    I am so glad that Black Panther is shattering records and I do hope it has the longest run before it goes to DVD. But I’m already ready for the DVD. However, I’ll wait.

    Black Panther viewers who now find themselves unable to get Wakanda out of their heads are in for some good news: New comics are on the way. This May, Marvel is relaunching its primary Black Panther comic with a new first issue. The restart is meant to appeal to curious new readers recently converted by Ryan Coogler’s film, but it also signals a major change of pace for T’Challa.

    Since taking over writing duties for Black Panther in 2016, bestselling author Ta-Nehisi Coates has shepherded the protagonist through a variety of political and philosophical struggles, from an incipient revolution in Wakanda to an attack by long-lost gods. But this new series, featuring art from Daniel Acuña, will send T’Challa to the far reaches of the multiverse where he will explore the mystery of the Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda.

    “Black Panther #1 is a creative challenge for me,” Coates said in a statement. “My first few books were more philosophical, and while that still rings true here, this is a fast-paced, high-octane story. And with Daniel Acuña’s art, I think people are really going to feel the energy and intensity here. I wanted people to feel like this is a really fresh storyline, and I think we succeeded in that. It’s meaty, it’s different, and it’s perfect for new readers just coming to the world of T’Challa and Black Panther.’’

    The circumstances surrounding Kentucky’s state House special election yesterday were rather tragic. Former Rep. Dan Johnson (R), facing allegations he molested a teenaged girl, committed suicide in December.

    Republicans were nevertheless optimistic about keeping the seat “red.” After all, this is a district Mitt Romney carried by 33 points in 2012, and which Donald Trump won by 49 points in 2016. The result was practically a foregone conclusion.

    At least it was right up until the Democratic candidate won last night.

    The Democratic Party’s run of good news in state legislative races continued Tuesday night, with a former legislator beaten in the 2016 Republican wave reclaiming a seat held briefly by a pastor who committed suicide after being accused of molesting a teenage girl.

    Linda Belcher, a Democrat first elected in 2008, won the special election for Kentucky’s 49th District with 68.45 percent of the vote.

    Black Panther’s Four-Day Total: $427 Million Worldwide and a Slew of Shattered Records

    Early numbers indicated that Black Panther would make between $100 million and $120 million in its opening weekend. As hype and wild pre-sale ticket numbers grew, though, that humble number got nudged higher and higher—all the way to $170 million a few days before the film finally hit theaters. Now, after the complete four-day weekend, the real numbers are here, and they’re even more astronomical than prognosticators hoped: Black Panther has made about $242 million domestically and $427 million worldwide, shattering box-office records.

    The Vibranium-powered movie had the fifth-highest opening for a film ever, a record it hit within its first three days by notching a smooth $201.8 million. It’s the third-highest gross in history for a four-day opening weekend, according to Box Office Mojo. It’s also the highest opening of all time for a film in February, as well as a film released over President’s Day weekend, handily crushing the $152 million record previously set by Deadpool. Black Panther has the second-highest haul for a Sunday, according to Variety, pulling in a cool $60 million, and it’s also etched its way into Marvel history by earning $25.2 million in Thursday night previews, making it the second-highest preview gross in the studio’s history; the film was narrowly beat out by Avengers: Age of Ultron, which earned $27.6 million. Black Panther has the second-highest three-day domestic opening haul for a Marvel film overall, edged out by the first Avengers film, which made $207.4 million.

    As some on Twitter have pointed out, Marvel’s latest has also easily outpaced one of DC’s most recent releases. In just four days, Black Panther earned more than Justice League did during its entire domestic run, which was about $228.6 million.
