White supremacists vicious assault on Deandre Harris in Charlottesville

A savage attack on a counter-protester during Saturday’s violent “Unite the Right” rally in Virginia evoked memories of the ugliest days of the civil rights movement, an original Freedom Rider said Monday.

Among the victims of the Charlottesville violence was a local resident who joined his friends to demonstrate against the organizers of the white nationalist event in the city’s Emancipation Park.

Deandre Harris, 20, was attacked in a parking lot by a group of white supremacists who kicked him, punched him and pummeled him with metal poles.

On August 12th, 2017 there was a “Unite the Right” march of white nationalist and other right-wing groups (KKK, Neo-nazis, and white supremacists) that took place in Charlottesville, Virginia. These individuals were protesting against the removal of local confederate monuments, primarily the Robert E. Lee Statue in Emancipation Park. I arrived at Emancipation Park around 11 AM as a counter-protester to voice my opinion on racial tensions and to literally stand up for what I believe in. I was only there for a few minutes before I was hit with water bottles, maced with pepper spray, and had derogoratoy slurs hurled at me. Just forty-five minutes in to the rally our Gov. Terry McAuliffe declared a state of emergency to aid state response to violence. About fifteen minutes or so after that I was brutally attacked by white supremacists in the parking garage right beside the Charlottesville Police Station. I was chased and beat with metal poles. I was knocked unconscious repeatedly. Every time I went to stand up I was knocked back down.

If it was not for my friends that I came with I would have been beaten to a pulp. No law enforcement stepped in to help me. Once I was dragged off to some near by steps I was taken to the designated area for injured protesters & counter-protesters. My injuries were too extensive to be treated at the scene so I was taken to the ER at Martha Jefferson Hospital. I was diagnosed with a concussion, an ulna fracture, and had to receive eight staples in my head. I also have a laceration across my right eyebrow, abrasions on my knees & elbows, and a chipped tooth. I’m so blessed to be alive to tell my story and to show the world that racism is very much still alive.

    MARIETTA, GA — A Marietta man who surrendered to authorities early Tuesday after being wanted in connection with the violence that took place in Charlottesville, Va., made his first court appearance, Patch has learned. Alex Michael Ramos is being held in the Monroe County Jail, Cobb officials said.

When we were finally allowed to leave, we could not go out the front door for fear that we would be assaulted. We were ushered out the side door and the back into alleys. This is America in 2017.

      If Trump’s words spoken under pressure meant anything then Bannon, Gorka, and Miller would have been fired yesterday. But they’re still around.

      Trump thinks he can say a few words that people are demanding to hear and then go back to what he was doing. He doesn’t give a damn about Charlottesville.

    Thanks for this post, SG2. I have been so distressed about this. The white supremacist terrorists had every intention of killing that young man, Deandre Harris. When I saw that picture a couple of days ago I immediately thought about the Freedom Riders and the kind of people who showed up in Anniston, Birmingham, and Montgomery with pipes and bats, ready to beat the hell out of the young freedom riders with the blessing of law enforcement.

    These terrorists are the same people, just a different generation. But this time some of them will pay a price even though they have friends in the White House.

        I can honestly say that I never knew anyone who participated in mob violence against black people back then. Certainly no one in my family or none of the relatives.

        But these people were mostly what you would think of as ordinary people. They were co-workers, neighbors, churchgoers…

        This is what people are capable of when there are no restraints and no expectation of consequences.

      In early 2009, then DHS secretary under President Obama, Janet Napolitano, had to issue an apology for a released DHS report warning about these alt-right folks…At the time it was Republican folks loudly outraged on behalf of their alt-right constituents aka the Tea Party…that they were actively cultivating and exploiting to harass and obstruct the historic presidency..

    This is one of our chances to get pictures and identify the nazis, bigots, alt right racists and supremacists. They need to be in some database because, who knows where these people will show up next? As a candidate for some high office, as a government clerk, as a business owner etc., As a person with some power over others or after committing some act of violence, you can see that they will deny that their bigotry, so catch them now before they learn to hide.
