      “I find Alan Dershowitz’s comments about a grand jury very offensive,” Painter remarked. “Black people could be just as fair to Donald Trump as white people. This race-baiting something unacceptable. I’m a graduate of the university that employs him and for him to be shooting his mouth off talking about the racial makeup of a grand jury it’s offensive. It’s offensive to our system of democracy and the United States.”

      “Of course he doesn’t like grand juries because he spent most of his life defending very rich people who were very guilty going back to the von Bulow trial,” Painter raged. “He doesn’t like grand juries, but doesn’t need to bring race into it. This race-baiting is something that is unacceptable and we should not be encouraging that and President Trump has been doing a lot of it, as are people working for him. I’m shocked to see a prominent law professor engage in the race-baiting.”

    Hours after news broke that Robert Mueller, the special counsel in the Russia probe, has impanelled a grand jury as part of his investigation, President Trump declared at a rally in West Virginia that “the Russia story is a total fabrication. It’s just an excuse for the greatest loss in the history of American politics.”

    Trump’s comments, which were meant to denigrate and perhaps thwart the Mueller probe, were undermined by the fact that the grand jury has been at work for several weeks in the District of Columbia.

    Grand juries don’t investigate hoaxes, and there are rules against using them for anything resembling a political witch hunt. As several former federal prosecutors told me, the grand jury is significant because it means that Mueller is in the midst of a ‘predicated’ criminal investigation. That is, he has reached the point where he has evidence of criminal conduct.

      “… Trump personally met with a U.S. attorney nominee prior to her selection in June in an unusual move that raised red flags for former officials, CNN reported Thursday.

      A number of former Justice Department and White House sources told CNN the rare meeting is at odds with the custom of guarding U.S. attorneys from political influence, especially considering that she would be the leading the largest federal prosecutor’s office in the country.

      Jessie Liu, the current deputy general counsel for the Treasury Department and Trump’s pick for U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, said in her responses to the Senate Judiciary Committee that she met with Trump as part of the interview process.

      “It’s wrong, and the reason it’s wrong is that it serves to undermine the rule of law,” former U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Alabama Joyce Vance told CNN. “This goes to the independence of the Justice Department” and “any effort by any president to diminish that is problematic.”

      One former White House counsel echoed the concerns, saying that because it would be virtually impossible for a president to meet with all 93 presidentially appointed U.S. attorneys prior to nomination, “it is fair to ask why President Trump chose to meet only with the candidate for the US attorney in Washington, DC.”

    Flee the swamp!

    President Trump — who long railed against elected officials taking vacation — is going on vacation for 17 days starting Friday.

    The commander-in-chief, who as a candidate said he’d be too busy to golf if elected, will spend the nearly three weeks at his Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, N.J.

    But it might be something of a forced trip.

    The grand jury is in for the Trump-Russia probe.

    Special Counsel Robert Mueller has impaneled a grand jury for his investigation into the Trump campaign’s potential Russia ties, according to a report Thursday.

    Mueller’s move indicates his investigation has already taken major steps forward, and that he’s preparing to ramp up the investigative work for a long time coming.

    The grand jury in Washington, D.C. started its work several weeks ago and it is likely to continue for months, The Wall Street Journal reported.

    Grand juries have the power to subpoena documents, get testimonies under oath and seek indictments if there is evidence of a crime. Mueller’s panel shows that he’s anticipating the clout of his probe to intensify.

    Since grand juries work in secret, little else is known about this latest twist in the inquiry.

    Trump’s special counsel Ty Cobb told the Journal he wasn’t even aware of the grand jury.
