Wednesday Open Thread | Are Berniebots on the DNC Attempting to Change the Rules to Suppress the Black Vote?

Found at the following twitter thread:

Armando‏ @armandodkos

Are Bernie delegates on Dem Unity Commission and Rules Committee proposing a radical change to delegate selection process for Pres. Noms? /1

I fear they are. And their proposals would gut the voting power of POC. Here is what I fear- that Bernie delegates are proposing /3

That in States that have closed primaries, those result be discarded and delegates be chosen by open caucus- turning State run primary /5

Into a beauty contest while having the delegates chosen in sparsely attended caucuses. Example – Nebraska has such a system. /6

The Bernie delegate proposal I suspect will make system mandatory. This Florida, which is controlled by GOP, could have closed primary /7

but have the result of millions of votes thrown out in favor of sparsely attended caucuses that are difficult for POC and working voters/8

It is a cynical and outrageous idea that will disenfranchise millions of POC. And that’s the design. It’s what they want to achieve. /9

I’m sounding the alarm now so it doesn’t happen. Join me in demanding @TomPerez publicly reject this proposal. /10

This attempt to rig the primary must be stopped. /11

It is not a coincidence that Bernie Sanders and his supporters have never stated that primaries are better than caucuses. /12

That all this is happening in back rooms not public forums, is not a coincidence. They want to present as a fait accompli-price of unity/13

I expect a walkout will be threatened if their proposal isn’t accepted. I’m for Unity but this price is simply too high. Let them walk. /14

If Bernie’s delegates deny and reject my surmises, I’ll be happy and will gladly apologize to them. Small price to pay. /15

From Reign of April:

April‏Verified account @ReignOfApril

Bernie people really are going to be our downfall in 2018, & possibly 2020. Not Trump supporters. They’re a disease killing us from within.

Zerlina is right about Black women being the base of the Dem party. Now think about how Bernie supporters are trying to destroy the party.

The freaking lightbulb just went off. I KNEW what I was seeing, but now it makes so much more sense. The racism, misogynoir, all of it. Wow.

Whew. Gahtdamm. Look at it. They are threatened by our power. So instead of working with us & letting us lead, they want to tear it all down

So, Chairman Perez…what say you? Are you going to allow the dismissal of millions of loyal Democratic Party Voters and their voices?

    Attack Tests Movement Sanders Founded
    By YAMICHE ALCINDORJUNE 14, 2017

WASHINGTON — The most ardent supporters of Senator Bernie Sanders have long been outspoken about their anger toward Republicans — and in some cases toward Democrats. Their idol, the senator from Vermont, has called President Trump a “demagogue” and said recently that he was “perhaps the worst and most dangerous president in the history of our country.”

Now, in Mr. Sanders’s world, his fans have something concrete to grapple with: James T. Hodgkinson, a former volunteer for Mr. Sanders’s presidential campaign, is suspected of opening fire on Republican lawmakers practicing baseball in Alexandria, Va.

That shooting on Wednesday, which wounded four people, may prove to be an unexpected test for a movement born out of Mr. Sanders’s left-wing, populist politics and a moment for liberals to figure out how to balance anger at Mr. Trump with inciting violence.

“I am sickened by this despicable act,” Mr. Sanders said in a statement. “Let me be as clear as I can be. Violence of any kind is unacceptable in our society, and I condemn this action in the strongest possible terms. Real change can only come about through nonviolent action, and anything else runs against our most deeply held American values.”

His most prominent followers said that blaming all of Mr. Sanders’s supporters for the actions of one was akin to blaming all Muslims for the actions of the Islamic State.

“It doesn’t make sense to me, not with this shooting and not with blaming an entire Black Lives Matter movement when a random black man shoots a police officer,” said Shaun King, a columnist for The New York Daily News who campaigned for Mr. Sanders.

He added that violence would not help move liberal policies forward: “If 20 Republican congressmen were shot and killed, it would not improve the chances of us having a better health care system. It’s nonsensical.”

To be sure, supporters of Mr. Trump, as well as Mr. Trump himself, have assailed opponents and the news media.

But long before the shooting on Wednesday, some of Mr. Sanders’s supporters had earned a belligerent reputation for their criticism of Hillary Clinton, the Democratic Party and others who they believed disagreed with their ideas. Sanders fans, sometimes referred to derogatorily as “Bernie Bros” or “Bernie Bots,” at times harassed reporters covering Mr. Sanders and flooded social media with angry posts directed at the “corporate media,” a term often used by the senator.

