I think Rachel Maddow is the one person in the media who has been on the beginning story about the pregnant women in detention centers, being blocked from having the abortions that they want.
Having lost the case to force this young woman to carry her pregnancy to term, the Justice Department is lashing out.

On Friday, the Department of Justice filed an astonishing appeal with the Supreme Court, urging the justices to intervene in the Jane Doe case that seemed to have ended last week. Doe, an undocumented 17-year-old in a federally funded Texas shelter, was denied abortion access by the Trump administration, which argues that it can force undocumented minors to carry unwanted pregnancies to term. On Oct. 24, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit ruled that Doe must be allowed to terminate her pregnancy, which she did the next day. Now the DOJ is urging the Supreme Court to vacate that decision—and punish the ACLU attorneys who represented Doe.
Make no mistake: With this filing, Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ Justice Department has declared war on attorneys and groups who dare to oppose it in court.
Because Doe obtained her abortion, Friday’s appeal might seem pointless, presenting no live controversy for the justices to adjudicate. But the DOJ has three goals here. First, it wants the Supreme Court to punish the D.C. Circuit for issuing a decision that it believes to be egregiously wrong by wiping the entire ruling off the books. Second, the DOJ wants to eradicate a decision that sets a legal precedent it despises. Doe’s lawsuit was initially brought as part of a class action, and the ACLU will continue to litigate its broader claim against the Trump administration’s absolute bar on abortion access for undocumented minors. As long as the D.C. Circuit’s decision remains on the books, those lawsuits are almost guaranteed to succeed. The Justice Department wants it gone so that it can litigate this issue anew.
Third, and most importantly, Friday’s appeal is a flagrant effort to crucify the individual attorneys who represented Doe, and to terrify likeminded lawyers into acquiescence. The DOJ thus asks the Supreme Court to force Doe’s lawyers to “show cause why disciplinary action should not be taken” against the ACLU—either by the court itself or by state bars—for “material misrepresentations and omissions” designed to thwart an appeal.
In other words, the DOJ is using the full weight of a government agency to threaten professional ruin upon the lawyers who defended Jane Doe’s constitutional right to abortion access.
……………………………………………………..What really seems to enrage the DOJ, however, is that Doe didn’t attend a second counseling session—which would have been duplicative and wasteful, and caused her yet more needless delay—because the physician who counseled her the first time later agreed to perform the procedure. If ever there were an indicator of the un-distilled bad faith at work here, it’s government lawyers insisting that a non-person with no rights undergo a second round of the same counseling, not for the purposes of medical advice, but so that they would have more time to thwart her choice.
These allegations of wrongdoing are laughably flimsy and outwardly vindictive. Even under the DOJ’s contorted narrative, it’s obvious that the ACLU simply acted efficiently, and the Trump administration is bitter and embarrassed that it lost. The government argues that the ACLU “at least arguably had an obligation to notify the government” that Doe would terminate on Oct. 25—an “incredibly significant development.” But that’s just not how this works. The government had sufficient time to ask the Supreme Court to stay the D.C. Circuit’s decision before Doe terminated. In fact, Texas was already prepared with its own amicus brief backing the DOJ. But the government didn’t act in time. And it’s not the ACLU’s fault that its client secured her constitutional rights while the government dallied in its efforts to exert control of her reproductive capacities. This week-late effort to blame the ACLU for its “arguable” responsibility to ensure that the government could continue to harm their client is not just an effort to save face, but also an attempt to warn attorneys that zealous effectuation of their duties to the clients will now be punished.
The young woman who was successful, wasn’t the only pregnant girl in custody. What about the others?

The federal disaster response in Puerto Rico is now in its eighth week, and reporters have continued to question the official count of people who died as a result of Hurricane Maria. The official count has been under intense scrutiny since Buzzfeed reported last month that government officials, in the immediate aftermath of the storm, approved the cremation of 911 bodies, none of which were reflected in the official death toll. Those people were all judged to have died of natural causes having nothing to do with the storm, despite the fact that Puerto Rico’s medical examiner reviewed only medical records, not the bodies themselves.
Now the Associated Press reports that the average number of deaths each day in Puerto Rico rose sharply after the storm. From AP’s report:

Paul Ryan makes it plain: ‘We’re with Trump’

My concerns about Paul Ryan notwithstanding, he isn’t necessarily wrong.
The “We’re with Trump” line makes for a handy soundbite, but the phrase that stood out for me in the interview was, “We already made that choice.” Whether the Speaker meant it this way or not, Ryan seemed to effectively be conceding, “It’s a little late to change course now.”
And if that is what Ryan meant, he has a credible point. It’s been a year since Trump’s election, and in that time, the Speaker of the House – like the overwhelming majority of congressional Republicans – has gone along with the GOP president’s wishes. Republicans have supported him, defended him, and enabled him at every turn.
The Democratic attack ads, highlighting just how often various GOP members have voted with the Trump White House, are already in the works. Republicans already climbed into the pigpen, and whether they scramble to get out or not, they won’t be able to easily wash off the mud.
White House’s Cohn touts ‘trickle-down’ benefits in GOP tax plan

