Friday Open Thread | RNC Chair Reince Priebus was at Trump Tower when Trump team and Russia were plotting illegal RNC donations

PalmerReport

Today a major new bombshell arrived in an existing Trump-Russia storyline, and it’s placed one long-curious aspect of the story in suspicious new context. Months ago it was revealed that the Donald Trump campaign met with Russian government representatives at Trump Tower during the election to try to influence the outcome of the election. It was also documented that RNC Chair Reince Priebus was at Trump Tower at the time. Now it turns out the meeting involved at least the discussion of illegal Russian donations to the RNC.

This latest revelation comes from notes that Trump campaign chair Paul Manafort took on his phone during the Russia meeting. Those notes are now evidence, and they reveal that Manafort wrote “RNC” and “donations” next to each other, according to NBC News (link). This circles back to the question of what the hell Reince Priebus was doing in the building while this meeting was going on.

Reince Priebus is best known as Donald Trump’s embattled and ultimately displaced White House Chief of Staff. But during the course of the election he was the chairman of the Republican National Committee. As Palmer Report reported weeks ago (link), Priebus was spotted entering Trump Tower just before the Russia meeting took place. It’s still not confirmed whether or not Priebus was in the meeting. But now that we know the subject matter of the meeting included illegal Russian donations to the RNC, it casts Priebus’ presence in a whole new light.

Was Priebus actually in the meeting between the Trump team and the Russian government representatives? Did he arrive at the building to discuss the “RNC donations” proposal that the Kremlin apparently pitched to the Donald Trump campaign during that meeting? One way or the other, Reince Priebus is now front and center in the Trump-Russia scandal. And because he was the head of the Republican Party at the time, the entire party is suspect.

Black students declining at Chicago’s top public high schools and in CPS overall
    By Alden Loury @AldenLoury
    August 31, 2017

Not everyone is going back to school in Chicago, especially at the city’s elite public high schools

About 380,000 Chicago public school students will return to classes next week. They are likely to include a diminishing crop of African-American students, most notably at the city’s most prestigious public high schools, shows a Metropolitan Planning Council analysis of Chicago Public Schools data.

The number of African-American students in CPS has declined each year since at least 1998, the earliest year for which demographic data are available on the district’s website. In addition, black students have now fallen to the bottom among the largest four racial and ethnic groups at the city’s top five selective-enrollment high schools. And the disparity between the percentages of white and black CPS high school students attending those schools is at an all-time high.

    ……………….

Jones College Prep, Lane Tech, Northside College Prep, Payton College Prep, and Young Magnet high schools are routinely ranked by U.S. News & World Report, Niche and other websites as the top five public high schools in Chicago, among the top 10 in Illinois and among the top 200 in the nation. In its most recent rankings, Niche rated Payton and Northside as the top two public high schools in the U.S.

In 2016-2017, collectively, the share of black students at those schools dropped to its lowest point since 2000, the earliest year in which all five schools have been in operation. While African Americans comprised almost 40 percent of all high school students in CPS last school year, they made up just 13 percent collectively at those five high schools. It marked the first time that African Americans ranked last in combined enrollment at those schools among the city’s four largest racial and ethnic groups, which also include Asians, Latinos and whites.

As the share of black students at the top five CPS high schools has declined, the share of white students in those schools has increased. While white students were just 9 percent of all CPS high school students last year, they accounted for nearly 35 percent of students at the city’s top five public high schools—the highest share among all racial or ethnic groups, followed by Latinos at 33 percent and Asians at 14 percent.

White high school students in CPS are 13 times more likely than their black peers to attend one of the city’s elite public high schools—the widest disparity at any point since all five schools have been in operation. About 39 percent of all white high school students in CPS last year were enrolled in one of those top schools compared with just 3 percent of all black CPS high school students.

WH budget director boasts of tricking Trump into slashing disability benefits by calling it ‘welfare’

    Brad Reed
    01 Sep 2017 at 08:44 ET

President Donald Trump vowed throughout the 2016 presidential campaign that he would not cut Social Security or Medicare.

