Here’s the thing. There are GOP congressmen in the states that they want to punish. If they vote for this, they are literally signing their career death warrant. Republicans squeal about taxes. Putting their fingerprints on something that cannot be hidden, and that the voters can directly attach to them IS career suicide.
I know these areas in my state. These are people who are Republicans because ‘ they keep my taxes low’.
That’s the first thing out their mouths.
Something that directly hits their bottom line – they are proud members of the IGMFY crowd….
The folks that I’m talking about aren’t the Baby Jesus crowd. They moved to these areas for quality of life. And especially schools. That’s why it has been hard for the charter school scammers to move into the suburbs. How you gonna sell that scam to people who specifically moved there FOR the public schools? The attack on the taxes isn’t just taxes; they will see it-and correctly so- as an attack on ‘their way of life’. ALL made possible by the taxes. These taxes are their bottom line. Taking away that deduction is HUGE. HUGE.
The GOP controls all levers of government. There’s nobody to hide behind. They didn’t get TRUMPCARE, so they have to do their sociopathy out in the open.
These are the people who have accountants. Or know accountants. You don’t think that the whispering has already started about what the lack of state and local tax deductions will do their bottom line?
And, the only thing that they can explain is that the Koch Brothers will get a tax cut and somehow it will get back to them – which they know is bullshyt.
Good luck to the GOP reps thinking that they can sell that..
The path is direct now. They have nobody to hide behind.
I looked it up: Between CT, NY, NJ, CA, MA, IL and PA, there are over 40 GOP Reps. All being asked to commit Career Suicide. That’s more than enough to take back the House.
These tax cuts are about decimating the American Social Safety Net. Repealing the New Deal. Ridding us of the 20th Century.
You see now that, when people bring up the huge deficits that these tax cuts will cause, they don’t really care about the deficit. They spent 8 years howling about it when the Black Man was President. But, now, deficits don’t really matter.
Once they get those tax cuts past, then they’ll begin whining about the deficit, and how we have to make up that by cutting social programs – never defense, but Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security. It would fiscally irresponsible not to deal with the deficit…but AFTER the giveaway to the rich and corporations.
Make no mistake – we have to fight for the 20th Century.

Republicans want to pass a large tax cut for high-income households. We know that because the House GOP’s tax reform blueprint features large tax cuts for high-income households, all the various iterations of Donald Trump’s campaign tax plans featured large tax cuts for high-income households, and all throughout Barack Obama’s first term, Republicans fought relentlessly to prevent the expiration of George W. Bush’s temporary tax cuts for high-income households.
The big problem with this agenda is that it’s hideously unpopular.
According to a Washington Post/ABC News poll released on September 22, for example, conservative Republicans oppose cutting taxes on higher-income people by a 42-50 margin. That’s not the overall public — that’s conservative Republicans. Naturally, Democrats are even less supportive, opposing such tax cuts by a staggering 33-62 margin. White men without a college degree — Trump’s demographic base — oppose a tax cut for the rich by a 37-60 margin, with women, nonwhite people, and college graduates all even more opposed. Rural voters oppose cutting taxes for the rich by a 36-60 margin, and suburban and urban voters are even more opposed.
No major group of Americans except Republican Party donors and elected officials wants this policy. But Republicans are trying to pass it. So the plan is to sell it by not talking about it at all.

Americans overwhelmingly want large businesses to pay more taxes rather than less. And though opinion is less unified on the question of taxing high-income households, there is still far more support for higher taxes rather than lower. A new poll from the Pew Center shows just 24 percent of Americans favor tax cuts for either large businesses or affluent families. Not even a majority self-identified Republicans like the idea of tax cuts for these groups.

By contrast, the tax breaks for rich people and big businesses are quite specific:Households in the top income tax bracket (i.e., individuals making more than $418,000 or married couples earning more than $470,000) will definitely get their marginal tax rate cut from 39.6 percent to 35 percent.
Businesses that pay corporate income tax will see their profits taxed at a rate of 20 percent rather than 35 percent.
Partnerships and other businesses that don’t pay corporate income tax will see their top tax rate cut to 25 percent. This does nothing to help the majority of small business owners whose annual profits are less than $150,000 a year and are already paying at 25 percent. But bigger, more lucrative partnerships are getting a tax cut.Best of all, big multinational corporations who book profits overseas will no longer owe any American corporate income tax whatsoever. Giant, highly profitable, and already cash-rich companies like Apple, Google, Facebook, and Microsoft will be, by far, the biggest winners here.
These specific, highly detailed tax cuts for big businesses, rich families, and owners of the bulk of the shares of big businesses are the fixed points around which everything else in the GOP’s vague tax plan is going to have to revolve. But since there is next to no public support for these ideas, the sales job is going to have to end up focusing on other things.

