Breaking News: Police confirm fourth explosion in Austin Texas

AUSTIN — Officials are responding to an explosion in Southwest Austin Sunday night, Austin police confirmed at a press conference.

This latest explosion is the fourth in the month of March alone.

Officials said they responded to the 4800 block of Dawn Song Drive in Southwest Austin at 8:32 p.m. March 18. Two men in their 20s were transported to South Austin Medical Center with serious injuries. At 11:30 p.m., hospital staff confirmed to KVUE’s Christy Millweard that the two men were in good condition. They’re expected to be okay.

Police are asking anyone in the immediate area — about a half-mile radius — to wait in their homes until at least daylight and follow instructions from officers if and when given.

Police said they are also working to clear a backpack found in the area.

They are asking anyone who sees a package to not even go near it and ask anyone who saw something suspicious to call 9-1-1 immediately.

Initially, Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services said officials received “unconfirmed reports” at 4721 Eagle Feather Drive at 8:32 p.m., where six patients were reported, “on the ground.”

This last confirmed explosion follows three others in the month of March — two of which were deadly. The first was reported on March 2 in Northeast Austin in the Harris Ridge neighborhood. Anthony Stephan House, 39, was critically injured after finding a package on his front doorstep. He died the same day at the hospital. The second explosion happened at a single-family home in Central East Austin on March 12. A 17-year-old boy, identified as Draylen Mason, was killed and a woman in her 40s was seriously injured. A few hours after the explosion that killed the teen, a 75-year-old woman, identified as Esperanza “Hope” Herrera, was injured in the third explosion in Southeast Austin after picking up a package left on her front doorstep. She remains in critical condition. Police said they believe the three explosions are tied to the same suspect(s).

Police have not confirmed if this fourth explosion involved a package or if it is connected to the previous three. Austin Interim Police Chief Brian Manley said he would provide more updates on the latest explosion Monday morning.

Officials with Regents School of Austin, located in the 3200 block of Travis County Circle, said they’re aware of the explosion and classes will be delayed by two hours so that Regent staff can perform a sweep of the area. Staff said they will let the community know updates on their website homepage, text, or email.

    Pray for my daughter’s safety. She delivers the mail and always have tons of packages to deliver. People are scared and could hurt innocent mail carriers.
