Tuesday Open Thread | The real reason Robert Mueller is sitting on a sealed indictment of Donald Trump

Over the weekend, Palmer Report spelled out the evidence which strongly suggests that Special Counsel Robert Mueller is sitting on at least one sealed indictment against Donald Trump, even as he openly pursues Trump’s various underlings. I’ve since been chewing on why Mueller would take this particular path. It’s now become more clear: it’s all about blocking Trump from being able to pardon anyone.

As I laid out earlier, court records list the indictment against Paul Manafort and Rick Gates as “Indictment (B)” means there’s also an “Indictment (A)” floating around out there, still under seal (link). By definition, Indictment (A) has to be against someone of higher value in the investigation than Manafort, which shortens the list to Donald Trump, Jeff Sessions, and maybe Jared Kushner. The target of the sealed indictment also has to be someone whose crimes relate to the crimes that Manafort and Gates are charged with, which essentially narrows it down to just Donald Trump himself. In other words, Mueller is sitting on a sealed indictment against Trump. But why?

It was a Palmer Report reader who helped me put the pieces together, as I’m once again reminded that I’m fortunate to have the smartest audience in all of politics. Various respected legal experts are of the belief that if Donald Trump tries to pardon his own alleged co-conspirators in the Trump Russia scandal, the courts will rule that those pardons are unconstitutional. Of course that puts the legal burden on Mueller to demonstrate that Trump’s underlings truly are his co-conspirators.

The shortest route to get there: each time Robert Mueller gets a grand jury to indict one of Donald Trump’s underlings (Manafort, Gates, Michael Flynn, etc) for any given crime, he’s having that grand jury indict Donald Trump as part of that same criminal conspiracy. That way, if Trump does try to pardon any of these people, Mueller can immediately unseal the indictment against Trump, thus blocking that pardon. This is almost surely why Mueller has a sealed “Indictment (A)” against Trump in the Manafort-Gates case.

I really need to get those things out of the way. Jonne called and she picked up the honey baked ham. I picked up my Brownie cake today too. I’ll be cooking all day tomorrow.

    It was one of those volunteer duties, the one where you agree to talk to your kid’s class about your job.     I stood at the wipe-off board and wrote down what the kids called out: Turkey, dressing, pumpkin pie.

    Then it happened: One child called out, “Macaroni & cheese.”

    Across the room, every white child said a version of “Say what?” And every black child said a version of “Well, sure.”

    The person who really got educated that day wasn’t the kids. I’d learned that America’s beloved comfort food leads a double life.

    In black culture, for the most part, macaroni & cheese is the pinnacle, the highest culinary accolade. Who makes it, how it’s made and who’s allowed to bring it to a gathering involves negotiation, tradition and tacit understanding. It’s made from scratch and usually involves multiple kinds of cheese, secret touches (eggs and evaporated milk may be involved) and debates over toppings. It’s baked, and it’s a side dish, but it’s the side dish of honor, present at every important occasion.

    Just rip the top off a blue box? It would be like ripping through your grandmother’s heart.

    In her family, macaroni & cheese was “a sacred thing.” It wasn’t until she went to an integrated high school that she learned that her white friends did it differently.

    Alabama ex-cop says she was tasked with keeping Roy Moore away from cheerleaders at high school games

    A retired Alabama police officer told MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell on Tuesday that she had to keep an eye on Alabama Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore in the 1980s at local high school football games because he would regularly harass the team’s teenage cheerleaders.

    Faye Gary, who for 37 years was an officer at the Gadsden Police Department, explained to Mitchell that Moore’s reputation for pursuing underage girls was widely known throughout the community.

    “We were also told to watch him at the ballgames, and make sure that he didn’t, you know, hang around with the cheerleaders,” said Gary.

    Gary also said she learned that Moore had been barred from entering the local shopping mall because he had been “harassing” young women who worked there.

    Moore faces multiple allegations that he inappropriately pursued teenage girls when he was in his 30s, including allegations from two women that Moore tried to force them to have sexual contact with him when they were both under the age of consent

    Social media was quick to take issue with Walsh, who rudely insinuated that Lynch was “uneducated” even though he graduated from Cal-Berkely with a degree in social welfare and is making his way through graduate school.

          No salad for me outside my home, family and a very select few restaurants… ..I’m so, so picky about who makes my salads…washing stuff properly…hygiene in general ..especially since salads aren’t cooked ..and so no heat to destroy stuff that’s potentially lurking.. And salmonella from poorly handled dressing..