The suspect in the shooting in Virginia put a new spotlight on the rage buried in some corners of the progressive left.

After 152 Mass Shootings In 2017, It Took An Attack On Congress To Get Our Attention
Mass shootings in 2017 are outpacing those in previous years.
      By Nick Wing

Apart from the setting ― a tony neighborhood in Alexandria, Virginia, just outside of Washington D.C.― and the high-profile targets, the episode was sadly not all that remarkable. It was the 153rd mass shooting of the year, in just 165 days, according to a tally by the Gun Violence Archive, a not-for-profit organization that tracks shootings across the country. Hours later, the 154th appeared to be unfolding in San Francisco.

Mass shootings have only rarely made national headlines in 2017, but they are so far outpacing the rate seen in recent years.

We’re 5.5 months into 2017 and we have 154 shooters. But the GOP trash talkers choose to focus on the one guy who shot at them and, interestingly enough, blame it on progressives because the shooter supported Bernie Sanders.

Let us pause and take note of which side of the political spectrum actually tried to do something about these shootings:

Can I be honest fam..?I don’t want to ‘unite’…not under the current terms and conditions the cry for unity is being ‘offered’…and especially not with so much outstanding, unresolved, and unreconciled national business… including seriously inhumane and treasonous stuff still pending…

We can’t have ‘unity’ with the illegitimate Putin-installed sh*t-stirrer in chief, his corrupt brood and kkklan and alt-right cohorts still undeservedly perched comfortably in the People’s House that he and his alt-right cohorts have now seriously desecrated,…inhaling meatloaf and birthday cake served with ice cream scoops – 2 for him, and 1 for everyone else..

And screw the so-called ‘bi-partisan’ congressional baseball game…

You want us to be impressed, elected representatives paid by tax payers to represent us..? Get to work actually doing the right and humane thing on behalf of America’s vulnerable, and stop lining your pockets and kowtowing to the tax-break, undo all regulatory oversight needs of the oligarchs who own you…at the expense of basic human protections for the least among us…

We have no interest in silly, valueless, empty calories offered by a ‘bi-partisan’ congressional baseball game that offers precious nothing….especially as the republican-controlled congress is hard at work cruelly decimating hard-won rights and protections, and protecting and enabling the Russian-owned buffoon currently installed in our House, self-servingly dismantling our democracy as we know it, along with devastating our fragile union, even as they all conveniently turn a blind eye to the shenanigans of a well-known hostile foreign government hard at work aiding and abetting the megalomaniac buffoon – and even funding some of their own political campaigns…

No thinking person with a conscience and working heart should be hoodwinked into indulging congress any of this ridiculous and insulting, and tone-deaf, empty self-congratulatory fake bi-partisan display ….this now suddenly convenient, phony, one-sided, kumbayah baseball ‘unity’ game that offers and changes absolutely nothing..

“…A District police officer accused of threatening Michelle Obama has been cleared of administrative charges related to the first lady but was found guilty of posting a derogatory job description on social media and depicting the president as a communist, his attorney said Monday.

Members of a departmental review board ruled that Christopher Picciano, a 17-year veteran who was a member of the elite presidential motorcade detail, should be suspended without pay for 40 days for conduct unbecoming an officer. His attorney, James W. Pressler, said his client is weighing an appeal. The city had sought to have Picciano fired.

“We’re pleased that he was exonerated of all allegations that he made threats against the first lady,” Pressler said. “He has maintained from the beginning that it was an off-the-cuff remark, a joke.”

The U.S. attorney’s office had declined to file charges against the officer, agreeing with the Secret Service that Picciano was not serious with his comment about Michelle Obama. But during the investigation, detectives found troubling though unrelated postings on the officer’s LinkedIn and Facebook accounts.

Those included a communist emblem — a hammer and sickle — superimposed over a campaign poster of President Obama and Picciano’s self-described job description as “zoo keeper of the MPD.” Angry with the D.C. Council over a vote to curtail pension benefits, Picciano wrote on Facebook about taking a rifle to a tall building…”

Racist tweets by Jeff Flake’s son

Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake’s teenage son, Tanner, went by the name “n1ggerkiller” in an online game, and posted YouTube comments using the word “nigger” and calling Mexicans “the scum of the Earth.” On his Twitter account, he made prolific use of the word faggot and called his friend a “Jew” for stealing a joke.

