Friday Open Thread | Rick Gates attorneys quit

(CNN) Attorneys for former Trump campaign aide Rick Gates are seeking to withdraw from the case, according to a new court filing.

They provided a reason to the court under seal. Walter Mack, one of the now-former attorneys for Gates, declined to comment Thursday. In addition to Mack, the other two attorneys seeking to withdraw are Shanlon Wu and Annemarie McAvoy.

Gates pleaded not guilty in October to eight charges of money laundering and failing to register foreign lobbying and other business. His longtime business partner, former Trump campaign chair Paul Manafort, pleaded not guilty to nine counts in the same case as Gates.

CNN recently reported that Gates had quietly added a prominent white-collar attorney, Tom Green, to his defense team, signaling a possible change to his legal approach.

On Thursday, attorneys from Green’s firm were seen entering the building where special counsel Robert Mueller works.

Ladies, I have been out delivering mail, then my real job–wifely duties like grocery shopping, getting dinner, etc. However the majority of people in my office voted for chimp and they have absolutely nothing to say in defense of him. They know if they say it out loud that I will have a snappy comeback and they are already embarrassed. They are decent people but obviously made a very stupid decision. Hoping they regret it. I think they already are. Sometimes some of my black co-workers will say something amongst ourselves and we laugh. Then sometimes I just say something about the clown in the WH out loud when I can’t help myself and they (white) get so quiet.. Tee hee!!!!

    • Vitamin, my daughter said someone at their office KEEP the radio on Rush Limbaugh. She get so tired of that ISH. So one day she walked over to the radio and turned it off. The guy got upset. She told him we don’t want to listen to that garbage every day. I think dude is gone now. Good riddance.

Make them shame, Vitamin. Just look what he’s doing. He has no regard for the law. I’ve never seen such thuggery in my life. I hope Mueller hurries.

Your daughter has style. Mueller is taking his time and chimp and crew are squirming. Whether he knows it or not Mueller has chimp so tense.

Dow tumbles 550 points and is on track for worst week since 2016

The markets dropped more than 2 percent, with the Dow Jones industrial average falling more than 500 points, in the worst day for stocks since President Trump took office.
The plunge was a reversal from the heady sentiment that defined the markets for most of last year. The stock market has been on a historic nine-year bull market run.
Fears that intensified over rising interest rates and inflation from an overheated economy pulled the blue chips down after a remarkable run. Investors are rattled by lackluster earnings reports in the tech sector and big oil, as well as a sell-off in government bonds.
All indexes were down, with the tech-heavy Nasdaq falling 1.3 percent and the S&P 500, a broader measure of stocks, down 1.6 percent.

Why did the Dow dive 600 points?

Just looked for articles. Here’s one:

      Excerpt:

      Updated at 3:21 p.m. ET.
Major stock indexes dropped sharply Friday, with the Dow Jones industrial average tumbling more than 600 points amid signs that wage growth is finally picking up.

The 2.4 percent drop in the Dow came as the Labor Department reported 200,000 jobs were added to the economy last month, which was stronger than expected, and the unemployment rate stayed at 4.1 percent — the lowest since 2000.

But worries about inflation grew when the report showed that average hourly wages grew 2.9 percent from a year ago — the largest increase since June 2009. Yields for 10-year Treasurys hit four-year highs Friday.

All this sets the stage for the Federal Reserve to continue raising interest rates, with the next hike expected in March. It sets the stage to make credit cards, car loans and mortgages more expensive.

      Excerpt:

“(Reuters) – Wall Street extended losses on Friday after a round of weak earnings and on the back of robust payrolls data that sent bond yields higher, vexing all three major U.S. stock indexes.

“It’s all about the bond market, the bond market is calling the tune for stocks and has been all week. We’ve seen a very large back-up in yields and that’s giving investors reasons to sell equities,” said Paul Nolte, portfolio manager at Amundi Pioneer Asset Management in Boston.

The better-than-expected January employment report showed a surge in job growth and the largest wage gain in more than 8-1/2 years, fueling expectations that rising inflation will prompt the Federal Reserve to hike interest rates more aggressively this year.

From Silverman at BJ about the memo:

But here’s the real problem: the timelines don’t line up. Acting AG Yates is mentioned as one of the DOJ signatories. Acting AG Yates was fired in January 2017. The FISA warrant application to surveil Page, let alone the extension request(s), weren’t put before the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC) until September 2017. Similarly, FBI Director Comey is identified as one of the signatories, yet he was fired in March 2017. This argument doesn’t hold water: how could Comey and Yates be involved in signing off on a bogus warrant request based on the Steele dossier in September, or extensions 90 days later, if they’d been terminated from Federal service 8 and 5 month previous to the requests being made.

‘Alt-Right’ Group Takes Aim At ‘Black Panther.’ Ryan Coogler Responds.
    The director doesn’t seem fazed.

    By Bill Bradley

Although early reactions to the new Marvel movie “Black Panther” have been almost universally stellar, there are some critics who not only disliked the film ― they’re looking to sabotage it.

And now the rightful king of Wakanda, director Ryan Coogler, is responding.

A Facebook group called Down With Disney’s Treatment of Franchises and Its Fanboys, whose moderator describes himself as “alt-right,” recently announced its plans to intentionally tank “Black Panther’s” Rotten Tomatoes score once the movie starts showings on Feb. 15.

Last year, the same group claimed to use bots to take down the score for “The Last Jedi,” which is now around 48 percent despite a critics’ score above 90.

On Thursday, we asked Coogler for his thoughts on the group’s threat against “Black Panther.” The director hadn’t heard about Down With Disney, but he didn’t seem fazed when we explained it.

    Kevin McCarthy’s stint as a small-business entrepreneur
By Glenn Kessler February 2 at 3:00 AM

    SNIP

    The Facts
Here’s what the Feb. 21, 1986, review by Peter Tittl said: Kevin O’s “is located in a corner of McCarthy’s Yogurt. … The full official name is Kevin O’s Delicatessen but that’s an exaggeration. The deli is only a counter and refrigerator in McCarthy’s dining room.”
McCarthy’s Yogurt on Stine Street, one of the first frozen yogurt shops in Bakersfield, was owned by Kevin McCarthy’s uncle and aunt and managed by his cousin Tom. Tittl, in an email, recalled that the deli “wasn’t really distinct, all part of the operation with separate ‘Kevin O’s Deli’ signage.” Indeed, we found official California business documents for the yogurt shop, but no documents for the deli.