Democrats took back Congress in the 2006 midterms, through a combination of direct engagement, district-based flexibility on policy, and rhetorical adjustments. The majority gained in 2006 is the majority that delivered all of the legislative-policy wins progressives hail from the first two years of the Obama administration, including the Affordable Care Act.

    A few weeks ago, California requested $7.4 billion in disaster aid following the massive series of wildfires in the northern part of the state that killed 43 people and destroyed nearly 9,000 structures. Actually, let’s back up. That’s not quite accurate. California’s Democratic governor, its two Democratic senators, and its 39 Democratic members of Congress asked for $7.4 billion. With only one exception, California’s Republican delegation boycotted a request for disaster funding for their own state.

    Yesterday the Trump administration responded to California’s request:

    While the request includes anemic supplemental funding for states ravaged by hurricanes, it contains no funding whatsoever for rebuilding the communities in California devastated by the recent wildfires…. “For the Administration to not request even a single additional penny to help rebuild the communities devastated by the worst fires in California’s history is mind-boggling,” [said the two congressmen who led the disaster relief effort].

    WASHINGTON — The Federal Communications Commission is preparing a full repeal of net neutrality rules that require broadband providers to give consumers equal access to all content on the internet, putting more power in the hands of those companies to dictate people’s online experiences.

    Ajit Pai, the chairman of the F.C.C., plans to reveal a sweeping proposal to scrap the net neutrality rules on Tuesday, according to two people familiar with the plan, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the details are not public. The rules, created during the Obama administration, prohibit broadband providers from blocking, slowing down or charging more for the delivery of certain internet content. The proposal will be presented in a December meeting of F.C.C. commissioners and is expected to pass in a 3-to-2 vote along party lines.

    A rollback of net neutrality regulations would represent a significant victory for broadband and telecom companies like AT&T and Comcast and would amount to a strike against consumers. When the rules were passed in 2015, they underlined the importance of high-speed internet to the lives of Americans and the need to more strongly regulate the communications service like a utility, as essential as electricity and the telephone.

    WASHINGTON (Reuters) – A group of about a dozen U.S. State Department officials have taken the unusual step of formally accusing Secretary of State Rex Tillerson of violating a federal law designed to stop foreign militaries from enlisting child soldiers, according to internal government documents reviewed by Reuters.

    A confidential State Department “dissent” memo not previously reported said Tillerson breached the Child Soldiers Prevention Act when he decided in June to exclude Iraq, Myanmar, and Afghanistan from a U.S. list of offenders in the use of child soldiers.     Keeping the countries off the annual list makes it easier to provide them with U.S. military assistance. Iraq and Afghanistan are close allies in the fight against Islamist militants, while Myanmar is an emerging ally to offset China’s influence in Southeast Asia.

    Documents reviewed by Reuters also show Tillerson’s decision was at odds with a unanimous recommendation by the heads of the State Department’s regional bureaus overseeing embassies in the Middle East and Asia, the U.S. envoy on Afghanistan and Pakistan, the department’s human rights office and its own in-house lawyers.     The Trump administration is leaning toward naming Thomas Brunell, a Texas professor with no government experience, to the top operational job at the U.S. Census Bureau, according to two people who have been briefed on the Bureau’s plans.

    Brunell, a political science professor, has testified more than half a dozen times on behalf of Republican efforts to redraw congressional districts, and is the author of a 2008 book titled “Redistricting and Representation: Why Competitive Elections Are Bad for America.”

    The choice would mark the administration’s first major effort to shape the 2020 Census, the nationwide count that determines which states lose and gain electoral votes and seats in the House of Representatives.

    The fate of the Census under Trump has been closely watched by voting-rights advocates worried that the administration — which has already made unsupported claims about voter fraud — might nudge it in directions that over- or under-count some Americans. Subtle bureaucratic choices in the wording and administration of the Census can have huge consequences for who is counted, and how it shifts American voting districts.

      Chris Matthews doesn’t remember the show very well when he thinks that Archie Bunker was made fun of because Archie was a White working class individual. Chris Matthews said in the video above:
      “You know, ever since we started this Archie Bunker thing in the early ’70s, making fun of white working people, we kissed them goodbye,” ”

      The Show “made fun of” Archie Bunker because of his racism and sense of White superiority.
