    The American obsession with the gun is connected to its history as a major tool of white supremacy and the spread of European colonialism. 1/

    4:37 PM – 15 Feb 2018

    Restricting gun access for white men is not simply an issue of the gun industry but also of white supremacist culture 2/

    Whenever issue of gun control comes up, folks point out that it would likely have a negative impact on black & brown communities who would be subjected to even greater levels of policing. I agree however… 3/

    I agree, however, it’s important to recognize that Black people are already denied gun rights to a large extent & always have been. Philando Castile was in legal possession of a gun when killed by a cop who was later acquitted & the NRA was silent about it because… 4/

    …because the real issue of advocacy for the NRA & other right-wing organizations is maintaining gun rights for white men & in many cases ensuring that white men exercise gun rights others are unable to exercise such as open carry 5/

    Recall the cases of Black men being killed by police for carrying BB guns in states that permit open carry. In both the cases of Tamir Rice & John Crawford, their deaths were considered justified even tho they never broke the law 6/

    I’m saying all this to say that what is really at issue in the gun debate is the violence of white men & white supremacist capitalist patriarchy & that’s why there is such intractable conflict surrounding this topic among the white power structure 7/

    My birthday is Feb 21.

    I can’t afford my #healthcare after Feb. 28 because my monthly premium leapt to $1,978.10 in January.

    I’m re-applying for #Medicaid and #SSDI, but no one should have to do this in America.

    I am just one of millions.

    Americans have to stop dumping everything on schools. Schools were never intended to provide everything our corrupt, lazy, feckless leaders refuse to provide. They’re not health care facilities and nutrition stations and mental health care clinics and they’re not responsible for creating a facility that is as secure as a maximim security prison WHILE being welcoming places where kids want to spend 6 hours a day. The go-to entity in the US when we’re looking for someone to fix something is “schools”. It’s ridiculous. It is IMPOSSIBLE for ONE public system to carry the entire country.

    Schools have a full plate. Someone else in this country should do some work for the public good.

    Don’t bother debating gun-stroking dorks over what is or isn’t an “assault weapon.” Repeal the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act.
    *

The Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act was written to make it impossible to sue gun makers when people used their products, as designed, to kill people.

    *

Not only does the law set up almost insurmountable barriers to holding gun makers accountable for their decisions to flood the market with killing power, but if a victim’s family tries challenge the protections and fails, they are forced to pay the gun maker’s legal costs.

    *

It passed in 2005 with 65 votes in the Senate and 283 votes in the House, and was signed by George W. Bush.

    Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) and Bill Nelson (D-Fla.), who voted to make it impossible for survivors to sue the people who made or sold the guns used to murder their loved ones, are running for reelection to the Senate this year.

    The entire Harry Potter series runs 1,207 minutes. POC speak for 5 minutes and 40 seconds. That’s 0.47% which is represented by 12 characters (and 13 actors), two of whom are CGI. On average, each character speaks for 28.33 seconds. https://t.co/JeBjtU41Bk

    None of these stories are about race, yet they have cast white people by default. They each deal with fantastical elements yet seem to have found it “unrealistic” to cast POC in anything but the periphery.

    For too long universally accessible stories have used white avatars to tell them. While there are clearly exceptions, they are just that: exceptions.

    — Dylan Marron (@dylanmarron) February 14, 2018

    So if you see people celebrating #BlackPanther and don’t understand why, just remember that cinema has long been telling universally accessible stories that represent everyone with bodies that only represent some.

    The NRA Placed Big Bets on the 2016 Election, and Won Almost All of Them
    by Mike Spies and Ashley Balcerzak on November 9, 2016

    In federal elections, the NRA typically ranks among heavyweight outside spending groups. For the second cycle in a row, it has earned a place in the top ten. But 2016 was a unique year for the organization, owing to the fact that many super PACs, like Karl Rove’s American Crossroads GPS, which spent roughly $115 million to elect Mitt Romney in 2012, declined to back Trump. The NRA stepped in to fill the void, putting at least $30.3 million on the line to help elect the real estate mogul, more than any other outside group — including the leading Trump super PAC, which spent $20.3 million.

      FBI investigating whether Russian money went to NRA to help Trump
      BY PETER STONE AND GREG GORDON
      January 18, 2018 05:00 AM
      Updated January 23, 2018 07:43 PM

      The FBI is investigating whether a top Russian banker with ties to the Kremlin illegally funneled money to the National Rifle Association to help Donald Trump win the presidency, two sources familiar with the matter have told McClatchy.

      FBI counterintelligence investigators have focused on the activities of Alexander Torshin, the deputy governor of Russia’s central bank who is known for his close relationships with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and the NRA, the sources said.

      It is illegal to use foreign money to influence federal elections.

      It’s unclear how long the Torshin inquiry has been ongoing, but the news comes as Justice Department Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s sweeping investigation of Russian meddling in the 2016 election, including whether the Kremlin colluded with Trump’s campaign, has been heating up.

      The extent to which the FBI has evidence of money flowing from Torshin to the NRA, or of the NRA’s participation in the transfer of funds, could not be learned.

      However, the NRA reported spending a record $55 million on the 2016 elections, including $30 million to support Trump – triple what the group devoted to backing Republican Mitt Romney in the 2012 presidential race. Most of that was money was spent by an arm of the NRA that is not required to disclose its donors.

    Why Trump’s response to Florida’s school shooting is so inadequate
    02/15/18 08:43 AM
    By Steve Benen

    A gunman using a semiautomatic rifle killed at least 17 people in a Florida high school yesterday, wounding 14 others, five of whom suffering life-threatening injuries. Though modern presidents often offer words of consolation in response to deadly tragedies of this scale, Donald Trump has said very little since the school massacre took place.
    He did, however, publish a tweet this morning.

    “So many signs that the Florida shooter was mentally disturbed, even expelled from school for bad and erratic behavior. Neighbors and classmates knew he was a big problem. Must always report such instances to authorities, again and again!”

    First, part of the problem with this is the subtext: the president’s message gives the impression that the suspected gunman’s “neighbors and classmates” should have done more to prevent yesterday’s violence. In case the reality of this dynamic isn’t already obvious, let’s make it plain: the Parkland shooting wasn’t their fault.

    Second, let’s say we take Trump’s rhetoric at face value, and communities report instances of disturbed individuals to authorities “again and again.” Then what? Would the Republican White House and its allies in Congress support new restrictions on those individuals’ access to firearms? Are they prepared to make significant new investments in a robust mental-health network?

    What is it, exactly, the president believes should happen after Americans go to authorities “again and again”?

    Third, Trump may have forgotten this, but one of the first measures he signed after taking office expanded gun access for the mentally impaired. It passed the Republican-led Congress on Feb. 15, 2017 – exactly one year ago today – and received the president’s signature soon after.

    • Ametia says:
