The Month From Hell Has Arrived

It’s happened. The Republicans’ month-from-hell has arrived. It’s the month I coined a meat-grinder.
And it’s going to get off to the slowest of starts owing to the long Labor Day weekend holiday. There will much work for responsible
government officials to do, and very little time for them to get it done.

Yet, the president is the farthest thing from focused. The Russia investigation is terrifying him. He wants to fire his Secretary of State and it looks like Rex Tillerson would welcome that outcome. He’s fuming at his National Economic Council Director Gary Cohn because Cohn essentially called him a racist in public, but he doesn’t feel like he can afford to fire him because he’s trying to pivot to a doomed tax reform effort. He’s chomping at the bit his chief of staff put on him to limit his access to fake news and crazy supporters and advisers.

He’s still obsessed with his media coverage and the camera angles and attendance he gets at his political rallies. He’s more energized by his efforts to settle scores with Republican senators who have crossed him than he is with attracting the support of Democratic senators he will soon need. He’s recently made open war on the Senate Majority Leader and the Speaker of the House, both of whom have been increasingly critical of his behavior and performance. Most of all, he misses the brief period during which the job of president was kind of fun:

As Trump lashes out like a badger in a burlap sack, his attacks are not suited to his challenges. He threatens to force a government shutdown if he doesn’t get funding for his border wall, but he has absolutely no plan for getting the votes he’d need from Democrats to get his money. He doesn’t know how he’s going to get the debt ceiling raised or whether or not he should attach it to disaster relief. He doesn’t even have a theory of where the votes will come from or what he might need to trade for those votes. He says that he still wants Obamacare repealed but doesn’t understand that the opportunity to do that will end the moment the Republicans pass a new budget aimed at enacting tax reform. He senses that he’s completely blocked legislatively and calls for an end of the Senate’s filibuster, not realizing that he doesn’t and never will have anywhere near the votes he needs to make that change.

This is how September is beginning for the president. Lord knows how it will end.

Just to remind you:
1. We have no budget
2. We need to do a debt ceiling
3. We need a HUGE bill for disaster relief for those who have been harmed by Harvey

And, while we need to worry about all of this, please don’t forget…they are always trying to destroy Obamacare. And, they have until September 30th to destroy Obamacare through the reconciliation. We’re on the clock..don’t take your mind off of that.

They are STILL TRYING TO DESTROY OBAMACARE.

    I am compelled to say this because today has been such a bad day for this country.

    Trump, who started his political “career” as the birther king, has been motivated primarily by his seething hatred for President Obama. We have seen his obsession, no need for me to elaborate.

    And we have come to understand that everything Trump does is an attempt to decimate another part of the Obama legacy, from repealing the ACA to rescinding executive orders. Trump thinks he can erase President Obama from history. And he pursues this single objective no matter how much it hurts the country.

    What Trump doesn’t understand, what he will never understand, and why he will fail is that President Obama’s legacy cannot be destroyed. President Obama’s legacy cannot be destroyed because we are his legacy.

    People are rising up every time Trump tries to destroy the Obama legacy, whether it is about civil rights or healthcare or immigration, because we aren’t going back. For eight years we had a real president, a visionary leader, and we aren’t going back. And that, my friends, is the Obama legacy.

    Perhaps the biggest fallacy in characterizing the type of person who
    supported and still supports Donald Trump—one that I’ve been guilty of believing and sharing myself—is that the type of person he appeals to lacks the sophistication to realize that his promises of returning long-dead American jobs in steel and coal and manufacturing aren’t just lies. They’re impossible. They are never, ever, ever coming back.

    Of course, we (and by “we” I mean “everyone apparently, except New York Times columnists”) have accepted that these people understood the latent racial dog whistling in Trump’s messaging. Making America great again is a succinct assurance that jobs and opportunities would be returned to the people who deserve them by white birthright. And while this race-based presumption of merit is abhorrent, it is understandable if they sincerely believe that the only way for them to do better is for usto do worse.

    But as the Trump administration prepares to phase out DACA—which protects at least 800,000 undocumented immigrants from deportation—please know that the people who support this terrible and evil act know that removing immigrants like those protected by DACA from America won’t resurrect those dead fucking jobs in those dead fucking cities. They know that the American manufacturing ship been sailed, and that Trump’s bitch ass is lying. Do not allow yourself to infantilize them or believe that there’s any nobility in their beliefs. Perhaps they’re ignorant about certain facts, but they understand the psychology of their president’s platform. They don’t give a damn about bettering their own
    fucking lives. They just want ours to suck, too.