A few hours after the Flake story appeared, Stanton reported that Nevada Rep. Joe Heck’s son, Joey Heck, had posted equally stomach-turning comments to his Twitter account. In addition to his repeated use of “faggot” and “nigga,” he made anti-gay and anti-Mexican remarks, saying NFL quarterback “[Mark] Sanchez can hop the border faster than he can throw the ball” and retweeted “There are gays everywhere. Maybe that’s gods way of thinning out the population because faggots can’t have babies.” Being a politically minded young lad, he also commented that ABC’s Martha Raddatz should not have been a presidential debate moderator because she’s a woman and that Mitt Romney made Barack Obama his “slave” in a presidential debate. Heck also said that Obama’s main accomplishments as president were promoting the sports of “spear chucking and rock skipping. The sports they do in his home country…”

Matt Heinz says he’ll have another go at Martha McSally’s congressional seat
By Joe Ferguson Arizona Daily Star Jun 13, 2017 Updated 21 hrs ago

Matt Heinz will again challenge Republican Martha McSally for the Arizona Congressional District 2 seat.

The Tucson Democrat, who works as an emergency room physician, says the district needs a change in leadership. On Tuesday, Heinz announced he would again enter the CD2 race, hoping to challenge McSally next year.

Heinz, who got 43 percent of the vote last November, says he took a lot of time after losing to McSally to consider whether he’d challenge her again.

But over time, it was his patients who helped convince him to run.

They would want to talk politics, not the pressing medical condition that brought them into the emergency room, he said.

Heinz will enter an already crowded field of Democrats seeking the nomination. A half-dozen candidates that have already announced their campaign.

    http://tucson.com/news/local/govt-and-politics/matt-heinz-says-he-ll-have-another-go-at-martha/article_669a8d48-5054-11e7-b5ef-eb54ce48431e.html
    .

    • Liza says:

      Herein lies the problem.

McSally’s seat is ripe for the picking. Heinz is a good man who has served in the state legislature, he is not a political newbie. And much of the reason that McSally won in 2016 is that she had almost 8 million in her war chest while Heinz had 1.5 million. McSally was not hurt, for some reason, by toeing the obstructionist GOP party line and was able to create the perception that she is a moderate, a women’s advocate, etc…And McSally creamed Heinz in a district won by Hillary Clinton.

Well, that has changed. Her over the top enthusiasm for Trumpcare and her 100 percent Trump score really should finish her in CD2.

Some prominent Democrats are trying to recruit former House representative Ann Kirkpatrick who lost to McCain in 2016 but did very well against him in Pima County where she now lives.

Finding the right candidates and bankrolling them is a HUGE problem, huge.

      • majiir says:

I also found it weird that McSally held a meeting with bankers and not with her constituents last week. In the meeting, she admitted that many GOPers in Congress are ”extremely concerned” that they may lose their seats next year because of Trump’s irrational behavior and positions on critical issues. I have zero sympathy for her or them because no matter what Trump does/says, they continue to support him with their votes in Congress.

    • Ametia says:

McSally sounds like a REAL PIECE OF WORK.

      • eliihass says:

Like most republicans…she sounds quite ‘special’ …

It’s like more than everyone else, those who identify as republicans lack a certain humanity, and were in many cases, specially created without souls – and in a special lab heavily contaminated with lead …that did as much damage to the empathy and logic side of their brains..

Listening to Rand Paul and most of the republicans this morning after the incident, and one realizes that even though most politicians are malignant narcissts, some are much worse than others…so far gone, they’re dead on the inside…and not even events that typically jolt normal human beings out of their hardened state, moves them to be and do better..

      • Liza says:

If Republicans succeed in rigging the 2018 election, Trump’s unpopularity won’t matter.

    by Mike Males
    June 14, 2017

In the wake of accumulating scandals and low popularity plaguing President Donald Trump’s White House and the failures of the even more unpopular Republican Congress, Democrats eagerly anticipate huge electoral victories in the 2018 midterm elections, perhaps taking both the House and Senate.