President Donald Trump has personally interviewed
at least two potential candidates for U.S. attorney positions in New
York, according to two sources familiar with the matter — a move that critics say raises questions about whether they can be sufficiently independent from the president.
Trump has interviewed Geoffrey Berman, who is currently at the law
firm Greenberg Traurig for the job of U.S. attorney for the Southern
District of New York, and Ed McNally of the firm Kasowitz Benson Torres for the Eastern District post, according to the sources.
It was unclear when the discussions took place. Trump has not
announced nominees for those positions. Neither Berman nor McNally responded to calls or emails requesting comment…
The Southern District of New York is an especially notable
position since it has jurisdiction over Trump Tower. Preet Bharara, the former U.S. attorney there, has asserted he was conducting an
investigation into the Trump administration when Trump fired him along with all other U.S. attorneys — as is standard when an administration switches — earlier this year.
It is rare for a president to interview candidates for the 93 U.S.
attorney jobs. Former President Barack Obama never interviewed a U.S. attorney candidate during his two terms, according to Matthew Miller, who served as Justice Department spokesman under the Obama administration…

bring indictments over the ongoing special counsel investigation into

DNC Chair Tom Perez Gives Up on Unity, Rewards Loyalists

This week in Las Vegas, the DNC Unity Commission is meeting in conjunction with a DNC meeting. DNC Chair Tom Perez will formally announce his appointments and nominations to DNC positions, a list of which was leaked. The shake-up has already drawn criticisms from progressives, as four prominent supporters of Congressman Keith Ellison (D-MN), the progressive who ran against Perez in the February 2017 DNC chair election, were removed.
The first trans-person elected to the DNC, Barbs Siperstein, was removed, along with Ellison’s former secretary, Alice Germond, and New Hampshire Democratic Party Chair Ray Buckley. Our Revolution Board Member James Zogby was demoted from his Executive Committee seat to an at-large nomination. “I’m concerned about the optics, and I’m concerned about the impact,” Zogby told NBC News of the changes. “I want to heal the wound of 2016.”
Supporters of Ellison and Sen. Bernie Sanders are drastically underrepresented in Perez’s selections, and the nominations are weighted toward loyalists to Perez and Hillary Clinton. Former DNC Interim Chair Donna Brazile was nominated for an at-large position and appointed to the Rules and Bylaws Committee—a divisive pick given Brazile’s record of violating the DNC Charter during the 2016 primaries at the benefit of Hillary Clinton. CNN severed ties with Brazile after leaked emails revealed she tipped off the Clinton campaign to difficult questions preceding a CNN debate and town hall. No Sanders supporters were appointed to the rules and bylaws committee.
Several former and current lobbyists received DNC appointments and nominations, outnumbering those given to Sanders supporters. Jeff Berman, a former lobbyist for the private prison company GEO Group and the Keystone XL pipeline, received an appointment as a DNC at-large member. Jaime Harrison, a former coal lobbyist who ran for DNC chair and endorsed Perez after dropping out, was nominated for an Executive Committee at-large member position. Joanne Dowdell, a senior executive in the lobbying division for Fox News’ parent corporation, News Corp, was nominated to be an at-large member and appointed to the Resolutions Committee. Registered lobbyists Calla and Roxanne Brown were nominated to be at-large members. Clinton fundraiser and registered lobbyist Tonio Burgos was appointed to the DNC Finance Committee. Minyon Moore and Maria Cardona, senior officials at the lobbying firm Dewey Square, received an Executive Committee at-large and DNC at-large member nomination. Daniel Halpern was chosen to serve as co-chair of the DNC Finance Committee. As chairman of the Georgia Restaurant Association, Halpern played an active role in shutting down a bill that would have increased Georgia’s state minimum wage.

Breaking: ND Prosecutor Seeks “Riot” Charges Against Amy Goodman For Reporting On Pipeline Protest

Bismarck, North Dakota–October 15, 2016 — A North Dakota state prosecutor has sought to charge award-winning journalist Amy Goodman with participating in a “riot” for filming an attack on Native American-led anti-pipeline protesters. The new charge comes after the prosecutor dropped criminal trespassing charges.
State’s Attorney Ladd R. Erickson filed the new charges on Friday before District Judge John Grinsteiner who will decide on Monday (October 17) whether probable cause exists for the riot charge.
Goodman has travelled to North Dakota to face the charges and will appear at Morton County court on Monday at 1:30 p.m. local time (CDT) if the charges are approved.
“I came back to North Dakota to fight a trespass charge. They saw that they could never make that charge stick, so now they want to charge me with rioting,” said Goodman. “I wasn’t trespassing, I wasn’t engaging in a riot, I was doing my job as a journalist by covering a violent attack on Native American protesters.”

Trump Understands Absolutely Nothing

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has scheduled a big vote-a-rama today that will culminate with a roll call on a budget resolution. It’s not entirely clear that the vote will succeed, but it’s beginning to look that way now that they’ve secured the support of John McCain. Still, even the president isn’t overly confident.
One sign that they don’t have any margin for error is that Sen. Thad Cochran of Mississippi came north to be present for the vote, even though he clearly should be in his bed recovering from a nasty urological infection. He was disoriented in the Capitol yesterday and needed a staff member to show him the way to the Senate chamber. It looks likely that Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky will vote against the resolution, and the maximum number of votes the Republicans can lose is two. As of now, it only looks like they will lose one vote, assuming Cochran can remain conscious throughout the vote-a-rama and cast his vote at the end.
Two days ago, I wrote that the Senate Republicans, for their own good, should not approve this budget resolution, because it will set them on a disastrous course. It almost appears that the president agrees with me, but the truth is that he has absolutely no idea what is going on.
I’ll say it again – I believe everything in the dossier is true.

