Friday Open Thread | Something Positive

With everything going on in this country, I just decided to highlight positive stories. Positive things to take you into the weekend.

And, guess what?

Donald Glover Met the Girl Scout Who Went Viral for Rapping His Song. The Encounter Was Sufficiently Adorable.
By Raisa Bruner
March 1, 2018

Maybe Donald Glover calls his musical alter ego “Childish” Gambino for a reason: he certainly seems to connect with children. At least one child, anyway, Atlanta area Girl Scout Charity Joy Harrison. Harrison recently went viral for singing a cover of Glover’s Grammy-nominated hit song “Redbone” — but she switched up the lyrics to turn it into a sales pitch for those all-important cookies.

On an appearance with Stephen Colbert on Wednesday night, the Atlanta writer and actor addressed the phenomenon. “Childish Gambino’s for the children, man,” he explained. “It’s beautiful, but it’s also crazy to me. I never was like, I’ll make this and then one day a girl will sell Girl Scout cookies to it… It’s pretty great. I was touched.”

Even more touching? Colbert brought out the entrepreneurial young Harrison and her dad onto the show to meet Glover — and to give the actor a chance to satiate his cookie craving by ordering from her. But when he realized she still needed to sell 113 boxes to meet her order goals, he decided right then and there to complete the whole thing. “I’ll take ’em all,” he said. Colbert, Glover, and Harrison even all agreed on the correct flavor to order, too. Watch the heartwarming encounter above.

She apparently was rewarded for her husband’s endless buffoon butt-kissing in September 2017 with the ‘Director of Strategic Communications’ gig in the desecrated People House …and she’s clearly a right-wing mole and part of the Alt-Right brigade trying to take over control of the buffoon… First they flatter you…

She’s now angling to for Hope Hicks’ job …but they fail to get it… Hope is not replaceable..and her position is not for the taking..

I kept hearing the name Mercedes Schlapp being thrown around by the usual suspects…and it only just hit me today that it had to be CPAC weasel Matt Schlapp’s wife…

Same way Condoleeza Rice showed up on MSNBC yesterday to push for some guy named Stephen Biegun who is currently a VP at Ford motors, but worked under her in the Bush White House …to be the 3rd National Security Adviser once they push out H.R McMaster …

Meanwhile when even Nicole Wallace is calling Condoleeza Rice out for being such a shameless, cowardly, opportunistic weasel, you know how awful Condoleeza really is..

How on earth does any self-respecting decent person – least of all one who’s held sensitive positions in our government, declare with a straight face that because the buffoon has been ‘nice’ to her the times she’s met with him (including sneaking in through the back door pre-January 20, 2016, to angle for Tillerson for SoS in New York, and sneaking in to periodically meet with the buffoon now)… that his treasonous collusion with a hostile foreign entity and his appalling degradation of the highest office in the land, does not bother her… You could see whatever regard her fellow republican and Bush44 WH colleague had for her just fizzle away…

It bothered Nicole Wallace so badly, she raised it today..

Meanwhile, McMaster was sighted paddle-boarding in Southern California on Sunday … LOL..

    He also wants McMaster gone..

Murdoch used and threw his mentee Jared under the bus too..

One minute you’re the special swan and toast of the town …and the old greedy cows are paying homage, making pilgrimages to and fêting you … praising you and daughter-wife as young, smart, indispensable powerhouses…

Next, you’re the scum of the earth…and your wife – the daughter-wife, is cast as ‘dumb as a brick’…

The sudden need for privacy by the faux-‘reserved’ has more to do with the fear of their many secrets and lies being exposed..

Insider trading… (And Martha Stewart went to jail for far less..)

“…Billionaire investor and longtime Trump confidant Carl Icahn dumped $31.3 million of stock in a company heavily dependent on steel last week, just days before Trump announced plans to impose steep tariffs on steel imports.

In a little-noticed SEC filing submitted on February 22, 2018, Icahn disclosed that he systematically sold off nearly 1 million shares of Manitowoc Company Inc. Manitowoc is a “is a leading global manufacturer of cranes and lifting solutions” and, therefore, heavily dependent on steel to make its products.

The filing came just seven days before a White House event where Trump announced his intention to impose a 25 percent tariff on steel imports.

Trump’s announcement rattled the markets, with steel-dependent stocks hardest hit. Manitowoc stock plunged, losing about 6 percent of its value. Reuters attributed the drop to the fact that Manitowoc is a “major consumer of steel.” As of 10:20 a.m. Friday, the stock had lost an additional 6 percent, trading at $26.21.

Icahn was required to make the disclosure because of the large volume of his sale. The filing reveals that he began systematically selling the stock on February 12, when he was able to sell the stock for $32 to $34…”

WASHINGTON — Federal investigators are scrutinizing whether any of Jared Kushner’s business discussions with foreigners during the presidential transition later shaped White House policies in ways designed to either benefit or retaliate against those he spoke with, according to witnesses and other people familiar with the investigation.

Special counsel Robert Mueller’s team has asked witnesses about Kushner’s efforts to secure financing for his family’s real estate properties, focusing specifically on his discussions during the transition with individuals from Qatar and Turkey, as well as Russia, China and the United Arab Emirates, according to witnesses who have been interviewed as part of the investigation into possible collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign to sway the 2016 election.

Her name is Binti, and she is the first of the Himba people ever to be offered a place at Oomza University, the finest institution of higher learning in the galaxy. But to accept the offer will mean giving up her place in her family to travel between the stars among strangers who do not share her ways or respect her customs.

Knowledge comes at a cost, one that Binti is willing to pay, but her journey will not be easy. The world she seeks to enter has long warred with the Meduse, an alien race that has become the stuff of nightmares. Oomza University has wronged the Meduse, and Binti’s stellar travel will bring her within their deadly reach.

If Binti hopes to survive the legacy of a war not of her making, she will need both the the gifts of her people and the wisdom enshrined within the University, itself — but first she has to make it there, alive.

Hope Hicks’ time in the barrel may come soon. Special counsel Robert Mueller is reportedly aiming to interview the White House communications director as part of the Trump-Russia investigation. When he and his team of lawyers do so, they presumably will be mindful that the 29-year-old Hicks told one of the biggest whoppers of the 2016 campaign.

Two days after Donald Trump won the election, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said the Russian government had been in contact with the Trump campaign. “There were contacts,” he remarked. “We are doing this and have been doing this during the election campaign.” He noted that the Kremlin knew many of Trump’s closest allies and was in touch with them. “Obviously, we know most of the people from his [Trump’s] entourage.” he said. “Those people have always been in the limelight in the United States and have occupied high-ranking positions.” Ryabkov added that these contacts would continue.

The two most dangerous words in Trump’s vocabulary: ‘It’s easy’
    03/02/18 10:55 AM
    By Steve Benen
It’s not often that American presidents publicly praise international trade wars, which is probably why this overnight tweet from Donald Trump was seen as important across the globe.

“When a country (USA) is losing many billions of dollars on trade with virtually every country it does business with, trade wars are good, and easy to win. Example, when we are down $100 billion with a certain country and they get cute, don’t trade anymore-we win big. It’s easy!”

It’s important to understand that Donald Trump lacks any kind of meaningful understanding of what trade deficits are and what they mean. Trade wars are not, in fact, “good,” and this president’s economic illiteracy remains a serious national threat.

But for me, the two most important words in the presidential missive were actually the last two: “It’s easy!”

As a candidate for the nation’s highest office, despite lacking any experience in government or public service, Donald Trump repeatedly assured voters that every challenge has a simple solution, and the only reason policymakers hadn’t yet implemented these easy solutions is that the nation is run by idiots. Elect Trump, he said, and he’d “make possible every dream you’ve ever dreamed.”

As ACA support climbs, Hatch calls law’s supporters ‘dumbass people’
    03/02/18 10:01 AM
    By Steve Benen
The Kaiser Family Foundation has been conducting extensive public-opinion research on the Affordable Care Act since “Obamacare” became law, and the latest results are striking. KFF’s report this week found 54% of Americans now have a favorable opinion of the health care law – the strongest support to date.

It’s against this backdrop that Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) delivered remarks yesterday, suggesting those who support the ACA – which is to say, a majority of the country – are idiots.

“We also finally did away with the individual mandate tax that was established under that wonderful bill called ‘Obamacare,’ Hatch, who is retiring after this term, said while discussing the Republican tax overhaul.

“Now, if you didn’t catch on, I was being very sarcastic. That was the stupidest, dumbass bill that I’ve ever seen. Now, some of you may have loved it. If you do, you are one of the stupidest, dumbass people I’ve ever met.”

Trump’s new suggestion to address the opioid crisis: executions

Last weekend, Axios had a report that Donald Trump has privately expressed admiration for how Singapore deals with drug-trafficking offenses: the government executes those found guilty. The American president, the report said, has been “telling friends for months” that Singapore’s model is effective.

    …………………………………….

President Trump suggested that executing drug dealers could help solve the opioid crisis during a White House summit Thursday, an event the administration billed as a way to measure its progress in combating the nation’s drug problem.

“Some countries have a very tough penalty, the ultimate penalty, and they have much less of a drug problem than we do,” Trump said.

“How Lenders Are Turning Low-Level Courts into Dickensian ‘Debt Collection Mills’ ” </strong.
    https://theintercept.com/2018/02/28/criminalization-of-debt-imprisonment-aclu-report/

    Excerpt:

Federal law outlawed debt prisons in 1833, but lenders, landlords and even gyms and other businesses have found a way to resurrect the Dickensian practice. With the aid of private collection agencies, they file millions of lawsuits in state and local courts each year, winning 95 percent of the time. If a defendant fails to appear at post-judgement hearings known as “debtors’ examinations,” collectors can seek a warrant for contempt of court — even if the debtor didn’t realize they were being sued…

“A Pound of Flesh: the Criminalization of Private Debt,” the ACLU report, sheds light for the first time on the frequency of modern-day debt imprisonment, estimating that courts are issuing tens of thousands of arrest warrants each year for debtors owing as little as $30. Forty-four states permit judges to issue these warrants, often known as “body attachments,” in civil cases.

An ACLU report estimates courts are issuing tens of thousands of arrest warrants each year for debtors owing as little as $30.
“This has been a largely invisible problem, because the people it’s happening to typically don’t have lawyers and aren’t speaking out,” says Jennifer Turner, a human rights researcher at ACLU. “Many low-level courts have essentially become debt-collection mills.”

One in three Americans has a debt that’s been turned over to a private collection agency, and the ACLU found cases of warrants being issued over almost every kind of consumer debt—payday and auto loans, utility bills, even daycare fees. Many cases begin with an emergency expense that someone is unable to pay, sending them into a spiral of debt and imprisonment. The use of cash bail often compounds the problem; debtors languish in jail for up to two weeks, according to the report. In some jurisdictions, judges routinely set bail at the exact amount of the debt owed, then surrender it to the collector once paid.

The gun-control group Giffords has put out its annual scorecard, ranking states on their gun laws as the nation is again embroiled in debate about gun policy in the wake of a shooting that killed 17 people at a Florida high school on Valentine’s Day. The group gave 25 states — including Florida — an “F” rating.

The annual scorecard measures what lawyers at the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence consider “the relative strength or weakness” of gun laws in each state in 2017. “How would you like to be the real-life Black Panther character Erik Killmonger who retrieves artefacts that were taken from his country?
