Trump bucks GOP leadership, backs Democratic deal on debt ceiling, funding government

(CNN)President Donald Trump bucked his own party Wednesday and sided with Democrats to support a deal that would ensure passage of disaster relief funding as well as raising the debt ceiling and continuing to fund the government into December.

In a rebuke to Republican leaders, Trump backed Democrats’ plan to support a deal that would fund Hurricane Harvey aid but only raise the debt ceiling for three months. Those two items would also be tied to a measure to keep the government open through the end of December, setting up a hugely complicated year end crush of must-pass items.

Ignoring the advice of Republican congressional leadership and that of his own treasury secretary, Trump said he wanted a solution and supported the Democratic plan, according to a source briefed on a meeting that Trump held with congressional leaders Wednesday.

This is big because we won’t be defaulting on the debt ceiling. Even though it’s kicking the can down the road, it does get money to those that need it.

For all his famed negotiating skills, Trump emerged from the meeting having handed Democrats a legislative triumph. But according to sources close to Trump, the president was more than willing to cut the deal because he has grown tired, if not resentful, of Republican leaders on Capitol Hill.

Multiple West Wing sources told The Daily Beast how the president was looking to strike a quick and easy deal—and that his speed reaching this specific arrangement was in part ensured by his resentment towards Republican leaders, who Trump views as hostile, insufficiently loyal, and impotent. It was well-known within the White House that President Trump, going into the meeting, was “not looking to do [Ryan and McConnell] any favors,” as one White House official put it.

Simply put, the president made a “deliberate decision not to care about Ryan’s feelings” and did what he wanted, another White House adviser said.

    Naturally, all things considered, it sounds like Maria Sharapova should be the single-whitest woman on earth. Admittedly, she makes a compelling case. She checks every box on the Darth Becky sign-in sheet. Faux victimhood? Check! Shameless attempts to elicit sympathy at the expense of people of color? Check! Uninvestigated and unacknowledged privilege? Check! Probable midnight DMs from Jason Whitlock? Check! She makes a quite valid case for Peak Becky.

    Unfortunately, the Whitest Woman on Earth title is already held by Taylor Swift. Poor Maria can’t even win a battle of whiteness.

    OFF THE COAST OF AFRICA.

    The storms are created thousands of miles away and travel – literally – ACROSS THE OCEAN.

    The Washington Post did an extraordinary story on a run-down building complex in Houston that floods regularly, is filled with mould, and whose residents have to pay rent whether they’re knee-deep in water or not. They didn’t have the luxury of evacuating during Harvey, and instead carried sodden mattresses to the top floors of the building: “There were few around here who stockpiled food and drinking water to wait out the storm,” the Post story said, “because stockpiling requires extra cash, and extra cash is not a luxury they have.”

    Democrat to stay on Trump voter panel despite calls to leave

    New Hampshire’s secretary of state said today he will remain on an
    advisory commission to President Donald Trump though he disagrees with voter fraud allegations made by the panel’s vice chairman about his state.

    All four members of New Hampshire’s congressional delegation called on fellow Democrat and Secretary of State Bill Gardner to step down from the Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity in response to a Breitbart column by Republican Kris Kobach published Thursday.

    “Secretary Gardner’s association with this partisan commission risks tarnishing his long legacy of fighting for the New Hampshire Primary and promoting voter participation, and it would be in keeping with his distinguished record to immediately relinquish any role with this commission,” Hassan and Sen. Jeanne Shaheen said in a statement.

    Gardner, the nation’s longest-serving secretary of state, countered
    by questioning whether the senators quit committees they’re assigned to in Congress because they disagree with other members.

    “Are they going to refuse to participate in anything? Don’t they try
    to deal with it? Don’t they try to have a dialogue,” he said.

    Gardner said he doesn’t condone Kobach’s claims but will remain on the commission because it’s important to figure out why Americans are losing trust in the election process. Nothing less than the fate of American democracy is at stake, he said.

    “Democracies go away when people no longer trust the very basic part of democracy, which is the ability to cast a vote for the people you want to represent you,” he said. “If they lose faith in that process, it goes away. That’s how democracies die.”

    I’ve been seething all day about the response to Hillary’s book, and I feel like I’ve finally channeled it into a coherent thread.

    2/ Every last thing we’re experiencing now was predicted by Hillary during the campaign. And like Cassandra, we refused to believe her.

    3/ I shouldn’t use the word “we” because I was a member of her coalition. I believed her and I believed in her.

    4/ She represented her coalition ably, if not perfectly. She talked about issues that mattered to us. She made sure to express empathy.

    5/ For that, she was heckled, harassed, attacked, dismissed, ignored and mocked by the very people who were supposed to inform us.

    6/ And every time someone wrote about how unlikeable she was, or how she didn’t talk about what really mattered, or how it’s her fault…

    7/ They were really saying it about our coalition. *We* were unlikeable. *We* didn’t really matter. It’s *our* fault that Trump won

    8/ This backlash is really about the idea that neither Hillary as a person nor the coalition she represented has any right to public life.

    9/ She was supposed to stan for white supremacy and patriarchy. She was supposed to put the priorities of white rural voters above all.

    10/ She was supposed to back down when shouted at. She was supposed to mold herself into something likeable.

    11/ It goes without saying that white men determine what is likeable. They say it’s voters, but they mean white male voters.

    12/ And we are seeing the backlash of not placating those who want our silence, our submission, our obeisance in their presence.

    13/ Y’all get distracted when a GOP presidential candidate retweets white supremacists, but you can find all the time to harass Hillary.

    16/ And us, those who shared in her warnings and now feel the brunt of the brutality, we’re told that we had our shot and we wasted it.

    18/ But POC, women, urban voters who are responsible for 2/3 of the American economy? We should shut up and go home. No one wants us here.

    19/ It’s very clear that the storytellers of this age are interested in protecting the narrative of white-dominated Americana.

    Days before they meet in New Hampshire, members of the White House’s Election Integrity Commission have seized on a report about same-day registration to allege that massive fraud might have swung the state’s 2016 vote. Both voters and election experts say the allegation — accusing thousands of voters of criminal activity simply for living in New Hampshire but holding out-of-state driver’s licenses — are baseless.

    The accusation arose Thursday morning, when Shawn Jasper, the speaker of New Hampshire’s Republican-run House of Representatives, released data on same-day registrants that he’d obtained from the secretary of state’s office. In November 2016, 6,540 voters had registered to vote on Election Day. As of Aug. 30, just 1,014 of those voters had obtained a New Hampshire drivers license. A few hundred voters did not obtain state licenses but had registered cars in the state.

    That was enough for Jasper to allege thousands of fraudulent votes — and for Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, the vice chairman of the commission, to flatly allege that fraudulent voters might have stolen the state’s four electoral votes and a U.S. Senate seat away from Republicans.

    “If 59.2 percent or more of them went for (Democratic Sen. Maggie) Hassan, then the election was stolen through voter fraud,” Kobach wrote in a column for Breitbart. “That’s likely, since the surrounding states are Democrat (sic) strongholds.”