Do you remember when Donald Trump accused his predecessor of wiretapping him? He also accused Obama’s national security advisor, Susan Rice, of illegally unmasking the names of Trump campaign staff in intelligence reports. Both claims were proven false. Today, he did it again.
Since it was written in the form of a question, the president might claim plausible deniability that he just accused the FBI of paying for the Steele dossier. But his inference is reprehensible. He even suggests that the FBI might have colluded with the Russians (and Democrats) to produce the dossier.
There are signs that all of this is a planned strategy to create a distraction for the president. First of all, while we don’t know the names of particular individuals or groups that were involved, it has been widely reported that Fusion GPS (the firm that employed Christopher Steele) was initially hired by “Never Trump” Republicans during the 2016 primary. Once Trump won the nomination, Democratic donors funded the continuing efforts. There’s no story there.

In January 2016, Donald Trump held a fundraiser in Iowa for veterans’ charities, and at the end of the event, the Republican made a bold boast: he’d raised $6 million for vets, and he’d contributed $1 million out of his own pocket.
A few months later, the public learned that neither of Trump’s claims were true: he’d exaggerated the total amount of donations, and the money Trump vowed to contribute from his personal finances hadn’t been sent. The then-candidate scrambled to send the money only after journalists began asking about his broken promise.
Something eerily similar happened yesterday.
We talked briefly about the Washington Post’s reporting on Chris Baldridge, whose son, Army Cpl. Dillon Baldridge, was killed in Afghanistan. The president called the father directly and said something unexpected.
A White House spokesperson insisted yesterday that a check “has been sent,” and described the line of inquiry as “disgusting.” But that led to an obvious question: did Trump send the money or not?
As it turns out, the White House did send the check – yesterday. In other words, Trump kept his promise months after the fact, but only when confronted with questions, just like when he lied last year about the money he’d donated to veterans’ charities.

Republican policymakers are confronting all kinds of challenges while trying to advance some kind of tax reform package, and near the top is a political problem: Americans don’t want to see the wealthy get another giant tax break, and that appears to be the centerpiece of the GOP plan.
For the most part, Donald Trump and his allies have largely dealt with this dilemma by lying – the president has repeatedly said working-class Americans would be the main beneficiaries, which is absurdly untrue – but Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin made a very different case to Politico this week. As Mnuchin sees it, Republicans are giving the rich a big tax cut, but only because it’s too darn difficult not to.

Republicans, as Steve Mnuchin apparently conceded, aren’t doing that at all. Indeed, not only are they pushing an across-the-board tax cut that necessarily helps those at the top, they’re adding insult to injury by adding additional tax breaks – such as cutting the estate tax – that exclusively benefit the wealthiest of the wealthy.
This is the result of deliberate policymaking. Mnuchin presented these results this week as some kind of arithmetical necessity, but that’s ridiculous. Republicans have made a choice to help the wealthy, and that choice is reflected in their proposal.

Robert Mercer may be the first person I’ve heard argue that all the depredations that blacks suffered under the Jim Crow regime were “not important.” His reasoning seems to be that blacks were “doing fine” under that regime when compared to what came after the major civil rights legislation of the 1960’s.
Even if you could find some metrics to support this argument, it’s unusual to say that the Civil Rights Act was to blame.
But this is allegedly how Robert Mercer feels, and that probably explains why he funds Breitbart News and is Trump’s biggest benefactor. The view that blacks were better off when they lacked full citizenship and that their welfare had nothing to do with their ability to vote or find housing or have equal access to public accommodations, these are not mainstream Republican or conservative views. They take a noxious and highly contentious set of beliefs about government programs and put them on racist steroids.
With this set of beliefs, you could justify doing almost anything to the black community on the premise that they’d actually be better off.

The idea that this pile of bovine excrement would be able to show the slightest shred of empathy for a fallen soldier—especially if that soldier were African-American—is laughable. This is the man who tossed rolls of paper towels to people in Puerto Rico who had no food, water, or electricity. He is quite simply a sociopath, unable to consider any human emotion unless it impacts him directly. Say what you want about George W. Bush, but no reports ever came out of a military family being insulted after receiving a call from him on the death of a loved one. Trump is missing the part in normal humans which allows for empathy, for seeing other people through their eyes. Moreover, he’s a really bad sociopath. He can’t even fake empathy.
This is why the appellation “Moron Hitler” is apt. Like Hitler, he is completely devoid of warmth for fellow human beings. No one’s suffering touches him. He is unfeeling and uncaring. And that is a dangerous type of man to have at command of a superpower’s military forces.
Lost in the shytstorm about the disrespect of Sgt. Johnson’s family was the news that Melania has a body double. There’s something so absolutely patently absurd about that..I can barely wrap my mind around it. They are so phony and disingenuous that they have a double for the plastic First Lady who doesn’t do shyt already.
You really can’t make this stuff up. No studio head would accept this in a Hollywood script.
