Friday Open Thread | Jared Kushner Now A Focus in the Russia Investigation

Last week, it was reported that a person inside the White House had become of interest in the Russia investigation.

Today, the Senior Adviser was named -Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner.

From the Washington Post:

Jared Kushner now a focus in Russia investigation
By Matt Zapotosky, Sari Horwitz, Devlin Barrett and Adam Entous May 25 at 6:33 PM

Investigators are focusing on a series of meetings held by Jared Kushner, President Trump’s son-in-law and an influential White House adviser, as part of their probe into Russian meddling in the 2016 election and related matters, according to people familiar with the investigation.

Kushner, who held meetings in December with the Russian ambassador and a banker from Moscow, is being investigated because of the extent and nature of his interactions with the Russians, the people said.

The Washington Post reported last week that a senior White House official close to the president was a significant focus of the high-stakes investigation, though it did not name Kushner.

FBI agents also remain keenly interested in former Trump national security adviser Michael Flynn and former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, but Kushner is the only current White House official known to be considered a key person in the probe.

The Post has not been told that Kushner is a target — or the central focus — of the investigation, and he has not been accused of any wrongdoing. “Target” is a word that generally refers to someone who is the main suspect of investigators’ attention, though prosecutors can and do bring charges against people who are not marked with that distinction.

“Mr. Kushner previously volunteered to share with Congress what he knows about these meetings. He will do the same if he is contacted in connection with any other inquiry,” said Jamie Gorelick, one of his attorneys.

In addition to possible coordination between the Kremlin and the Trump campaign to influence the 2016 presidential election, investigators are also looking broadly into possible financial crimes — but the people familiar with the matter, who were not authorized to speak publicly, did not specify who or what was being examined.
……………………..

In addition to the December meetings, a former senior intelligence official said FBI agents had been looking closely at earlier exchanges between Trump associates and the Russians dating to the spring of 2016, including one at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington. Kushner and Kislyak — along with close Trump adviser and current attorney general Jeff Sessions — were present at an April 2016 event at the Mayflower where then-candidate Trump promised in a speech to seek better relations with Russia. It is unclear whether Kushner and Kislyak interacted there.

Read the complete article at the link.

Very interesting that they brought up the Mayflower Hotel. Remember, Mr. Kushner ‘ forgot’ to put all sorts of contact with foreign entities as he applied for a Security Clearance.
But, it’s all a coincidence….right?

Black Farmer Calls Out Liberal Racism In Powerful Facebook Message
    By Zeba Blay

A black farmer has the internet talking after posting a powerful message on social media about race relations in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Chris Newman, owner of the Sylvanaqua Farms in Albemarle County, shared his thoughts on a recent “Love Trumps Hate” counter-protest on Saturday. The rally was held in response to white supremacist Richard Spencer leading a protest against the removal of a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee.

“I’d like to appreciate [the Love Trumps Hate rally],” Newman wrote in a Facebook post published on May 17. “But frankly I just don’t.”

Newman went on to call out the subtle racism of his neighbors, who purport to be progressive and inclusive but have yet to acknowledge the fact that Charlottesville is, by his estimation, “the most aggressively segregated place” he’s ever lived in.

The farmer recounted that he’s been racially profiled and questioned by police several times after receiving “strange looks from a passerby.”

“It isn’t Richard Spencer calling the cops on me for farming while Black,” Newman wrote. “It’s nervous White women in yoga pants with ‘I’m with her’ and ‘Coexist’ stickers on their German SUVs.”

In an interview with CBS affiliate Newsplex on Wednesday, Newman said that the racial profiling he receives has gotten so bad that he has stopped doing food deliveries from his farm to wealthier neighborhoods in the area. He told the station that the fact he experiences racism on a day-to-day basis is the main reason he made the Facebook post.

“The thing that bothered me wasn’t so much the protests themselves, but the back-patting after it,” Newman said. “There’s a difference between confronting racists and confronting racism.”

Here’s his (really good) Facebook post:

A message to Charlottesville about Lee Park from your local Black farmer:

I know some folks are really feeling themselves about this whole Love Trumps Hate counter-rally to Richard Spencer’s punch-worthy shenanigans in Lee Park. I’d like to appreciate it, but frankly I just don’t.

I’ve lived in several cities and visited many more before Charlottesville. I like this town for its natural beauty, it’s small size, the friendliness of its people, and its food. But folks, here’s something else: Charlottesville is by far the most aggressively segregated place I’ve ever lived in or visited. And that seems a strange thing to have to say about a town that hosts a public university.

I say “aggressively” for two reasons. One, because of how assertive police (and the citizens who summon them) are here with racial profiling. It got so bad in 2014 – 2015 that I stopped renting farmland on estates where I could be easily seen from the road, and I stopped making food deliveries into wealthier neighborhoods because of how often police would “happen by” and sometimes even question me five or ten minutes after I got a strange look from a passerby (usually someone jogging, but occasionally someone in a car). I’m not a paranoid kinda guy, but this happened way too often to be a coincidence.

