Tuesday Open Thread | State Department declines to sanction Russia for election meddling

WTF happened to Checks and Balances? Where are our leaders? If nothing is done then democracy is dead & the GOP is complicit. God help us all.

WASHINGTON — The US State Department said on Monday a 2017 US law was deterring billions of dollars in Russian defense sales, but it did not announce any sanctions under the measure designed to punish Russia for allegedly seeking to influence the 2016 US presidential election.

“Today, we have informed Congress that this legislation and its implementation are deterring Russian defense sales,” State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said. “Since the enactment of the … legislation, we estimate that foreign governments have abandoned planned or announced purchases of several billion dollars in Russian defense acquisitions.”

With the statement, President Donald Trump’s administration signaled it was not imposing new sanctions under a bill he reluctantly signed into law in August, just six months into his presidency.

Members of Congress, including Democrats and some of Trump’s fellow Republicans, have been clamoring for his administration to use sanctions to punish Moscow for past election interference and prevent future meddling in US polls.

“Given the long timeframes generally associated with major defense deals, the results of this effort are only beginning to become apparent,” Nauert said. “From that perspective, if the law is working, sanctions on specific entities or individuals will not need to be imposed because the legislation is, in fact, serving as a deterrent.”

In what was seen as a test of Trump’s willingness to crack down on Russia, Congress had given the administration a Jan. 29 deadline to release key reports under the law.

The State Department said further details were contained in a classified report it had submitted to Congress.

    Excerpt:

Asserting its role as the sovereign protector of its people, the Cherokee Nation filed an unprecedented lawsuit last year against some of the largest drug distributors in the U.S. The goal was to decrease the flow of opioids into the tribe’s district, 14 counties in northeast Oklahoma. The opioid epidemic, which President Donald Trump has called a national public health emergency, has been hard on the Cherokees.

Last week, a federal judge found the Cherokee Nation did not have the jurisdiction to bring the lawsuit forward in the tribe’s court system, which is based in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. It’s a blow to broader efforts by tribes across Indian Country to assert sovereignty in relation to the U.S. government.

“What’s the point of having sovereignty if you don’t exercise it,” Todd Hembree, attorney general for the Cherokee Nation, said to me shortly after filing the lawsuit. “When you come to Indian Country, and you avail yourself and you make profits and you do damage to Cherokee Nation citizens, you darn well better expect to be brought into a Cherokee Nation court.”

But…it was supposed to be the CRIMINALS, REMEMBER?

Ripped Apart: A Real-Life Example of the Trump Administration’s Deportation Policy

    “It’s just a devastating situation.”

There’s a sad, somber tone in Jacob Leonce’s voice as he tries to smile. He looks much younger than his 45 years tell you he should look. He wears jeans and a long-sleeved white t-shirt, a casual dress compared to others around him. His skin is a shade of mocha, a reflexion of his Caribbean birth and upbringing. Seated beside him in church this morning sit his two sons, both under the age of 10. Like many their age, they wish they could be doing something else rather than sitting through a Sunday service. All they know is that their Dad wanted them to be there today.

Because this was no average Sunday service at the New England Pentecostal Church in Pelham, New Hampshire. This was a service dedicated to Jacob, an immigrant from the Caribbean nation of St. Lucia, who was facing imminent deportation. Despite community groups rallying to his cause, a campaign to raise awareness by his pastor Bishop Stanley Choate, and a group of nearly 30 community leaders who attended Jacob’s most recent ICE check-in, there seemed to be little hope for Jacob. After having his stay of deportation appeal denied in December, Jacob knew that his time in the United States was limited. Despite the presence of multiple media outlets in attendance willing to share Jacob’s story, there wasn’t a whole lot that could be done for Jacob at the 11th hour.

Jacob is what this administration would refer to as a bad hombre. He came here on a sponsorship from the Caribbean nation of Saint Lucia in 1999. He is gainfully employed as a landscaper. He pays his taxes. He has no criminal record. He has a spouse and two children who are American citizens. He attends church and is active within his church community. As today’s service showed, he is respected and admired by a congregation whose members openly embraced and wept for him when it was announced that today would be his last service. Despite his initial melancholy, Jacob became more and more animated as the service progressed and by the time he spoke at the end of the service, he confided that he believed his deportation was part of God’s plan and he intended to embrace it.
