      Ametia, this was a difficult video to view. The resistance and closed ears of the two young people in the front row (guy at the left and guy at the right) broke down the dialogue. They want to blame instead of help, to shut down rather than to understand, and to stereotype and profile instead of understanding the individuals that make up the community.

      It is what we are seeing in verbal encounters out in the larger world. I say “verbal encounters” because we do not see conversations where there is enough give and take, where there is open-mindedness, and where there is a willingness to learn about other people’s daily lives and needs.

    US President Donald Trump decided Tuesday to end the protected status of thousands of Liberian migrants to the United States and gave them a year to leave the country.

    It’s the latest of similar moves, after more than 250,000 Salvadorans, Haitians and Nicaraguans lost their protected status under an administration which has made cracking down on immigration a priority.

    In 1991, when the West African country was in the grip of civil war, some Liberians living in the US were given “temporary protected status” to allow them to remain in safety.

    Then in 1999 approximately 10,000 of them were made eligible for “deferred enforced departure,” or DED, by then-president Bill Clinton, allowing them to continue to build new lives.

    Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama have periodically renewed the DED status, but Trump has now decided to allow it to expire, deeming Liberia safe for returnees.

    Trump has taken a tough stance on immigration in general and, in reported private conversations, an even tougher stance on Africans from what he has reportedly deemed “shithole countries.”

    The latest grace period expires on March 31, but Trump said in a letter to the Department of Homeland Security that he would accord the Liberians a 12-month “wind-down” period to prepare their departure.

    Reyna Montoya: Growing up as an undocumented immigrant in the US, I wasn’t able to complete certain very simple tasks without worrying about the tremendous outcome it could have for my family. I remember that in the 12th grade, something as simple as signing up for dual-enrolment meant that I had to pay three times more than any other of my classmates, since I didn’t have a social security number. It meant being left out from getting my driving permit and being unable to share those experiences with my peers.

    It meant not having the opportunity to pay my respects and bury my nana, and seeing my dad cry because he had to choose whether to leave the country and bury the person who raised him, or stay in the US to raise his children. It meant not being able to get a job as soon as I graduated from college, or furthering my education right away. It also meant that I had to figure out a lot of things on my own, or find mentors to support me. Due to these challenges, however, I was able to be more creative, and make my own pathways where there weren’t any created for me.

    MS: You founded Aliento to support the undocumented youths and children of immigrants living in the United States. How can art and education bring about a better America?

    RM: Art is a tool that allows us to express our feelings as well as to re-imagine ways of seeing the world. Art can be healing and empowering for anyone who is willing to take a chance to express their feelings and emotions.

    Education is key – we at Aliento believe that we need to create spaces where we are educating one another not only in the current political climate, but in how the system works, so as to improve the quality of life in our communities.

      Keep your eyes on social media outlets ALSO TOO!

      Our ability to share ideas and information is powerful and poses a threat to our FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHTS.

      While what Facebook is being scrutinized for is REAL, information sharing is still a very powerful tool for us to spread the word.

      Folk have to take responsibility for what they post on these sites. And honestly, any fake news that was posted to sway folks one way or the other, has very little to do with how people think & believe from jump. Folks have the propensity towards accepting certain beliefs already coded in their DNA.

      Currently, Twitter is a main tool a majority of Black folks use to communicate their ideas, opinions, etc. Let’s stay WOKE folks. Don’t allow the sytem to be undermined.