It isn’t Richard Spencer calling the cops on me for farming while Black. It’s nervous White women in yoga pants with “I’m with Her” and “Coexist” stickers on their German SUVs.

Second is the sheer degree of cultural appropriation going on with businesses in the city proper. It’s little things – e.g. shops and other businesses incorporating wide swaths of hiphop culture into their branding while having not a single Black owner, partner, employee, or vendor. And those businesses are KILLING IT here. This is a town where Blackness advances White-owned brands and subjects Black-owned businesses to inspection by law enforcement.

Do you really think that problem comes from people like Richard Spencer?

Check out C’Ville Weekly’s Instagram feed when you get a moment, and try not to notice that the few depictions of Black people are limited to sports, singing, criminal justice, or single parenthood. White people, meanwhile, are represented as political activists, chefs, cogs in the gig economy, musicians, dancers, people who get married, visual artists, songwriters, architects, landscapers, thespians, artistic directors, wedge-heel-wearing rugby players, dog lovers, farmers, firefighters, and people who play with their kids in cul de sacs.

Richard Spencer is not the editor of C’Ville Weekly.

Truth is, as a Black dude, I’m far less bothered by the flag wavers in this picture than this town’s progressives assuming its race problem has nothing to do with them. The former is a visual inconvenience. The latter could leave my daughters without a father.

So please, put down the candles and instead ask yourself: why is my city like this? Why is life like this for Black people in my wonderful city? The answer is a lot closer to home than Richard Spencer or Lee Park.

      Yup..

It’s the very same faux-progressive/feminist crowd and mindset that in some instances, even sometimes joined in – albeit anonymously – and never once stepped out to protect or forcefully speak up in defense of the historic first black FLOTUS as she was mercilessly maligned and dehumanized in the most vicious ways…

Even as most of them are now so vocal and ‘upset’ and effusive in their push-back against supposed ‘slut-shaming’….and fiercely defensive and protective of, and imploring sympathy for the ‘poor, private, delicate, hostage’…the complicit, Birther 3rd wife of the despicable Birther buffoon…A callous, self-serving woman who even declared that a female journalist who was attacked with anti-Semitic slurs by alt-right supporters trolling on behalf of herself and her buffoon husband, ‘brought it upon herself’…

Fortunately, there are those of us who’ve never been confused about the brazen hypocrisy and lack of self-awareness of many so-called ‘progressives’ and ‘feminists’..

    • Liza says:

Yeah, I think the “I’m with her” type of “feminists” have taken their selective liberalism to a new level.

Chris Newman’s post actually upsets me. I looked through his FB “Sylvanaqua Farms” timeline and it’s really interesting. He is a young, clean cut (quite handsome) black entrepreneur who has chosen to be a farmer. Why in the blazes would anyone be afraid of him especially when he is a known person in the town where he works, makes deliveries, etc…? Well, we know the answer. They’re afraid of all black men. And they believe (even though they would never admit to this) that the burden is on black men to not scare them. But that is impossible because to do that the black men would have to be white.

Coal Miners Crushed As White House Admits Trump Lied About Bringing Back Coal Jobs
By Jason Easley on Fri, May 26th, 2017 at 12:59 pm

The White House’s real position on bringing back coal jobs was revealed after Trump economic adviser Gary Cohn made it clear in a meeting with reporters that coal isn’t even good feedstock anymore, and the future of American energy is in natural gas, solar, and wind.

Cohn’s comments are the opposite of what Trump promised during the campaign when he said, “We’re going to get those miners back to work … the miners of West Virginia and Pennsylvania, which was so great to me last week, Ohio and all over are going to start to work again, believe me. They are going to be proud again to be miners.”

The truth is that the coal jobs are gone, and they aren’t coming back. Trump lied to former and current coal miners in places like West Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, and Western Pennsylvania.

Coal company bankruptcies and job losses in the Appalachian region weren’t caused by “federal regulations” as the company owners and Republicans like to claim. Automation within the industry, the natural gas boom, and declining international demand for coal are the real reasons behind the decline.

It was a rare moment of truth from the Trump administration that is likely to be walked back by the White House. The coal jobs aren’t coming back. Trump’s advisers know this even as the President continues to sell a fantasy to a depressed economic region of a coal based revival that is never going to come.

Richmond students rise above — on a private jet to L.A.

    By Otis R. Taylor Jr.

    May 26, 2017

A line of black SUVs — looking like the motorcade of a dignitary or celebrity — parked at the curb of a hangar at the Buchanan Field in Concord.

But the occupants weren’t famous. They were middle-school students from Richmond arriving for a flight on a private jet.

As they walked into the hangar, businessmen carrying briefcases and duffel bags looked up in surprise to see the students settling into the leather seats in the JetSuiteX lounge.

By being the most improved students at their schools, the 19 students earned the private flight coordinated by For Richmond, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving Richmond, and JetSuiteX, a company that runs short-haul flights from Concord to Burbank and Las Vegas.

For about half of the students, it was their first time on the plane — and their first time traveling outside of the Bay Area.

It was the inaugural flight of “LA for a Day,” a program For Richmond hopes will let students see the possibilities that lie beyond their neighborhoods. If you want to change the course of at-risk youths’ lives, show them what’s hovering above and beyond their world.

But you’ve just got to get them on the plane first.

    ……………………….

Kyra Worthy, For Richmond’s executive director, met Alex Wilcox, the JetSuiteX CEO, at a luncheon. Wilcox told her he was looking for a nonprofit to work with, and he asked Worthy to think of something that made sense in Richmond.

The idea took off from there. Worthy plans to take high school students on a flight to tour colleges in Los Angeles. And in the fall, she wants to take local high school football players to a UCLA football game. Takkarist McKinley, a graduate of Richmond’s Kennedy High School and a recent first-round pick by the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons, played at UCLA.

“This is showing that we can do anything,” Worthy said. “Sometimes the kids, they’re embarrassed being from Richmond, because they don’t hear too many positive things about it.”

Messiah Espinoza, 12, told me she likes jets.

“I’ve just never been on one,” said Messiah, who attends King Elementary School and was the lone elementary school student on the trip. “I’m ready to go.”

    5:03 PM – 26 May 2017

    • Liza says:

Earlier today the Democrats were being criticized (on either CNN or MSNBC) for not putting some resources behind Quist in this race. I don’t know the story of this race, I do know that Bernie campaigned with Quist. I also heard that Gianforte had brutal TV ads against Quist which is probably true given what a nasty piece of work he seems to be.

Some folks might say, and I have in fact heard this, that no one could have predicted that Gianforte would have slugged a reporter and narrowed the margin giving the Democratic candidate a chance.

I hate to think this is happening AGAIN, but it does appear that the Democrats are just going to blow off candidates who they believe can’t possibly win.

They did this in my congressional district in 2016, failing to support Matt Heinz who ran against Martha McSally. Hillary won this district and it seems Matt Heinz could have as well with some major support. He is a medical doctor who has already served in the state legislature. I have no idea why the Democrats thought Matt was a lost cause.

This is the problem that needs to get worked out. Folks need to get on the same page and quickly.

The Turkish government has issued an arrest warrant for Oklahoma City Thunder center Enes Kanter for being a member of a “terror group,” according to a pro-government Turkish newspaper, The Daily Sabah.

Kanter is a vocal supporter of Fethullah Gulen and the “Gulen Movement.” After a military coup attempt in 2016, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan placed blame for the attempt on Gulen and his supporters.

Gulen, a Muslim spiritual leader, has spent the last 15 years in exile in Pennsylvania. Gulen has denied claims of involvement with the coup.

Kanter appeared to mock the arrest warrant in his native Turkish as part of a retweet of the Daily Sabah’s report.

      No surprise really..

It’s clear by now that even some self-described ‘progressives’ are quite comfortable with how things are shaping up lately…the re-emergence of white supremacy…and power back in the ‘trusty’ hands of old white men…no matter how dumb, ignorant, buffoonish, corrupt, embarrassing, treasonous and life-threatening..

The truth is that even among Europeans and even in the Arab world, there are those quite comfortable with power returning to a white man…they only wish the buffoon wouldn’t discomfit them so with all the acting out…and erratic behavior…

Most, frankly, don’t have a problem with the buffoon at the helm…they just want him to stick to the script and ‘act presidential’…they really don’t care that he knows nothing…as long as he’s white and a ‘billionaire’ – no matter how faux …they don’t care about the particulars…

A black man and his black wife as symbols of power and as the platinum standard of exemplary leadership and inspiring role models for the world, was just more than some could bear…and at the very first opportunity, they all quickly rallied behind the most stunningly ignorant, vacuous and immoral buffoon – and not only ignored his glaring shortcomings, but actively provided him cover – even for his treasonous dealings…

The sustained effort to attempt to explain away and to justify and downplay the crazy that now runs around as the face of America….and inhabits the People’s House, is a desperate attempt to cling to any semblance of whiteness ‘in charge’ …no matter how buffoonish, intellectually inferior, spiritually and morally bankrupt…or embarrassingly hollow..

To have that Birther buffoon, his shady, imported Birther 3rd wife, and the complicit daughter-wife and her husband flying around in our Air Force One – and worse, being referred to by titles and honorifics that they are completely unworthy of, and have no business using, …and to have folks catering to them too with a straight face, has to be the cruelest joke God in his infinite humor, has ever temporarily played on America and the world…

May this seriously traumatic nightmare end sooner than later…
