Wednesday Open Thread | The cop who killed 12-year-old Tamir Rice wants his job back

My eyes! My eyes! This can’t be real…..

The cop who shot and killed 12-year-old Tamir Rice in 2014 may get his job back after nearly eight months off the force.

The Cleveland Police Department fired Officer Timothy Loehmann in May 2017, not for killing Rice, but for lying on his job application. On Wednesday, Loehmann will begin arbitration proceedings, a third-party review of his firing, according to Northeast Ohio Media Group, in hopes of getting his job back.

The Cleveland Police Department fired Loehmann after an internal review found he had lied about his past experience as a police officer, failing to disclose that he had been let go from the Independence, Ohio Police Department after they determined he was unfit to be a police officer, due to a series of bad behavior and an emotional
breakdown.

But it was the 2014 shooting that sparked large protests across the country, after Loehmann and his partner, Frank Garmback, received a call about an African American kid who was playing with a toy gun in a Cleveland park. The 911 dispatcher failed to inform officers that the caller said the gun was “probably fake,” and Loehmann jumped out of the patrol car and fired at the 12-year-old almost instantly, killing him.

Both Garmback and Loehmann were cleared of any criminal wrongdoing, though the department suspended Garmback for 10 days for his role in the shooting, a decision he appealed to an arbitrator. He is currently awaiting a decision.

A 2017 Washington Post investigation found that hundreds of officers fired for misconduct have regained their jobs thanks to arbitration.

The City of Cleveland agreed to pay Rice’s family $6 million in April 2016 to avoid a lawsuit. The city did not admit any wrongdoing.

Forcing himself onto Davos… Now he gets to mingle on the taxpayer dime, with an elite group he always desperately wanted in with, but was always snubbed by, and looked down on..

And Gary Cohn, Mnuchin, Wilbur Ross, etc. all get to hitch a ride on Air Force One…and get to bill the American taxpayer for their luxury Swiss adventure..

“…GENEVA (AFP) – A group of Swiss campaigners launched a petition Wednesday aimed at keeping US President Donald Trump away from the World Economic Forum meeting in Davos later this month.

The petition headlined “Trump not welcome — stay out of Davos” was launched on the campax.org website at 9:00 am (0800 GMT) and had gathered some 2,500 signatures by mid-afternoon.

“We would be happy to have 10,000 or 30,000” signatures, Campax chief Andreas Freimuller told AFP.

“If you are anti-racist or anti-sexist, you would dislike him,” he said of Trump.

The campaign began after the White House made the surprise announcement Tuesday that Trump planned to become the first sitting US president to attend the annual meeting of the world’s political and business elite at Davos in nearly 20 years.

A string of US presidents have avoided attending the annual upscale event, fearing a sojourn to a European ski resort would make them look out of touch.

The last president to go was Bill Clinton, who attended in 2000.

“US President Donald Trump is on excellent terms with racism, Islamophobia, anti-Semitism, sexism, misogyny, bellicosity, climate change denial, human rights abuse and a policy that deepens poverty and inequality,” Campax maintains in its petition.

“We must resist Trump’s inhumane politics! We want to put the ‘World First’ — not ‘America First’,” it added, especially taking issue with Washington’s withdrawal from the Paris climate accords.

“I was a bit surprised that he will be coming,” head of the regional Graubunden police force Walter Schlegel told the Swiss news agency ATS, adding that Trump’s attendance would not require “major shifts” in the security detail in the resort town.

Last year, the forum was dominated by the appearance of Chinese President Xi Jinping, and Schlegel said the security arrangements needed to protect a Chinese or an American head of state were basically the same.

He warned though that Trump’s attendance increases the probability of demonstrations across all of Switzerland during the gathering.

Campax is aiming to organise a demonstration near the Zurich airport around the time of Trump’s arrival, Freimuller said…”

“…The Trump show is going on location.

On MSNBC this afternoon, Nicole Wallace spoke with political analyst Steve Schmidt about Trump‘s upcoming trip to the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Trump’s soon-to-be visit has already raised some eyebrows, given the perception of Trump being seen fraternizing with the mega elite.

“This is sort of a silly conversation in some ways because we don’t know what he’ll do. His missteps in Europe are… it looks like a blooper reel,” Wallace joked. “But on a serious note, I actually think this could seriously undermine his brand and could make him look like he’s full of bleep. You look like you’re full of it when you run as the guy who’s going to drain the swamp, and not only do you help fill up the swamp in Washington, but you go and swim around in a champagne and caviar filled swamp in Davos.”

“It’s amazing, when a President of the United States travels internationally, there’s a strategic purpose to it,” Schmidt said. “There’s some goal that the president is trying to obtain. I have no idea what the purpose of the trip is to Davos. It’s just another episode of a TV show––not so different, I suppose, from when the Brady Bunch took off to Hawaii for a two part special. The Trump show––off to Davos, off to the Alps! You have no idea what the purpose of it is.”

The comparison gave the entire panel, including Wallace, a good giggle…”

Why Trump gave Florida a special deal on oil drilling
    01/10/18 08:40 AM
    By Steve Benen

Last week, the Trump administration ignored all kinds of warnings and unveiled an expansive plan for coastal oil drilling. The move was quickly condemned by several key groups and officials, but it was the response from governors that stood out.

In all, 14 governors – including several Republicans – from states on both coasts denounced Donald Trump’s giveaway to the oil industry. Only one of the 14 is getting a special deal. NBC News reported:

The Trump administration said Tuesday it wouldn’t allow oil drilling off the coast of Florida, abruptly reversing course under pressure from Republican Gov. Rick Scott.

Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke said after a brief meeting with Scott at the Tallahassee airport that drilling would be “off the table” when it comes to waters in the eastern Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean off Florida…. Zinke said Tuesday that “Florida is obviously unique” and that the decision to remove the state came after meetings and discussions with Scott.

Are White House transcripts getting political touch-ups?
    01/10/18 09:20 AM
    By Steve Benen

During yesterday’s White House discussion on immigration policy, Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) asked Donald Trump if he’d support a “clean” bill on DACA now, extending protections to Dreamers, with a commitment to then begin negotiations on comprehensive immigration reform. The president said he had “no problem” with that.

“We’re going to do DACA and then we can start immediately on the phase two, which would be comprehensive,” Trump added. “Yeah, I would like to do that. I think a lot of people would like to see that, but I think we have to do DACA first.”

As we discussed earlier, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) quickly interjected, reminding the president of what the Republican position is supposed to be, but just as important, if you relied on the White House transcript to learn what was said, you missed a key detail. The Washington Post reported:

McCarthy apparently was not the only one concerned by Trump’s seeming agreement with Feinstein. When the White House released its official transcript Tuesday afternoon, the president’s line – “Yeah, I would like to do it” – was missing.

A White House official said that any omission from the transcript was unintentional and that the context of the conversation was clear.

And that may be true. Perhaps this was nothing more than an innocent clerical error. Maybe the White House didn’t deliberately omit an inconvenient presidential slip from the official transcript.

But I’m not sure Trump World deserves the benefit of the doubt on this.