Gary Cohn, director of the National Economic Council in Donald Trump’s White House, sat down for a very interesting chat with CNBC’s John Harwood this week, and it looks like the president’s top economic adviser ended up saying a few things he probably didn’t intend to say.
As recently as late September, for example, Cohn argued that in the Republican tax plan, which he’s helped write, “Wealthy Americans are not getting a tax cut.” With Harwood, Cohn said something very different.
It’s worth appreciating, just as a matter of political rhetoric, that there are certain phrases that the right has learned to avoid. Advocates of privatizing public education, for example, steer clear of the word “vouchers,” for example, because they’re not popular – so they use pleasant sounding euphemisms such as “school choice” instead.
Similarly, advocates of massive tax breaks for the wealthy and corporations tend to avoid references to “trickle-down” tax policies because most of the public is repulsed by the idea of giving more money to those at the very top and waiting for prosperity to eventually work its way to everyone else.

At a bilateral meeting in Beijing this morning, Donald Trump lamented the U.S.-China trade imbalance, but said he blames “past administrations.” In other words, in the American president’s mind, the trade gap is the United States’ fault.
He reiterated the point at a question-free press briefing soon after.
It’s hard to overstate just how dramatic a departure this is from the American president’s previous posturing. ABC News did a nice job rounding up some of Trump’s most notable quotes on China from the campaign, during which he insisted, among other things, that China is “ripping us off,” is an “enemy” of the United States, has perpetrated “the greatest theft in the history of the world,” and prefers to “lie, cheat, and steal in all international dealings.”
At one campaign event in May 2016, Trump went so far as to say, “We can’t continue to allow China to rape our country and that’s what they’re doing.”

Atlanta’s next mayor could be a woman named Keisha, and observers are abuzz at the prospect. Atlanta mayoral candidate Keisha Lance Bottoms is the latest in a list of candidates whose ethnic-sounding names aren’t holding them back from seeking office.
Research has shown that black-sounding names could prove an obstacle for candidates applying for jobs or college, but such bias may be less of an issue at the polls. Such names are a striking contrast from those of black political leaders a generation ago, but could carry less of a stigma with black voters with friends and family who are similarly named.
The 1970s era of the “black is beautiful” movement led to a boom in Afrocentric names, and many of those children are now adults working across American society, including politics.
Johnstown, Pennsylvania, Is All out of Hope

A lot of people are talking today about Michael Kruse’s piece in Politico Magazine in which he traveled back to Johnstown, Pennsylvania to check in with Trump supporters he’d talked to last year. The basic takeaway is a bit different from the headline suggesting the president’s supporters never believed his promises. In fact, it’d be more accurate to say that they were actually quite hopeful when he was elected, but prudently skeptical. What’s changed is that they don’t really have much hope at all anymore, but their devotion to Trump is surprisingly undiminished nonetheless.
Some of the people Kruse profiles are sympathetic, others the farthest thing from it. It’s easy to find yourself cursing their pretzel logic and their curdled views on life. Who among us doesn’t want to self-apply a staple gun after reading something like this?
This area was represented for thirty-six years by Rep. John Murtha, an anti-choice Democrat who served as a Marine in the Vietnam War and received two Purple Hearts, the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, a Bronze Star, and the Navy Distinguished Service Medal. He was famous as an appropriator who brought home the bacon to his district by mastering the earmarking process.
The current representative, Republican Keith Rothfus is comparatively useless. His only committee assignment is to the Financial Services Committee, which has about as much direct relevancy to the working class people of Johnstown as the Indian Affairs Committee. But he couldn’t replicate Murtha’s effectiveness even if he wanted to because the Republicans did away with earmarks in the misguided belief that they were more invitations to corruption and waste than the lubricant that allowed the two parties to compromise and make deals.
It used to be that a very powerful congressman did a lot for the struggling people of Johnstown. Murtha certainly accomplished more for them than any president ever did. And they knew he was a Democrat and they voted for him eighteen times in a row.
Is there a reason why Tom Perriello can’t run for his old seat in Congress?

Most folks run for the House of Reps, as a stepping stone to some higher office..
In the end, they all want more than just a 2 year gig as one of 435 members – and not quite the same exclusivity or respect as the more comfortable 6 year gig in the other club of 100 – which hardly ever has a vacancy open up …the Senate.. Also merely a stepping stone to something higher for some ..
He’ll probably spend time building up national name recognition and political capital by helping other folks running for office around the country…And hope he can call in favors when something bigger opens up and he throws his hat in again.. And the folks he helps think highly enough of him for the gig he sets his sights for, to back him.. that’s assuming they themselves aren’t also gunning for said gig..
He’ll probably try again for Governor in 4years…or the Senate if by chance a seat opens up…or as some party bigwig….or even start auditioning for VP …as a long shot..
