A crowd gathered outside the courtroom after a jury found Tulsa police Officer Betty Shelby not guilty of first-degree manslaughter in the shooting death of Terence Crutcher, an unarmed black man, last year. “Bring her out,” the crowd yelled, referring to the officer. “No justice, no peace, no racist police.”

Betty Shelby, the Tulsa police officer who fatally shot an unarmed black man last year, was found not guilty of first-degree manslaughter by a jury late Wednesday.

The jury deliberated for nine hours before announcing its verdict. Juror #22, who was the foreman, was crying as the verdict was read.

Shortly after the ruling, a small group gathered to protest the verdict.

“You don’t deserve to die because you’re black,” a young white woman yelled outside the court. “We need better training for police officers!”

Behind her, a group of people chanted “hands up don’t shoot” as they walked down the streets.

Shelby, who is white, was charged last September with felony manslaughter in the shooting of Terence Crutcher, 40.

Police said Crutcher failed to obey commands, and Shelby testified she thought Crutcher was reaching for something in his SUV.

    Republican Rep. Kevin Cramer is spreading dangerous lies about health care access, giving his constituents wrong information in order to bolster the GOP’s health care repeal goals.

    Rep. Kevin Cramer (R-ND) has repeatedly and falsely claimed that a law mandating hospital emergency rooms provide care to anyone who needs it is the same thing as “universal health care” — a cruel interpretation of the law that has become an article of faith for Republicans.

    Cramer, who may run against Democratic Senator Heidi Heitkamp in 2018, made his statement in at least four appearances over the last two weeks.

    At a town hall meeting, he told constituents, “We have universal health care access because we require by law and by tradition and by compassion that any person that walks into an emergency room receives care.”

    In another appearance, Cramer said, “In the early ’80’s or mid-’80’s we…passed a law requiring health care for everybody in the United States of America. That was 30 plus years ago. So that means no one can be turned down for care.”

    He also made the claim in two radio interviews, and at another town hall meeting, as repeated justification for his vote in favor of the Republicans’ health care repeal plan, which would strip health insurance from at least 24 million Americans.

    Betsy DeVos Wants to Kill a Major Student Loan Forgiveness Program

    A lot of people who went to grad school, or who are at least thinking about it, are going to be extremely unhappy if not outright panicked when the Trump administration releases its first detailed budget next week.

    As part of its plan to slash the Department of Education’s budget by some $10.6 billion, the Washington Post reports that the White House will propose ending the federal student loan forgiveness program for public sector and nonprofit workers, and lengthen the amount of time Americans will have to spend repaying their debts on income-based plans if they borrowed to get an advanced degree.

    Under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program, which the administration’s budget would reportedly kill off, student borrowers can currently have their debts erased if they spend 10 years working for a government or nonprofit employer. The program was created in 2007 in order to encourage more Americans to go into public service, but has become more controversial as some have criticized it as a back-door subsidy for expensive graduate degrees—the people who have signed up for so far tend to have high loan balances more typical of someone who went on to get a master’s or a J.D. rather than a mere bachelor’s. In 2015, the Obama administration proposed capping the amount of debt that could be forgiven at the federal loan limit for undergraduates, or $57,500. But Trump and his education secretary Betsy DeVos would go a step further by eliminating it entirely. As the Post notes, it is unclear what that would mean for borrowers currently working their way toward forgiveness.

    Iowa lawmakers voted in April to strip Planned Parenthood of $400,000 in
    annual payments, which the group received as reimbursement for providing
    STI tests, contraception, and cancer screenings at no cost to patients
    on Medicaid. The funds cannot be used to pay for abortions.

    The payments to Planned Parenthood came from a $3m Medicaid fund that
    the federal government provided to Iowa so the state can subsidize
    family planning services.

    But, now because Iowa has violated Medicaid rules by blocking Planned Parenthood, the state will lose the entire $3m.

    Planned Parenthood’s opponents felt it was worth it.

    Report: Trump Official Offered Insurers Quid Pro Quo For O’Care Repeal

    A top official in the Health and Human Services Department allegedly suggested that if insurers supported the House GOP Obamacare repeal bill, the administration would continue funding subsidies that President Trump has threatened to halt that keep out-of-pocket costs down for low income consumers, the Los Angeles Times reported.

    The offer — put forward by Seema Verma, the Trump-appointed administrator of the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare (pictured above) — left insurance industry officials “stunned,” the newspaper said.

    “It made no sense,” one of the officials told the Times.

