Saturday Open Thread | Trump calls NFL Players Who Kneel a “Son of a Bitch”

President Trump told a crowd at a rally for Alabama Senate candidate Luther Strange (R) on Friday night that they should “pick up and leave” NFL games if they see players kneeling during the national anthem.

“When people like yourselves turn on television and you see those people taking the knee when they are playing our great national anthem – the only thing you could do better is if you see it, even if it’s one player, leave the stadium,” Trump suggested. “I guarantee things will stop.”

“Luther and I and everyone in this arena tonight are unified by the same great American values. We’re proud of our country. We respect our flag,” he continued.

“Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, ‘Get that son of a b—- off the field right now,'” he continued, adding, “‘He is fired.'”

Trump has previously blasted NFL player Colin Kaepernick, who gained notoriety after he kneeled during the national anthem to protest the treatment of people of color in the U.S.

The president slammed Kaepernick earlier this year, saying he is a free agent because of his refusal to stand during the national anthem.

    @jonas:
that Obamacare *was* the Republican healthcare plan

I say this all the time but I fundamentally disagree with this.
Obamacare had a huge liberal slice- Medicaid. Republicans never would have expanded a single-payer program to poor and working class.

It bothers me that Lefties ignore it- I think it’s elitist. Medicaid
is the plan for working poor. To ignore a huge expansion there is to
ignore them and they are supposedly the reason Lefties exist. The reason Democrats didn’t benefit politically from it was they don’t vote in numbers – they don’t punch their weight. 50% of the births in this county last year were Medicaid. Half.

Putting it in block grants and shoving the problems off on the
states won’t work either. Conservatives run plenty of states, and have for the last 30 years. Show me the GOP state with a great health care solution. No one was stopping them from solving this at the state level.Mitch Daniels got the furthest with it in Indiana and no one talks about it because it failed.

If conservatives could actually do this – cost, quality, access- we’d
see it in one of the states they run. Collins wants the federal
Medicaid funding for Maine because they can’t.

I love how they’ve twisted “federalism” into “no state can have a better health care system than Mississippi or that’s unfair”.

It’s an absolute perversion of “federalism”. It’s anti-competitive

Unfortunately i see nothing but a forced exodus from the island. Then the wealthy friends of friends of the govt will swoop in and privatize everything. I fear the island will not come back from this. Desperation will take over and people will have no choice but to abandon their former lives and go to the willing and accepting relatives on the mainland. How many of those do u think will be able to go back to areas that will now undoubtedly be unattainable or unaffordable to them. This is devastating

How to Find a Shelter in Puerto Rico, and How to Get in Touch With Family Members After Hurricane Maria
    By Sean Breslin
    Sep 23 2017 08:00 AM EDT
    weather.com

Thousands have been evacuated from near the 90-year-old Guajataca Dam in Puerto Rico in the wake of Hurricane Maria’s destruction.

Hurricane Maria severed communication lines across the Caribbean, leaving millions with nowhere to go and no instructions for what to do next.

This is certainly the case in Puerto Rico, where 100 percent of the island was left powerless and residents have struggled to communicate with family members on the United States mainland and elsewhere. Even worse, some might not know where to go for safety in the wake of the storm.

According to the Associated Press, 1,360 of the island’s 1,600 cellphone towers were downed by Hurricane Maria and 85 percent of above-ground and underground phone and internet cables were knocked out, so making contact with family and friends on the island is limited.

‘Thousands of people could die’: 70,000 in Puerto Rico urged to evacuate with dam in ‘imminent’ danger
By Samantha Schmidt, Katie Zezima, Sandhya Somashekhar and Daniel Cassady September 22 at 10:37 PM

SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO — Tens of thousands of residents in northwestern Puerto Rico were ordered to evacuate Friday amid fears that a dam holding back a large inland lake was in imminent danger of failing because of damage from Hurricane Maria’s floodwaters.

Officials worried that as many as 70,000 people could be in the path of a massive amount of rushing water in the event the Guajataca Dam releases into the Guajataca River, which flows north through low-lying coastal communities and empties into the ocean.

Abner Gomez, executive director of Puerto Rico’s emergency management agency, said in an interview late Friday night that the dam’s gates suffered mechanical damage during the storm, making it impossible for them to open and let out normal water currents. Officials worry that could cause the dam to spill over.

The urgent situation Friday came more than 48 hours after Hurricane Maria slammed into Puerto Rico’s southeastern coast as the most powerful storm to strike the island in more than 80 years. It was a reminder that Maria’s impact on Puerto Rico is far from over; officials still have little sense of the scope of the damage the island sustained as a communications and power blackout continued to affect nearly everyone in the U.S. territory.

Though damage assessments have been nearly impossible, early reports reveal an island ravaged by Maria’s high winds and torrential rains, with roofs peeled open like tin cans, neighborhoods waterlogged, and trees that were lush just days ago now completely stripped bare of leaves. The hurricane plowed through the entire 100-mile island, with the eye tracking diagonally from the southeast to the northwest.

The lack of communications has isolated rural areas of the island. Just 15 percent of the island’s communication towers are working, and some of the island’s transmission towers have collapsed. Up to 85 percent of its fiber cables are damaged.

Power remains completely out on the island, and just 25 percent of it has water service.

Shock has given way to frayed nerves as officials warned that it could be months before power is restored to some areas, and there is no indication of when communications infrastructure will be fixed. In the capital, streets were choked with traffic as people tried to find loved ones and spent hours waiting in line for gas.

Puerto Rico, with 3.5 million U.S. citizens, also is facing a crisis because of its geography: It is an island dependent on air and sea for supplies and volunteers. The immediate response that occurred after Hurricane Harvey in Houston, where volunteers from Louisiana headed in during the storm, or during Hurricane Irma in Florida, where utility trucks were pre-positioned to turn on power, is impossible here.

Excerpt from article at this link:
    http://www.msn.com/en-us/weather/topstories/what-harvey-revealed-about-climate-change-in-the-south/ar-AAsmmuM?li=BBnb7Kz&ocid=mailsignout

But geographic hazards are only part of what makes the South particularly at risk to climate change, Hayhoe says. There’s also the sheer number of people affected, and how vulnerable they are.

Despite the hazards, states like Texas have taken few steps to reduce risk. Although Texas leads the U.S. in terms of dollars paid for flood claims, it ranks among the worst in flood-control spending and doesn’t require its communities to enroll in FEMA’s National Flood Insurance Program. Suburban sprawl has led to new houses and developments being built on flood plains, and complicated emergency response. And migration to Texas and the South generally have only increased the region’s exposure, particularly for those pushed to the low-lying and less desirable areas.

“These weather and climate extremes broaden the gaps between haves and have-nots. If you have insurance versus if you don’t, if you can evacuate or you can’t,” Hayhoe says. “There’s a socioeconomic component to individual vulnerability.”

    Also this:

Two Southern coastal cities in Hurricane Irma’s path, Miami and Charleston, South Carolina, have taken steps to address rising sea levels. Miami is raising its streets and installing water pumps, and Charleston has spent or set aside at least $238 million on drainage projects aimed at reducing flooding.