Democrats’ high hopes for 2018 overlook one huge complication. Republicans may not allow anything resembling a free election in the 27 states where they hold complete legislative/executive control or veto-proof legislatures — or nationally, if Congress (under Section 1, Article 4 of the Constitution) imposes voting restrictions on states. Montana’s special congressional election, in which Republican billionaire Greg Gianforte defeated Democrat Rob Quist despite choke-slamming a reporter on the eve of the election, received a ton of national news coverage. But what didn’t get enough attention is that Gianforte was helped by the record-low turnout Republicans had hoped for, proving yet again that Democrats depend on vigorous voter participation.

Despite some promising recent Supreme Court rulings, Democrats may not be able to count on the judiciary to protect the right to vote. Chief Justice John Roberts declared that “nothing should be read” into the Court’s decision to let stand the Fourth Circuit’s rejection of North Carolina’s brazenly racist voting law based on narrow issues of standing, not merits.

The Court—whose newest member, Neil Gorsuch, harbors evident support for Republican-instigated voter suppression—may soon have another seat for a right-wing ideologue to fill. That eventuality, despite an encouraging ruling against gerrymandering (in which Gorsuch didn’t participate), would likely mean the rubber-stamping of almost all voter suppression tactics by the Court.

To provide the rationale for suppression, Trump has appointed a “Presidential Commission on Election Integrity” stocked with key politicians committed to disenfranchising the Democrats’ young, urban, nonwhite base. The commission chair is Vice President Mike Pence, and co-chair is Kansas Secretary of State Chris Kobach, the most extreme official champion of drastic limits on voting based on blatantly false fear-mongering.

Kobach, among many demagogueries, baselessly accused supposed illegal Somali voters of stealing an election, promised he would prosecute “hundreds” of “likely” illegal-immigrant voters, and was the source for “the president’s unsupported claim that millions of illegal votes tipped the popular vote in Hillary Clinton’s favor.” Kobach also baselessly claimed that out-of-state residents voted illegally in New Hampshire to defeat Republicans.

Sessions Couldn’t Get His Story Straight About Russia
    by Nancy LeTourneau

Yesterday I suggested that Attorney General Sessions was nervous and defensive during his testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee. He did nothing to bolster confidence in himself or this administration. Most of the reaction will be to Sessions’s bizarre invoking of what we might call “preemptive executive privilege” to avoid answering questions..

Sessions seems to invoke pre-emptive executive privilege – saying he can’t comment on convos w/ Trump unless Trump approves questions.

    — Ali Rogin (@AliABCNews) June 13, 2017

Yvette Cabrera has a good rundown on that.

I’d like to focus more narrowly on the various statements Sessions made about Russia. First of all, on a couple of occasions, he emphasized the seriousness of the probe into whether or not they attempted to influence the election. But then, there was this exchange:

King: “Do you think Russians interfered with 2016 election?”
    Sessions: “Appears so.”
King: “But you never asked about it?”
    Sessions: “No.”

    — Roger Simon (@politicoroger) June 13, 2017

Sessions went farther than that and said that during his tenure as attorney general he has never been briefed on Russia’s interference in our election.

The attorney general of the United States just said he’s never been briefed on Russian interference in the 2016 election

Quick Takes: AG Sessions Was Nervous and Defensive
A roundup of news that caught my eye today.

    * Attorney General Jeff Sessions testified at the Senate Intelligence Committee this afternoon. His demeanor was in sharp contrast to former FBI Director Comey’s recent appearance. The latter was calm, confident and very well-prepared while the Attorney General seemed nervous and defensive. Here’s a quick summary from Josh Marshall:

Big picture: Sessions refused to answer the biggest questions; he was almost certainly not telling the truth about what triggered his refusal. Most of the rest was atmospherics.

There was an exchange between LarryO and Heidelman(sp?) about the general cluelessness by Team Trump about Bobby Three Sticks (that nickname cracks me up). How he just doesn’t get that threatening him isn’t the way to go. The only one who probably has a clue is Priebus, but we know he’s not in the inner circle. It was in the last segment of LarryO’s show last night.

      Don’t remotely believe this.

The shooter was taken alive….we know what color he is…right?

    • Senator Barton was describing the shooter, and you could see it pained him to say the shooter was white. Barton described everything about him but his race. He called him “Anglo”.

Sesion, #45 & RUSSIA, GOP destroying our healthcare, our lively hoods. . Let’s not let the shooting distract.