    Fuck them all.

    I feel like we might have to leave this country. We can’t have peace and live. I get so discouraged sometimes. You fight every day and they keep piling on. Nothing changes. It makes you lose strength. God help us.

    Immigration can be a controversial topic. We all want safe, secure borders and a dynamic economy, and people of goodwill can have legitimate disagreements about how to fix our immigration system so that everybody plays by the rules.

    But that’s not what the action that the White House took today is about. This is about young people who grew up in America – kids who study in our schools, young adults who are starting careers, patriots who pledge allegiance to our flag. These Dreamers are Americans in their hearts, in their minds, in every single way but one: on paper. They were brought to this country by their parents, sometimes even as infants. They may not know a country besides ours. They may not even know a language besides English. They often have no idea they’re undocumented until they apply for a job, or college, or a driver’s license.

    Over the years, politicians of both parties have worked together to write legislation that would have told these young people – our young people – that if your parents brought you here as a child, if you’ve been here a certain number of years, and if you’re willing to go to college or serve in our military, then you’ll get a chance to stay and earn your citizenship. And for years while I was President, I asked Congress to send me such a bill.

    That bill never came. And because it made no sense to expel talented, driven, patriotic young people from the only country they know solely because of the actions of their parents, my administration acted to lift the shadow of deportation from these young people, so that they could continue to contribute to our communities and our country. We did so based on the well-established legal principle of prosecutorial discretion, deployed by Democratic and Republican presidents alike, because our immigration enforcement agencies have limited resources, and it makes sense to focus those resources on those who come illegally to this country to do us harm. Deportations of criminals went up. Some 800,000 young people stepped forward, met rigorous requirements, and went through background checks. And America grew stronger as a result.

    But today, that shadow has been cast over some of our best and brightest young people once again. To target these young people is wrong – because they have done nothing wrong. It is self-defeating – because they want to start new businesses, staff our labs, serve in our military, and otherwise contribute to the country we love. And it is cruel. What if our kid’s science teacher, or our friendly neighbor turns out to be a Dreamer? Where are we supposed to send her? To a country she doesn’t know or remember, with a language she may not even speak?

      Let’s be clear: the action taken today isn’t required legally. It’s a political decision, and a moral question. Whatever concerns or complaints Americans may have about immigration in general, we shouldn’t threaten the future of this group of young people who are here through no fault of their own, who pose no threat, who are not taking away anything from the rest of us. They are that pitcher on our kid’s softball team, that first responder who helps out his community after a disaster, that cadet in ROTC who wants nothing more than to wear the uniform of the country that gave him a chance. Kicking them out won’t lower the unemployment rate, or lighten anyone’s taxes, or raise anybody’s wages.

      It is precisely because this action is contrary to our spirit, and to common sense, that business leaders, faith leaders, economists, and Americans of all political stripes called on the administration not to do what it did today. And now that the White House has shifted its responsibility for these young people to Congress, it’s up to Members of Congress to protect these young people and our future. I’m heartened by those who’ve suggested that they should. And I join my voice with the majority of Americans who hope they step up and do it with a sense of moral urgency that matches the urgency these young people feel.

      Ultimately, this is about basic decency. This is about whether we are a people who kick hopeful young strivers out of America, or whether we treat them the way we’d want our own kids to be treated. It’s about who we are as a people – and who we want to be.
      What makes us American is not a question of what we look like, or where our names come from, or the way we pray. What makes us American is our fidelity to a set of ideals – that all of us are created equal; that all of us deserve the chance to make of our lives what we will; that all of us share an obligation to stand up, speak out, and secure our most cherished values for the next generation. That’s how America has traveled this far. That’s how, if we keep at it, we will ultimately reach that more perfect union.

    After equating neo-Nazis with anti-racist protesters and pardoning Joe Arpaio, we didn’t need any more proof of the malignant bigotry at the heart of President Trump’s agenda.

    But he’s provided it anyway, by ending the DACA program. This is one of the most senseless, heartless, inhumane acts of any president in recent memory.

    Many, perhaps most, of these young people know no other home. They’re Americans. Now, to appease his white nationalist supporters, he wants to throw them out of their country. Trump’s cruelty knows no bounds.
