Beyond Starbucks: How Racism Shapes Customer Service
By Alexandra C. Feldberg and Tami Kim
    April 20, 2018

    SNIP
The manager at Starbucks called the police with the claim that the two men were “refusing to make a purchase.” The manager did not believe that they were customers.
Our research suggests that this belief — that a nonwhite person cannot or will not be a legitimate customer — can indeed worsen discrimination in service delivery. In a follow-up study, we emailed nearly 2,000 hotels and made a similar inquiry about local restaurants. But this time, in addition to varying the race of the inquirers, we varied whether they made clear their intention to stay at the hotel. Indeed, making customer status explicit helped reduce discrimination against minority people. These results are in line with the recent incident at Starbucks: We see that service workers do not apply the rule that every person is a potential customer deserving the same level of service.

  11. Uh oh….. but I have to travel on Rock Prairie Road today………….

“All major intersections along the route will be closed as the motorcade proceeds through College Station. The intersections that will be closed will begin at Highway 6 at Rock Prairie Road to Texas Avenue at George Bush Drive. Once the motorcade begins traveling on George Bush Drive, all major intersections will be blocked until the motorcade reaches Barbara Bush Drive”.

    Good Morning Everyone 😄😄😄

  15. Good morning, everyone!

My neighbor was on the way to meet up with her daughter to pick out a wedding dress and she was killed 6 minutes after she left the house. A teenager ran a stop sign and T-boned her SUV killing her. So incredibly sad. Prayers to the family. I made some spaghetti and garlic toast for the family to eat. Our community is so sad.

    • Ametia says:

Good Morning, SG2. You beat me to it this morning with the post. THANK YOU!

Life is indeed short and precious. Prayers to the family. You’re a “GOOD neighbor.”

Your service is a gift in times of sorrow & grief.

    • rikyrah says:

      That is so sad.
      How is your son-in-law?

    • Liza says:

      Good morning, SG2 and Everyone,

Good Lord, that is so sad about your neighbor, SG2. It’s good there are neighbors like you to help the family through this. It doesn’t happen that way in my current neighborhood, people barely notice each other.

It’s good to hear that your son-in-law is doing good.

      Hang in there…

      • Ametia says:

Liza, the fact that SG2 shares her neighborly kindness, gives us all hopes that there is still some CIVILITY in this country.

      • Liza, we country folks cook up food, take cakes, drinks, paper plates, napkins etc to families that have suffered a death in their family. My sis would bake home-made cakes. She’s sick now and can’t do that anymore but people could count on getting one of her delicious cakes.

      • Liza, we pull our cars to the side of the road whenever there is a funeral procession taking place. If folks are outside working, they stop until funeral procession passes through. Occasionally there may be some person who break the norms but folks frown 😡 on them. Respect the dead!

      • Liza says:

I really miss those traditions. When my father died, the house was full of neighbors and relatives and church people within a couple of hours after the news was out. Everyone brought something. I haven’t seen anything like that since leaving the South.

    • yahtzeebutterfly says:

I am so sad to learn about your dear neighbor’s death. It is so heartbreaking.

You are such a good, kind neighbor helping her family through this tragedy.

      • It’s such a small thing to do for someone who was always helping people. The family is good people. Although there are some racist folks in this town, these people are good, down to earth people who give their all to help others in need.

      • Ametia says:

SO TRUE, Sg2. In the END, it’s all about our families & a few TRUE FRIENDS. We’re ALL we’ve got.
