me a lot because he was desperate for this job. He really, really wanted it. My sense then and now is he would say or do anything to get it and keep it. You saw what his first two acts were- they both targeted minority groups on civil rights. The moment he got that power he so desperately wanted he went after ordinary people who are vulnerable. THAT’S his character. No one has to guess anymore.

@Kay: Because he, like most people, has no real idea how the Intel Community works. It probably never occurred to him that the NSA does standard, constant, routine monitoring of Ambassador Kisylak’s communications and any other signals intel they could collect. Moreover, even if he did know that or it occurred to him, he probably didn’t realize that it wouldn’t just be logged like a police investigation going through phone records or a trap and trace, but that a complete transcript of the call would be generated and then, because a US citizen was on one side of the call, compartmented and marked so it wouldn’t be accessed until/unless there was an intelligence/counterintelligence need to do so.