    The subsidies are known as cost-sharing reduction payments, and they go directly to insurers to subsidize costs like deductibles and co-pays for low-income consumers, as mandated by the Affordable Care Act. They are the target of a House GOP lawsuit mounted in 2014 against the Obama administration that claims the payments are illegal because they were not explicitly appropriated by Congress. The case is on hold while the House GOP and the Trump administration figure out their next steps, but Trump on his own has threatened to halt them because he believes that would force Democrats to negotiate on repealing Obamacare.

    Insurance companies have warned that an elimination of the payments will cause them to jack up their premiums to make up the shortfall or withdraw from the market entirely. Insurers have also raised concerns about the whether the Trump administration will continue to enforce the individual mandate after an executive order signed in January suggested they wouldn’t. Early filings for the 2018 plan year have shown major hikes in premiums, which Republicans have pointed to to justify their repeal effort.

      This is how I got my Pomeranian. She was my first and only foster dog. I don’t know how she ended up at the animal shelter, but was adorable and she made herself right at home so I adopted her. She lived another nine years after that.

        Pomeranians are cute as everything and so smart. Expensive too. I was at this person’s house and their dog was barking so at me…not use to me. The owner said to the dog…Lisa, go to your room and off she went to her room. LOL!

    The president learned of Mr. Rosenstein’s decision around 5:35 p.m. on Wednesday when the White House counsel, Donald F. McGahn II, walked into the Oval Office to tell him.

    Mr. Trump, who was looking through papers, reacted calmly but defiantly at first, according to two people familiar with the events, saying he wanted to “fight back.” Realizing the seriousness of the situation, he quickly summoned his staff, including Sean Spicer, the press secretary; Michael Dubke, the communications director; Mr. Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner; Reince Priebus, the chief of staff; Hope Hicks, a longtime aide; Kellyanne Conway, a senior adviser; and Stephen K. Bannon, his chief strategist.

    Most of those gathered recommended that the president adopt a conciliatory stance, and release a statement accepting Mr. Rosenstein’s decision and embracing a swift investigation that would clear the cloud of suspicion hovering over the West Wing.

    Mr. Kushner — who had urged Mr. Trump to fire James B. Comey, the F.B.I. director — was one of the few dissenting voices, urging the president to counterattack, according to two senior administration officials. After a brief discussion, however, calmer heads prevailed, and Mr. Trump’s staff huddled over a computer just outside the Oval Office to draft the statement that was ultimately released, asserting the president’s innocence and determination to move on.

    By the end of the process, Mr. Trump was calm, grimly determined to soldier on and uncharacteristically noncombative, according to people close to the president.

    Michael Flynn and other advisers to Donald Trump’s campaign were in contact with Russian officials and others with Kremlin ties in at least 18 calls and emails during the last seven months of the 2016 presidential race, current and former U.S. officials familiar with the exchanges told Reuters.

    The previously undisclosed interactions form part of the record now being reviewed by FBI and congressional investigators probing Russian interference in the U.S. presidential election and contacts between Trump’s campaign and Russia.

    Six of the previously undisclosed contacts described to Reuters were phone calls between Sergei Kislyak, Russia’s ambassador to the United States, and Trump advisers, including Flynn, Trump’s first national security adviser, three current and former officials said.

    Conversations between Flynn and Kislyak accelerated after the Nov. 8 vote as the two discussed establishing a back channel for communication between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin that could bypass the U.S. national security bureaucracy, which both sides considered hostile to improved relations, four current U.S. officials said.

    It looks like Chuck Schumer’s advice not to pick a fight with the intelligence community is right: every major news organization got a scoop yesterday. This one went to McClatchy. The Times’ allotment was that Trump’s team knew that Flynn was under investigation before he came to the White House. The Wall Street Journal learned that the Israeli source Trump burned was the most important source we have on ISIS. Reuters has an exclusive on the 18 contacts the Trump campaign had with Russia. And of course the Post got a recording of Kevin McCarthy saying that Trump and Dana Rohrbacher are on Putin’s payroll. I don’t know if that last one was from the “deep state” but the rest were sure leaked by someone from a national security agency. That’s just in one day, which leads me to believe that they have a lot more (otherwise they would drip, drip, drip it out).

      The message this sends over and over is that, in this country, a cop can kill with impunity. Any lie told by a cop(s) will be accepted by a judge or a jury despite conflicting video evidence that proves the cop(s) guilty. And this has been going on since the Rodney King video. It means that the “rule of law” that everyone likes to talk about is nothing but a sham in this country. And it’s always been a sham, not even a distant goal we were trying to achieve. Just a sham.
