His face is always adorned with a Lord Petyr Baelish-like smirk that is a mixture of evil, arrogance and bitch-ass-ness. He has a show on Fox News even though he’s not especially interesting, good-looking or talented. He’s perfectly mediocre. There’s only one way to describe him:

On Wednesday at 11:09 a.m., I received a perfectly mediocre email from the head booker at Tucker Carlson Tonight (notice the perfectly mediocre name of the show). They requested an interview, saying: “We often see your pieces in The Root, and we’d be interested in discussing many of the themes relating to race in our country that you often analyze.”
That seems perfectly mediocre. So you told them “yes”?
Well, as soon as I read the email, my “nigga senses” started tingling.
Your what?
My nigga senses. You see, there are many black people who possess a superherolike sense of detecting white fuckery from afar. Whenever I smell Caucasian shenanigans, I feel a tingling at the tips of my fingers and toes. Some people, including my doctor, think I should be tested for the gout, but trust me, it’s a superpower. It’s like Spider-Man’s spidey senses. When I first discovered them, I put in an application with the X-Men, but they haven’t called back. I know it’s because Wolverine be hating on me.
So what did you do when you felt the tingling?
I did what any smart black man should do: I asked a black woman—specifically, my editor-in-chief, Danielle Belton. I knew she would give me a thoughtful, well-reasoned, educated response.
And what did she say?
“Don’t do it. Issa trap.”

I’m very familiar with that tingling one gets when one suspects a white person like Tucker Carlson is up to no good. A core truth we’ve learned from the Wolff book that many are overlooking: the fact that Trump didn’t want or expect to be president means he didn’t want or intend to help ANY of those he claimed to want to help, and instead intended to leave them with Clinton as their president.

2/ Fundamentally, one CANNOT run for President of the United States without wanting or intending to win unless you’re 100% fine with your opponent becoming president and governing those you’ve publicly said she must never govern. Trump sold out his base to get his own TV network.
3/ FIRE AND FURY ends the illusion that Trump cared about those he claimed to care about during the campaign. You can say that Bannon cares about them—you can say that folks like John Kelly do care about the country—but you CANNOT say Trump cares about the country OR “his base.”
4/ We can say that Trump doesn’t care about the country—and that FIRE AND FURY finally PROVES it—because Trump was not only OK with someone who he said was unfit to serve being president, he PREFERRED that outcome to him having to do the job instead of getting his own TV network.
5/ We have AMPLE evidence Trump tried to lose the election and abandon his “base.” Remember that $1 billion he promised to spend to win? Instead he spent almost nothing—preferring to hoard his gold in anticipation of a TV network rather than lose any real coin to help his “base.”
6/ Wolff establishes that Trump and his team wanted it to be a close election in Hillary’s favor so they could all go on to bigger and better things than public service. He establishes, too, that Trump had no political beliefs—no commitment to any “base”—besides getting richer.
7/ So what emerges from FIRE AND FURY is that the entire Trump campaign was a scam and the entire Trump presidency an unhappy accident that no one in Trumpworld was prepared for or even remotely interested in. There’s no sense that Trump wanted to help ANYONE or advance ANY idea.
8/ This is why so much of Trump’s statement in response to Steve Bannon was about Trump having an agenda, and that agenda being about “the forgotten men and women” of America. Because the book establishes that the man most likely and eager to forget them was Donald Trump himself.
9/ My question is how the MEDIA now recalibrates its coverage of the administration, knowing it came in with no agenda, values, or interest in governing. Do we still pretend Trump has a coherent ideology on anything?
Or rather, as McConnell says—per Wolff—”he’ll sign anything”?
10/ I worry we keep learning things about Trump—for instance, that we must hunt not for the lies in what he says but the truth, as the latter is vanishingly rare—but somehow coverage of him never really changes because the media (as an institution) is stuck in navel-gazing mode.
PS/ I agree with those who note Trump surely believed a narrow Clinton victory would help launch Trump TV with four years of nonstop Hillary-hatred. Trump could then help handpick the GOP challenger to Clinton—perhaps even Ivanka—making the whole election a lose-win-win for him.
This twisted nightmare of a joke will have to end sooner or later..

