Trump Revealed Highly Classified Information to Russians

President Trump revealed highly classified information to Russian officials during a meeting last week at the White House, two US officials confirmed to BuzzFeed News.

The meeting included Russia’s ambassador, Sergei Kislyak, and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. The disclosures were first reported by the Washington Post, which cited current and former US officials who said the information was considered so sensitive that some details had been withheld from American allies and was restricted within the US government.

Two US officials who were briefed on Trump’s disclosures last week confirmed to BuzzFeed News the veracity of the Washington Post report, with one noting that “it’s far worse than what has already been reported.”

The Senate Intelligence Committee was also briefed on Trump’s disclosures, one of the officials said. Sen. Mark Warner, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, was not briefed, according to his office. Other members of the committee also said they did not receive a briefing.

A CIA spokesman declined to comment on the record when reached by BuzzFeed News. The official referred requests for comment to the National Security Council, which did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The classified information Trump shared included intelligence on ISIS that had been passed to the US by a partner, which was not identified. But Trump’s disclosure was considered a potential blow to the intelligence-sharing arrangement, and White House officials reportedly moved quickly to contain the fallout.

After news of Trump’s revelations broke Monday, Sen. Bob Corker — a Tennessee Republican and chairman of the Foreign Relations committee — said “obviously they’re in a downward spiral right now and they’ve got to figure out a way to come to grips with all that’s happening.”

“And the shame of it is, there’s a really good national security team in place…but the chaos that is being created by the lack of discipline is creating an environment that I think makes — it creates a worrisome environment,” Corker told reporters in Washington, DC.

Sen. Chris Murphy, a Connecticut Democrat, told reporters on Capitol Hill that if the story is true, “it’s another brick in the wall of a really, really troubling connection between Trump and the Russian government.”

“I don’t know when it will be enough for Republicans to understand that we need to get to the bottom of the connection between the president of the United States and the Russian government,” said Murphy, who sits on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Sen. Lindsey Graham said Monday afternoon that if the reports about Trump revealing information were true “it’d be troubling.” Warner called the revelations “a slap in the face to the intel community.”

The meeting between Trump, Lavrov, and Kislyak happened the day after the firing of FBI Director James Comey, who had been running an investigation into Russian interference with the US election, as well as potential ties between Trump’s campaign and Russia.

Initially, the stated reason for Comey’s firing was his handling of the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s private email server. However, in an interview with Lester Holt, Trump later said he was thinking of the Russia investigation when he fired Comey.

    PRESIDENT TRUMP’S disclosure of highly classified information to senior Russian officials was the most disturbing demonstration yet that he is dangerously unprepared to handle sensitive national security matters. On Tuesday, Mr. Trump essentially confirmed a Post report that he provided details of the Islamic State’s plotting of airline attacks to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Ambassador Sergey Kislyak in an Oval Office meeting last week. The Post reported that the information could allow Moscow to identify the source of the intelligence, which came through a foreign government with which U.S. spy agencies have a fragile relationship.

    The consequences of the president’s lapse could be far-reaching. In addition to disrupting a vital flow of intelligence and possibly endangering agents on the ground, Mr. Trump has let the world know that he and his administration cannot be trusted with sensitive information. Governments that share their secrets with the CIA, from Britain to Israel to Australia, may feel compelled to recalibrate their cooperation. Those that don’t have a cooperative relationship, such as Russia and China, will try to use their access to Mr. Trump to extract more indiscretions.

    It’s not surprising that if you go back and look at the three most significant presidential scandals in modern history (Watergate, Iran-Contra, Lewinsky) that you’ll discover that partisans stayed mostly loyal to their president and that the most likely to turn were the most moderate members from the most competitive states and districts. You can call this putting partisanship over country if you like, and I think that’s fair.

    But, at the same time, people work hard to get presidents elected for specific reasons, and when a president is at risk of going down it puts a lot more at risk than the fate of one chief executive. Without getting bogged down in the qualitative differences between burgling your opponents’ headquarters, trading arms to terrorists, and lying about an extramarital dalliance, there were people who actually cared about policy who stood to lose if their champion was laid low.

    For conservatives who worked feverishly to deny George H.W. Bush the 1980 Republican nomination, the loss of Reagan would have been a catastrophe. Fans of Nixon couldn’t be comforted by the idea of the more moderate Gerald Ford taking over the job. I don’t think Gore presented the same stumbling block to supporters of Clinton, but he didn’t have the same once-in-a-generation political talent which became obvious when he “lost” to George W. Bush in 2000.

    Trump is a different animal. Who are the people who really stand to lose if Trump is replaced by Mike Pence? They’re not serving in Congress, that’s for sure. Almost no one in Congress endorsed Trump. Almost none of them preferred him to Pence in January, and even fewer do so now.

    The Republicans chafe at accusations of putting party ahead of country, which they have done, with breathtaking success, since the election of the first African-American president. But since the Democrats are usually doing the accusing, the Republicans and their apologists have parried by calling it the “politics of division.”

    Peter Wehner, a conservative with the Ethics and Public Policy Center, told NPR in January that Barack Obama was “unusually divisive. He constantly accused Republicans of putting party ahead of country. And that kind of rhetoric, over a sustained period of time, has consequences. And I think that some of the failures of the Obama presidency led, unfortunately, to the Trump presidency.”

    This is why Americans hate Washington. Plain-to-see reality gets spun in the Cuisinart of partisanship until facts are meaningless, no one is at fault and nothing matters. To illustrate how rooted this is, Wehner defended the above claim today after the Washington Post reported that President Donald Trump personally gave classified information about the Islamic State to two Russian envoys.

    Trump’s blunder, conscious or not, has sparked a global reaction. The Associated Press reported Tuesday that European intelligence is reconsidering whether to share future information with an American president who can’t be trusted with it. Moreover, the information Trump gave was “need to know” only. That means lives and security are stake. That means Trump is himself a threat. That means he’s making our country more vulnerable to the next September 11.

    But Trump isn’t the problem. If we had two healthy, functioning and patriotic political parties, members of the Congress could move to hold the president accountable through a variety of means. That isn’t going to happen, because the Republicans, no matter Trump’s outrage, will stand with the president as long as doing so yields partisan victories they have long coveted. In other words, the Republicans are putting party ahead of country.

      Bringing those Russian benefactors of his into our Oval Office…even as the American press was shut-out from covering any of it, should have been the first clue that this was not going to end well…

      The spitting out of classified information by a braggadocios empty vessel, so insecure, so out of it and so out of his realm, and always seeking ways to impress, and always eager to prove that he knows something and that he’s really, really smarter and somehow even remotely knowledgeable, than he marginally is, is only just the tip of the iceberg…

      NATO is scrambling, and not just to accommodate the buffoon and his short span, but to figure out ways to navigate around having a useful and productive gathering all while conscious of and careful to protect secrets and classified information from the leaky-mouth, shallow, vindictive, unscrupulous buffoon who if he doesn’t blurt out stuff just to show-off, would have no qualms spitefully blurting out classified stuff – and only to spite NATO officials anytime his delicate feelings are hurt…or one or two NATO folks have not sufficiently stroked his massive ego that overcompensates for his shrunken bits…
