Friday Open Thread | Alabama Senate Candidate Roy Moore Accused of Inappropriate Behavior With MINORS

From the Washington Post:

Woman says Roy Moore initiated sexual encounter when she was 14, he was 32

Leigh Corfman says she was 14 years old when an older man approached her outside a courtroom in Etowah County, Ala. She was sitting on a wooden bench with her mother, they both recall, when the man introduced himself as Roy Moore.

[….]

Alone with Corfman, Moore chatted with her and asked for her phone number, she says. Days later, she says, he picked her up around the corner from her house in Gadsden, drove her about 30 minutes to his home in the woods, told her how pretty she was and kissed her. On a second visit, she says, he took off her shirt and pants and removed his clothes. He touched her over her bra and underpants, she says, and guided her hand to touch him over his underwear.

[….]

Aside from Corfman, three other women interviewed by The Washington Post in recent weeks say Moore pursued them when they were between the ages of 16 and 18 and he was in his early 30s, episodes they say they found flattering at the time, but troubling as they got older. None of the women say that Moore forced them into any sort of relationship or sexual contact.

Wendy Miller says she was 14 and working as a Santa’s helper at the Gadsden Mall when Moore first approached her, and 16 when he asked her on dates, which her mother forbade. Debbie Wesson Gibson says she was 17 when Moore spoke to her high school civics class and asked her out on the first of several dates that did not progress beyond kissing. Gloria Thacker Deason says she was an 18-year-old cheerleader when Moore began taking her on dates that included bottles of Mateus Rosé wine. The legal drinking age in Alabama was 19.

I don’t care if ‘ consent’ was 16. HE was a grown man, and THEY were underaged CHILDREN.
Absolutely disgusting.

These are but 4. You honestly think that it’s only these four?

Come on, now.

This mofo sent out a FUNDRAISING LETTER TONIGHT BASED ON THIS.

And, what says the GOP?

Oh, you know them. Cowards all.

The guest on LarryO said, in reference to the GOP’s comments on this…
” The phrased IF TRUE, is the GOP’s answer to pedophilia, just as ‘thoughts and prayers’ is to gun violence.”

Roy Moore on Hannity, asked about whether he ever dated girls as young as 16:

    “I don’t dispute that.”

Roy Moore: “I don’t remember ever dating any girl without the permission of her mother”

Sean Hannity: Do you remember dating girls that young?

    Roy Moore: “Not generally, no.”

“..Early this year, “President”**Donald Trump’s son-in-law and aide, Jared Kushner, met a top executive at CNN parent Time Warner Inc. and raised concerns about the network’s coverage of the presidential election.

Mr. Kushner told the executive, Gary Ginsberg, that CNN should fire 20% of its staff because they were so wrong in their analysis of the election and how it would turn out, people familiar with the matter say…”

“…The White House is bracing for another staff shakeup upon “President”** Donald Trump’s return from Asia, with senior-level staff moves that could further consolidate chief of staff John Kelly’s power in the West Wing.

Deputy chief of staff Rick Dearborn — a former top aide to Jeff Sessions in the Senate who played a central role during the presidential transition — is expected to be reassigned to the Commerce Department or another federal agency, according to multiple administration officials and outside advisers familiar with plans for the staff change.

Dearborn has become increasingly marginalized internally since Kelly’s arrival in late July.

Dearborn’s departure would make him the latest in a growing conga line of West Wing aides who started on Inauguration Day but failed to last a full year. It would help Kelly clear the ranks of staffers he inherited from his predecessor Reince Priebus, whose tenure was marked by infighting and competition between loyalists brought in from the Republican National Committee and alumni of Trump’s renegade campaign.

Since taking over the operation last July, Kelly has conducted top-to-bottom reviews of every department and met with all senior officials to understand their long- and short-term goals.

He has tried to root out unofficial channels to Trump — like the cellphone of former bodyguard Keith Schiller — as well as positions that did not have a clear portfolio beneath them, such as Sebastian Gorka, a former deputy assistant to the president with vague duties.

Kelly is also increasingly relying on White House staff secretary Rob Porter, a former Rhodes scholar and Harvard classmate of Jared Kushner, who has taken on a broader role helping to coordinate policy in the West Wing…”

“…Rupert Murdoch is said to be interested in buying CNN – which, if true, could prove to be an interesting development given Mr Murdoch’s reported close association with Donald Trump, who has repeatedly railed against the network.

The news comes after reports saying Mr Trump’s administration may force AT&T to ditch the network to receive antitrust approval of its $85.4bn deal with Time Warner.

According to Reuters, Mr Murdoch called AT&T chief executive Randall Stephenson twice in the last six months and talked about CNN.

It would not be the first time Mr Murdoch has expressed interest in taking over CNN.

In 2014, Twenty-First Century Fox proposed buying Time Warner for $80bn. But the company abandoned the plan in the face of Time Warner’s resistance, Reuters said…”

“…Since news broke that the Justice Department may be using CNN as a leverage point to exact concessions from AT&T, CNN employees see the hidden hand of Donald Trump at work. “This is political, this is unprecedented, and the only explanation is political pressure from the White House,” one CNN staffer told my colleague Joe Pompeo. As a candidate, Trump inveighed against the deal, vowing to block it. And as president, Trump routinely bashes CNN and the network’s president Jeff Zucker. Trump even tweeted a video of himself body-slamming CNN’s logo Photoshopped onto a wrestler’s body.

