French photographer Albert Kahn took this colorized photo in 1913. This woman had been condemned to slow and painful starvation in the middle of the desert. If those punished this way survive 2-3 months with minimal food and water, they are set free.
In the 1940s and ’50s, over 216 nuclear tests were performed around the Bikini Atoll area. The one pictured here caused massive damage to the atoll and released contamination into the ocean.

Pulitzer Prize winning photojournalist Nick Ut, best known for his 1972 Vietnam War photograph known as “Napalm Girl” Phan Thị Kim Phúc OOnt, referenced informally as the Napalm girl, is a Vietnamese-Canadian best known as the nine-year-old child depicted in the Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph taken during the Vietnam War on June 8, 1972.
In 1981, a man named John Hinckley, Jr. shot President Ronald Reagan in the midsection and Press Secretary James Brady in the head. Both men survived, though Brady was permanently disabled. Hinckley said he’d done it to impress actress Jodie Foster, with whom he was obsessed. He was found not guilty by reason of insanity.

Diego is crying at the funeral of his mentor and teacher, Evandro João da Silva, who was killed in an assault in October of 2009 in Rio De Janerio. Diego’s teacher had helped him escape poverty and violence through his kindness and their shared love of music. Diego died in March of 2010 from complications of leukemia.

I remember a lot of these. The one of the woman in the starvation box is so horrific. And the vulture waiting to eat the child is just incomprehensible. What an unjust world this has been, and still is.
Some of these images are the saddest thing ever. It just crushes the heart.
