#ProfileInCourageAward: Winner | President Barack Obama

BOSTON — Former President Barack Obama will be making a visit in Massachusetts Sunday to accept an award in Boston.

Obama was named the recipient of the 2017 Profile in Courage Award and is set to receive the award at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Dorchester.

The award was created in 1989 buy members of President Kennedy’s family, and is given to public servants who have made courageous decisions without regard for personal consequences.

Obama will be honored for the passing of the Affordable Care Act, restoring diplomatic ties with Cuba, and his effort to fight climate change.

“President Kennedy called on a new generation of Americans to give their talents to the service of the country,” Kennedy’s daughter, Caroline Kennedy, said in a statement. “With exceptional dignity and courage, President Obama has carried that torch into our own time, providing young people of all backgrounds with an example they can emulate in their own lives.”

Jack Schlossberg, JFK’s only grandson, will be presenting Obama with the award. The evening will also include a performance by James Taylor and remarks by Ambassador Caroline Kennedy.

      Yeah, I think millions of people had that exact same thought at the same time tonight.

      I really liked his speech especially that he talked quite a bit about JFK. I remember JFK but most Americans don’t. And I also liked what he said about passing the ACA, that many members of Congress knew they were giving up their chances of being re-elected but voted for the bill anyhow because it would help the people who needed it. People don’t seem to be aware of that, and I’ve never heard any significant expressions of gratitude before tonight.

      Yes, tonight was indeed a poignant and very sad reminder of what we no longer have.

      Believe it or not, I remember when James Taylor had a full head of hair. I used to listen to his music [albums and 8 Tracks] when I was a freshman in college. Al Green was a big hit at the time, too. James Taylor was what we’d call a “Dreamboat.” I know it may seem unusual for a young black female in the 1970s to admire a white male, but the reason I have always done so is because he has always stood for the right things: equality and justice for all. I feel really blessed that he’s still among us. He never shied away from speaking what was on his mind in the early 1970s, and he’s not about to stop now.