Despite this, however, the president’s proposed budget
featured a massive $70 billion cut in Social Security disability
benefits over the span of a decade.

    A Politico profile
of White House Budget Director Mick Mulvaney reveals exactly how this happened — essentially, Mulvaney tricked Trump into agreeing to disabilities benefits cuts by calling it a “welfare” program.

Earlier this year, Mulvaney tried to get Trump to agree to
cuts in Social Security and Medicare, but the president wouldn’t budge. Then he brought up disabilities benefits, which piqued Trump’s interest.

“Tell me about that,” Trump said.

    “It’s welfare,” Mulvaney said.

“OK, we can fix welfare,” Trump declared.

Politico notes that Mulvaney is proudly telling
this story about how he manipulated Trump into cutting benefits for 11 million disabled Americans on the record — and it’s an indication of the clout he has that he doesn’t fear telling anecdotes that show his boss to be woefully misinformed.

Ryan Asks Trump to Hold Off on Scrapping DACA
    September 1, 2017 at 12:56 pm EDT

Speaker Paul Ryan “gave a major boost to legislative efforts to preserve protections for young undocumented immigrants — and urged President Trump to not tear up the program,” CNN reports.

“The popular Obama administration program — which gives protections from deportation to undocumented immigrants that were brought to the US as children to work or study — has long been targeted by Republicans as an overreach of executive authority. Nevertheless, a number of moderate Republicans alongside Democrats support the program and have offered legislation that would make the protections permanent.”

Trump sets pay rate for federal workers
    08/31/17 06:31 PM EDT

President Trump sent a letter to Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) on Thursday announcing 2018 pay rates for civilian government workers.

In the letter, Trump cited his authority in times of “national emergency or serious economic conditions affecting the general welfare” to make adjustments to the 2018 pay schedule for federal employees.

If Trump had not acted, workers were scheduled for an across-the-board pay raise of 1.9 percent while those in expensive urban areas stood to get as high as a 26 percent raise, based on an old formula that presidents have routinely circumvented.

Trump will use his authority to lower across-the-board pay raises to 1.4 percent, with an average additional raise of 0.5 percent, depending on what city the worker lives in.

“We must maintain efforts to put our nation on a sustainable fiscal course,” Trump wrote.

      Excerpt from this link:
      http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/video-utah-nurse-arrested-not-letting-policeman-draw-blood-unconscious-car-crash-victim-1637575

A nurse at the University Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah has accused a police detective of assaulting and illegally arresting her after she followed a hospital policy that does not allow authorities to draw blood from unconscious patients.

The incident, which happened on 26 July, got recorded through the bodycam of detective Jeff Payne and the CCTV installed in the hospital.
In the video, Payne can be seen insisting the nurse – Alex Wubbels – to let him draw the blood sample from a patient who was also a victim in a car crash that led to a fatality in Cache County earlier in the day.

But, the nurse turned down the request stating hospital policies that bar anyone taking blood from an unconscious patient without his/her consent, unless there is a warrant allowing the draw or the patient is under arrest.

Payne, whose request did not get fulfilled, kept insisting and that led Wubbles to call several hospital officials, who repeated the same rule that she had already told him.

After a number of arguments and negotiations, Payne started to threaten Wubbles. The nurse can be seen in Payne’s bodycam footage screaming and being dragged into the police car, while he forcefully arrested her.

    Good Morning, Everyone.

Researcher of African American inventors, Henry E. Baker, was born this day, September 1, in 1857.
    http://pragmaticobotsunite.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/henry-baker.jpg
Graduating top of his class at Howard University, Baker became the third African American to attend the U.S. Naval Academy.

In 1877 he became a copyist at the U.S. Patent Office and in 1902 was promoted to Second Assistant Examiner there. While working at the Patent Office he encountered African American inventors and determined to uncover past and present records of all inventions by Black Americans. So much African American patent history might have been lost were it not for Henry E. Baker.

The story of his research and later publication is fascinating. You can read about it here:
