Thursday Open Thread | Ryan Coogler breaks down Black Panther’s casino fight scene

After an opening weekend for the ages, it seems likely that we’ll be examining Black Panther for long time to come. However, director Ryan Coogler is getting a jump on everybody else by breaking down one of Black Panther‘s signature action sequences. In this extended video, Coogler explains nearly everything that went into the casino scene from the film’s second act, from the colors worn by the lead performers to some unexpectedly complicated fight choreography.

Coogler made this video for Vanity Fair‘s “Notes on a Scene” series, and he began by explaining the costume choices he made for Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, and Chadwick Boseman. As noted by Coogler, Nyong’o’s Nakia and Gurira’s Okoye are the only characters in the scene wearing green and red, respectively. Taken together with the black suit worn by Boseman’s T’Challa, Coogler intentionally invoked the colors of the Pan-African Flag.

Additionally, Coogler dived into the different fighting styles of Okoye and Nakia while also revealing why Okoye was so offended at the notion of wearing a wig for this undercover assignment. While the scene plays out fairly quickly onscreen, Coogler demonstrated that every move in the fight had a purpose. Nakia and Okoye’s weapons of choice also provided a contrast between a modern Wakandan warrior and a traditional fighter.

Perhaps the most impressive part of this sequence is the way that Coogler moved the camera from the first floor of the casino to the second while following the action on both levels. According to Coogler, pulling that off proved to be a technical challenge, but the end result was one of the most memorable shots of the film.

What did you think about Coogler’s breakdown of this Black Panther scene?

Trump is eliminating Affordable Housing in his bill while rents are rising at a rate average people can’t afford. People are being evicted and having to move because they can’t afford the high rent. Here in California one bedroom rent for $1,805 and up,two bedrooms rent for $2,494 and up, and three bedrooms rent for $3,000 and up.

The homeless population is growing out of control. I’ve passed elderly, children, and disabled people living under freeway underpasses. It’s sad, heartbreaking, but mainly it is disgusting. This shouldn’t be happening in a country like ours.

Not only that, he’s eliminating so many programs that needed assistance to the poor, elderly, and disabled. The man is insane, cold-hearted, and shouldn’t even be sitting in the oval office.

Mueller needs to hurry up and send his crazy ass to prison. That sign the woman held up on Saturday Night Live might be a little prophetic when it’s all said and done.

She’s crazier than a road lizard. Another false prophetess who doesn’t know God because if she did she’d know what God says about leaders: Hosea 8:4 They have set up kings, but not by me; they have made princes, and I knew it not; of their silver and gold have they made them idols that they may be cut off.

Btw, when I read the article about the so-called prophetess Kat Kerr, my thoughts were this: Begone witch, you have no powers here!

Just as we foresaw fam… This is the workings of the lazy, dumb, chest-puffing, perpetually whinging and winging it, incurious, non-existent mind of a very, very small, soulless, hollow, thin-skinned, insecure, desperate, megalomaniac buffoon – surrounded by his puppet masters who chew up words and ‘ideas’ and spit in his mouth …new words he repeats endlessly as he fundamentally mistakes the awesome set-up, resources and structure of the Federal government for yet another punishment tool in his douche toolbox …to be wielded at will when he doesn’t feel sufficiently praised and kowtowed to..

He’s in for not just a serious wake-up call, but several surprises..

Very upsetting, but needs to told so that all decent people will demand that the AR-15 be banned.
      The radiologist wrote:

I was looking at a CT scan of one of the victims of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, who had been brought to the trauma center during my call shift. The organ looked like an overripe melon smashed by a sledgehammer, with extensive bleeding. How could a gunshot wound have caused this much damage?

The reaction in the emergency room was the same. One of the trauma surgeons opened a young victim in the operating room, and found only shreds of the organ that had been hit by a bullet from an AR-15, a semi-automatic rifle which delivers a devastatingly lethal, high-velocity bullet to the victim. There was nothing left to repair, and utterly, devastatingly, nothing that could be done to fix the problem. The injury was fatal.

Greitens deserves everything he gets. He’s a smarmy, bullish, b*st*rd who lied to get elected, and after getting elected, used his power as governor to push every politician around who didn’t agree with him, even members of his own party. Greitens could use some GOP backers in the state legislature at this point, but few want anything to do with him, and I can’t blame them for not running to defend him.

Then Mayor of Burlington Sanders took an official trip to Russia shortly after his marriage to his second, and current, wife Jane. As an up and coming politician, there is no way, shape, and/or form that the KGB did not ensure that he was surveilled the entire time he was in the Soviet Union. Should Senator Sanders have been the nominee that material would have leaked. Should Senator Sanders become the nominee in 2020, that material will be leaked.

  14. rikyrah says:

If Bernie runs in 2020 this will be a major issue-when did he know the Russians were interfering on his behalf and why did he say/do nothing? Along with his wife’s FBI bank fraud investigation. And his pro gun votes. And his anti identity politics stances. https://t.co/0kHddO1rtH

Bernie is too busy blaming HRC for not informing him about possible Russian interference in the 2016 elections to answer any of the questions Marcus H. Johnson is asking. He’s in deflector mode, so don’t expect him respond to any questions he asked or accept responsibility for anything.

  15. rikyrah says:

Finally, someone who refuses to glorify the buffoon..

Have to say that John Brennan absolutely handles the buffoon and co. exactly how he ought to be handled and referred to..

No ‘president’ …just straight up first and last name, and a solitary ‘Mr’ thrown in for good measure …LOL..

And he’s one of the few who’s consistently refused to cede any ground in the media’s ‘same-same’ and ‘whataboutism’ and their various attempts to gloss over and elevate the bumbling buffoon with random lies about that time ‘Obama’ failed to do this or that..

  17. eliihass says:

Consciously, insistently and aggressively market and sell guns to evil people and scary bad guys.. and then turn around and insist that the ‘good’ guys a.k.a every other person, needs to buy a gun too, to protect from the guns sold to the bad guys..

    NRA greed and ‘capitalist’ gaslighting..

  18. Eliihass says:

Russia’s Wayne LaPierre doing his owners bidding – smearing and gaslighting, while faux-indignant about ‘socialist’ ‘smears’..

And the very same complicit media – Chuck Todd, Mika/Scarborough, Dana Bash etc., who’ve all rallied around once again normalize and to rah-rah again for the buffoon …praising him for ‘being presidential’ for a photo-op complete with cheat sheet in hand to remember to empathize and to inject a few ‘I hear yous’..

As Jeffery Goldberg(!) of all people said to Scarborough this morning: ‘The soft bigotry of low expectations.’ Indeed.

So the NRA via Wayne LaPierre, gets to have expensive, prime, uninterrupted airtime …all gratis..

GOP’s Tenney: Many mass murderers ‘end up being Democrats’
    02/22/18 08:40 AM
    By Steve Benen
For quite a while, the public could see a headline that read something like, “GOP lawmaker says something nutty,” and make certain assumptions about who the Republican was. More often than not, the quotes in question seemed to come from Michele Bachmann, Louie Gohmert, or Paul Broun.

But the torch has now been passed to a ridiculous new generation. Now, “GOP lawmaker says something nutty” can refer to any number of newer members of Congress. Take Rep. Claudia Tenney (R-N.Y.), for example.

Many mass murders are perpetrated by Democrats, New York Republican Rep. Claudia Tenney said Wednesday in a radio discussion on gun control following the recent mass shooting at a Florida high school.

“Obviously, there’s a lot of politics in it,” the congresswoman told the “Focus on the State Capitol” podcast hosted by Fred Dicker. “And it’s interesting that so many of these people that commit the mass murders end up being Democrats, but we don’t want to, the media doesn’t talk about that either.”
