    Hopefully, folks don’t start to buy into all this minimizing and pooh-poohing of ..and endless disclaimers about how ‘nobody cares about sex, cheating and adultery’ …and this whole rubbish about how politicians and other public servants get a pass for their adulterous behavior..

    They don’t..

    It speaks to character in ways that very little else can..

    And there will be no minimizing of it..

    DHS secretary declines to explain Trump’s ‘breeding’ tweet

    President Donald Trump’s Homeland Security secretary declined to explain what the President meant by “breeding concept” in a tweet Wednesday morning, saying he was calling attention to a “very serious problem.”

    Asked here during a visit to the border fence replacement project what Trump meant and whether the tweet had racial overtones, Kirstjen Nielsen said she couldn’t speak “to a particular meaning of the tweet.”

    “Generally from where I stand, we have immigration laws, we need to enforce them no matter who is breaking those laws,” Nielsen told CNN in an exclusive interview. “I think overall he’s talking about a very serious problem that we have with sanctuary cities who are turning their back on federal laws and making it that much more difficult and dangerous for us to do our jobs to protect the American people.”

    Trump tweeted Wednesday morning about California, which has passed a state law limiting cooperation with federal immigration enforcement.

    “There is a Revolution going on in California. Soooo many Sanctuary areas want OUT of this ridiculous, crime infested & breeding concept. Jerry Brown is trying to back out of the National Guard at the Border, but the people of the State are not happy. Want Security & Safety NOW!” Trump tweeted.

      He hears these buzz words routinely used by some in his inner circle, and immediately co-opts them and begins to use them himself to try to sound ‘smarter’, ‘tougher’ – or as if he’s actually well-informed on the matter at hand, or in the know..

      This is just so sad.

      I’ve been thinking about the 911 call that went like this:

      “Hi, I have two gentlemen in my café that are refusing to make a purchase or leave,” the manager says. “I’m at the Starbucks at 18th and Spruce.”
      “Alright, police will be out as soon as possible,” the dispatcher replies.

      I think it is interesting that the dispatcher doesn’t ask any questions.

      Is the city of Philadelphia so flush with revenue that they can so easily and without justification dispatch cops to a coffee shop where a couple of “gentlemen” are sitting and not ordering?

      This is a false alarm and STARBUCKS SHOULD BE FINED!

      The dispatcher should know that people sit in Starbucks without ordering or they wait to order if they are meeting someone. Why did the dispatcher so readily agree to send a cop? Is that the agreement between Starbucks and the police?

      In addition to everything else that is wrong here, taxpayers should be asking questions.

        That 911 call is very suspicious. I’ve heard 911 calls on Dateline where the dispatchers ask questions about shootings in progress. But two guys sitting at a table without ordering requires an immediate police response, no questions asked. Very interesting…

        Yeah, this needs to stop. Starbucks got caught. The police got caught. They need to start from that point and fix this. People are more forgiving when there is honesty.

    Paul Ryan could get a pension of $84,930—here’s how that compares to most people

    House Speaker Paul Ryan announced that he will retire at the end of his term in January, giving up his prominent position and salary of $223,500 a year. But that doesn’t mean the 48-year-old will have to start pinching pennies.

    When he turns 50, he’s likely entitled to a pension plan that Vanity Fair describes as “a golden parachute.” If he is enrolled in the program offered to Congress members, the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS), he could receive $84,930 a year, assuming he sticks it out through January.

    For most of America, by contrast, pension plans are only a memory: In total, only 23 percent of workers have one now, according to the most recent analysis from the Pension Rights Center, while in 2016 “pension benefits provided income to nearly one third of older adults.”

    Many U.S. employers have shifted away from offering pensions in favor of encouraging personal retirement accounts. But 401(k)s, which in any event are only available to some, have proven to be an insufficient alternative, leading some to conclude that “the grand 401(k) experiment has been a failure.” Overall, Americans between the ages of 55 and 64 have a median of $120,000 saved for retirement, according to a recent Bankrate survey. That’s only 12 percent of the $1 million experts recommend you have to count on once you’ve stopped working.

    When a Harriet Tubman scholar found out in 2016 that the abolitionist she studied for decades was going to be the new face of the $20 bill, she cried.

    “Here you have an African American woman, formerly enslaved who fought and struggled her whole life for freedom and equality.” Kate Larson said.

    But Larson and others eager to withdraw Tubmans from the bank may have to wait longer than expected. Two years ago this week, Treasury Secretary Jack Lew announced redesigns for the $20, $10, and $5 bills that would honor civil rights and women’s rights icons: Tubman, Alice Paul, and Marian Anderson. Lew said the new note designs would debut by 2020, 100 years after women gained the right to vote.

    But now the Trump administration is putting the plan on the backburner, according to the Treasury department.

    Judge holds Kansas’ Kobach in contempt in voting rights case

    It’s been several years since Kansas Republicans first imposed new voting restrictions on state residents, including requirements that Kansans show proof of citizenship when registering. The ACLU is challenging the measure in federal court, while Secretary of State Kris Kobach (R) defends them.

    That is, of course, the same Kobach who’s championed voter-suppression techniques at the national level, and helped lead Donald Trump’s ridiculous voting commission, which recently ended in failure.

    It’s safe to say this latest endeavor isn’t going especially well, either. A federal judge yesterday held Kobach in contempt of court, and the Washington Post did a nice job explaining why.

    U.S. District Judge Julie Robinson issued a preliminary injunction in 2016 blocking the [Kansas law related to voter registrations] and asked that the registrations of some 18,000 people whose materials had been held be notified with a postcard confirming their registration and polling place, as other voters are in Kansas.

    But the ACLU recently charged that many voters had failed to receive the postcard…. Robinson sided with the ACLU’s January motion to hold Kobach, Kansas’s secretary of state, in contempt for the failures, as the court had ordered him previously to comply.

    In her ruling, in which she said twice that Kobach acted “disingenuously,” Robinson wrote that she found “clear and convincing evidence” that he had disobeyed the preliminary injunction.

    Poll: Cruz, O’Rourke locked in tight race in Texas

    Sen. Ted Cruz may be headed for a Texas showdown this November.

    The Lone Star State Republican is locked in a statistical dead heat with Democratic Rep. Beto O’Rourke, according to a new Quinnipiac Poll released Wednesday. The poll found Cruz leading O’Rourke 47 to 44 percent, within the poll’s 3.6 percent margin of error.

    Democrats have been hopeful that Texas’ changing demographics will soon give them a shot at winning a Senate seat in the traditionally red state. And Cruz, a firebrand conservative and 2016 presidential hopeful, is a top target.

    The poll found O’Rouke leading among independent (51-37%), Hispanic (51-33%), and black (78-18%) voters. Cruz leads among male (51-40%) and white (59-34%) voters, as well as those over the age of 65 (50-43%).

    There was some unexpected drama on the Senate floor yesterday, when Donald Trump’s choice to lead NASA, Rep. Jim Bridenstine (R-Okla.), didn’t have the votes to advance. Sens. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) were out, and Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) initially balked, leaving the chamber tied, 49 to 49.

    Ordinarily, Vice President Mike Pence would break the tie, but he was 1,000 miles away in Florida.

    Eventually, Senate GOP leaders made some private concessions to Flake; the Arizonan changed his vote; and the drama came to an end. All of which makes this a fine time to take a closer look the man who’ll soon lead NASA thanks to the unanimous support of Senate Republicans. Vox had this report yesterday on Bridenstine – the first politician who’ll oversee the space agency.

    As a politician, Bridenstine has hedged on climate change, an issue NASA scientists study and track in many different ways. During his confirmation hearing in November, Bridenstine agreed that humans are the driving force behind climate change, but he would not agree with the assertion that human activity is the primary cause of it. It’s an odd position to hold as the leader of an agency that provides some of the most comprehensive data on climate change in the world.

    NASA has a staff of 17,000 and a budget of nearly $19 billion (not to mention the numerous contractors it works with). Bridenstine’s experience of managing a museum in Tulsa pales in comparison to the enormous complexity of NASA.

    Questions about Bridenstine’s qualifications grew louder when the Daily Beast reported this week that when the Oklahoma Republican led a space museum in Tulsa, it suffered hefty financial losses, and “some of the losses involved the use of the non-profit’s resources to benefit a company that Bridenstine simultaneously co-owned and in which he’d invested substantial sums of his own money.”

    Trump makes some dubious assumptions about farmers’ partisan allegiance

    Earlier this year, Donald Trump spoke at American Farm Bureau’s annual convention, where the president strutted like a man who assumed he was among adoring fans. “Oh, are you happy you voted for me,” Trump said, straying from the prepared text on his trusted teleprompter. “You are so lucky that I gave you that privilege.”

    But the Republican’s bond with farmers frayed in the months that followed. As Trump picked dangerous fights over trade, it’s farmers who are positioned to feel the adverse consequences. The president admitted as much at a White House event last week, conceding, “I tell you, our farmers are great patriots. These are great patriots. They understand that they’re doing this for the country.”

    In other words, Trump sees farmers suffering, but he assumes they won’t mind – because they’re effectively taking one for the team.

    Those assumptions may be wrong. The New York Times had this report out of Casselton, North Dakota.

    Stern warnings are coming from all over the Midwest about the political peril for Republicans in Mr. Trump’s recent course of action, in which the tariffs he slapped on foreign competitors invited retaliatory tariffs on American agriculture. Soybeans are America’s second largest export to China, and that country’s proposed 25 percent duties on the crop would hit hardest in states like Iowa, Kansas and Minnesota – where there are highly competitive House races – as well as Indiana, Missouri and North Dakota, whose Senate contests may determine control of the chamber.

    By proposing the tariffs, Mr. Trump has moved to fulfill a central promise of his campaign: confronting those countries he believes are undermining American industry. Yet his goal – to revive the steel and aluminum industries, thereby aiding the Rust Belt states that were crucial to his election – has effectively prioritized one element of the Trump political coalition over another, larger bloc of voters. That larger segment, the farm belt, is essential to Republican success in the midterm elections and beyond.