Inside Time Warner, executives are now discussing another possible culprit behind the deal’s delay: Rupert Murdoch. According to executives I spoke with, the theory is that Murdoch privately encouraged Trump to scuttle the deal as revenge for Time Warner rejecting Murdoch’s $80 billion takeover offer in 2014. “A direct competitor, who was spurned from buying us, perhaps is trying to influence the judicial process? That’s corruption on top of corruption,” one Time Warner executive told me. “It’s bad enough what the president has been doing.” A Murdoch spokesperson called the claim “laughable and categorically untrue,” adding: “If Trump is doing this to punish CNN we have nothing whatsoever to do with it.”

Murdoch’s political alliance with the administration has been notably close, with some of Murdoch’s Fox News name brands among the president’s most devoted water carriers. Sean Hannity hammers at how the Russia probe actually exposes Hillary Clinton and called the Republican tax plan “Reaganesque,” while Laura Ingraham scored an interview with Chief of Staff John Kelly on her first episode, and, later that week, the president himself…”

  6. eliihass says:

“…On August 1, one day after the abrupt exit of White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci, President Trump dined with a communications whiz: Rupert Murdoch.
The two men had a private dinner at the White House, according to two sources with direct knowledge of the meeting.

Murdoch is the patriarch of 21st Century Fox (FOX), one of the world’s most powerful media companies, and News Corp, the owner of newspapers like the Wall Street Journal. He doubles as the CEO of Fox News.

So any interaction between the two men is intriguing, especially because the Journal’s editorial board has become increasingly critical of the president. A White House spokeswoman did not respond to requests for comment about the dinner. A Murdoch spokeswoman declined to comment.

In April, the New York Times identified Murdoch as one of Trump’s informal advisers and said the two men speak by phone every week.

Around the same time, Gabriel Sherman of New York magazine reported that Trump was overheard on a hot mic telling Fox Business host Maria Bartiromo that “Rupert’s been a lot better to me than Roger ever was.”

CNNMoney has previously reported that the president has told associates that Murdoch treats him better than ex-Fox News chairman Roger Ailes did. The president “talks about how the coverage under Murdoch is better than under Ailes,” a White House source said in April..”

U.S. soldier killed in the Niger ambush was bound and appears to have been executed, according to two villagers

The body of La David Johnson, one of four American soldiers killed in an ambush by Islamist militants last month, was found with his arms tied behind his back, according to villagers who saw his body. Johnson had a large gaping wound in the back of his head, they say. The new information raises questions about whether he was captured and killed after the attack, and it could help explain why it to took two days to find Johnson’s body while the other men’s remains were retrieved several hours after the battle.
Johnson’s widow has said that the U.S. military advised her not to view his corpse, a suggestion often made when remains are badly disfigured. Myeshia Johnson has emerged as a prominent figure in the uproar over the Niger attack, accusing President Trump of acting cavalierly about her husband in a condolence call, a charge the White House has denied. She has also complained of receiving little information about what happened to her husband

Red state lawmakers find blue state piggy bank

    Source: The Hill

BY JESSIE HELLMANN – 11/10/17 06:06 AM EST

Red states are using blue states as their new piggy bank in the GOP Congress.

On big legislative issues such as tax reform and ObamaCare repeal, Republicans in the Senate have sought to redistribute federal funds from New York, New Jersey and other blue states dominated by Democrats to the red states in the South, Midwest and Great Plains that are mostly represented by the GOP.

The most recent example is a GOP tax plan that would limit local and state sales, income and property tax deductions — which would hurt suburban taxpayers in blue states with high property taxes.

Republicans are doing away with the deduction because they need to lower the cost of their tax bill, which reduces the corporate tax rate to 20 percent. It just so happens that the major deduction getting the axe delivers big benefits to blue-state taxpayers.

Air Force failed three times to stop Texas church shooter from purchasing guns: report

    Source: The Hill

BY JULIA MANCHESTER – 11/10/17 09:31 AM EST

The Air Force missed three opportunities to prevent Texas church shooter Devin Kelley from purchasing firearms in recent years, according to a report from Reuters.

The military branch missed two opportunities to stop Kelley from buying guns after he was accused of violence in 2012, according to officials and military documents obtained by the publication.

Kelley had been court-martialed in 2012 for assaulting his wife and stepson, including cracking the infant’s skull. Authorities also missed a third chance to put an alert on Kelly when a Pentagon probe of cases did not include him.

The report comes after the Air Force revealed on Monday it had failed to enter Kelly’s domestic violence conviction in a federal database used for background checks on gun sales.

Farmers move to defy Trump on NAFTA

    Source: Politico

After trusting that the president would have their backs, many agricultural advocates now feel a sense of betrayal.

By ADAM BEHSUDI 11/09/2017 10:24 PM EST

After spending nine months indulging President Donald Trump’s desire to renegotiate NAFTA, agricultural groups representing farmers in Trump-supporting states across the heartland are now moving aggressively to save an agreement they consider crucial to their industry.

The once-powerful agricultural lobby was somewhat muted in its warnings about losing a significant portion of the $17.9 billion worth of agricultural products exported last year to Mexico, the U.S.’ third-largest trading partner, believing that the Trump administration would reach a settlement on other aspects of NAFTA while leaving agricultural trade alone.

Now, with Trump threatening to issue a formal intent to withdraw from the deal, farming groups say it’s clearer than ever that their pleas to save the pact are barely registering with a president intent on its destruction. “I’ve come to believe this administration is determined to end NAFTA,” said Gordon Stoner, a fourth-generation Montana wheat farmer who leads the National Association of Wheat Growers.

The fearful tone now coming from many of the nation’s farm groups has only amplified as America’s agriculture sector confronts the loss of its main profit driver — foreign exports. Many are now mobilizing behind the scenes to stave off what most believe would be a disaster for American farmers