A California Senate leader introduced legislation Thursday aimed at circumventing a central plank in the new Republican tax law, introducing a model that — if successful — could be replicated across the country.
California Senate President Pro Tempore Kevin de León (D) introduced a bill that would allow taxpayers to make a charitable donation to the California Excellence Fund instead of paying certain state taxes. They could then deduct that contribution from their federal taxable income.

Republican mega-donor Rebekah Mercer publicly rebuked Steve Bannon on Thursday in a rare, and brutal, public statement. But before she did, Mercer spoke to President Donald Trump.
During the conversation, which took place Thursday afternoon and was relayed to The Daily Beast by a senior White House official, Mercer and Trump addressed Bannon’s scorched-earth comments that appear in Michael Wolff’s new book on the Trump White House, and the donor reaffirmed her support for Trump’s presidency and his agenda.
White House spokesman Raj Shah declined to confirm the call or its details, but did not deny that it took place.
The interaction underscored the high stakes of the very public and very ugly feud between the president and his former chief strategist. Bannon, again the chairman of the right-wing, pro-Trump Breitbart News, has in two days been publicly scorned by his most high-profile political ally in Trump, and his most deep-pocketed financial backer in Mercer.
“My family and I have not communicated with Steve Bannon in many months and have provided no financial support to his political agenda, nor do we support his recent actions and statements,” Mercer said, in a statement to The Washington Post published Thursday evening.
While it was clear that the Mercers were publicly distancing themselves from Bannon this week, two people with knowledge of their past meetings and conversations disputed the claim of “many months.” According to these sources, Bannon and Mercer met in New York as recently as October. And right around the time of Bannon’s ejection from the Trump White House in August, Bannon met with patriarch Robert Mercer for a five-hour-long meeting “to plot out next steps,” according to a report in Axios at the time.

Steve Bannon’s spectacular fall from grace in Trump World is a big, salty, delicious bowl of schadenfreude from the political gods in celebration of the new year.
Bannon wasn’t just one of Trump’s most senior aides and an architect of the destruction of the Republican Party; he was the multi-shirted, red-eyed White House troll, leaking tales of his brilliance to a constellation of reporters in the ostensibly hated mainstream media. His house organ Breitbart and a host of Trump-right websites and news outlets sang praises to his dank genius. Bannon, they proclaimed, was Trumpism in its distilled essence: revanchist, ahistorical, racially inflected, and consumed with an imaginary war on the media and America’s broader society.
Now, like two rats in a bag, Trump and Bannon are tearing at one another in a delicious public spat that has every possible bit of drama, except Bannon drunkenly bellowing for a round of fisticuffs with all comers and Trump offering to compare the length of their relative manhoods on live television. They deserve one another in so many ways.

This morning, as promised, the Hollywood Reporter published an extended essay by Michael Wolff based on his upcoming tell-all about the Trump regime, Fire and Fury.
We all read or saw snippets yesterday, mostly concerning Steve Bannon. This piece, “You Can’t Make This Shit Up: My Year Inside Trump’s Insane White House”, is even more revelatory, and frightening.
It details a government in free-fall. At the center is Trump, a man not only supremely unfit for the office he stole, but seen as so by everyone around him. Reading the piece, I’m reminded of nothing so much as the late Western Roman Empire, when factotums were placed on the throne in Ravenna and generals and courtiers plotted around them to be the real power behind the throne. And we all know what happened to Rome.

What is also stunning is that it took someone regarded as a mere gossip to write a book like this. Again, for all the good reporting coming out of the mainstream media, the one glaring blind spot it has is still trying to treat Trump like a normal politician. He’s not. And Wolff dispenses with that pretense. He shows Trump in all his dysfunctionality and hubris. This Trump is not remaking the Presidency; he’s destroying it. I’m still tickled that it’s confirmed that Reince was the snitch that we always knew him to be. He’s not remotely going to jail for anyone.
Reince may be many things—greedy, an unrepentant liar, a con artist, etc, but he has zero desire to end up on Mueller’s hit list, so he’s turning over every piece of evidence he has on hand.
