Monday Open Thread | Shania Twain says she would’ve voted for Trump, later apologizes

Dear Shania Twain,

That don’t impress me much….. You said what you said! Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaketh.

Seeing how she’s a Canadian citizen, Shania Twain couldn’t vote for Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election. But the country crossover star says she would have cast her ballot for President Trump.

“I would have voted for him because, even though he was offensive, he seemed honest,” Twain says in a new interview published Sunday by The Guardian. “Do you want straight or polite? Not that you shouldn’t be able to have both. If I were voting, I just don’t want (BS). I would have voted for a feeling that it was transparent. And politics has a reputation of not being that, right?”

By Sunday evening, Twain had backpedaled from her remarks, apologizing for her “awkward” answer and saying the question caught her off guard.

“I am passionately against discrimination of any kind and hope it’s clear from the choices I have made, and the people I stand with, that I do not hold any common moral beliefs with the current President,” she tweeted. “My limited understanding was that the President talked to a portion of America like an accessible person they could relate to, as he was NOT a politician.

“My answer was awkward, but certainly should not be taken as representative of my values nor does it mean I endorse him. I make music to bring people together. My path will always be one of inclusivity, as my history shows.”

PENNSYLVANIA JUDGE CALLS ICE TO ARREST COUPLES ON THEIR WEDDING DAYS
BY CHANTAL DA SILVA ON 4/20/18 AT 11:40 AM

Alexander Parker and Krisha Schmick didn’t want much fanfare on their wedding day; the small Camp Hill courthouse in Pennsylvania would do. The high school sweethearts were giddy as they walked into the building for their appointment, eager to exchange vows.

“We talked back in high school about getting married and finally we were going to do it,” Krisha told Newsweek. “We were all dressed up and everything.”

The couple’s excitement was cut short, however, when the judge that had been meant to marry them called Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents on the pair instead, refusing to believe Alexander, 22, was living in the United States legally.

Alexander, who was born in Guatemala, but had been adopted and brought to the U.S. at eight months old, said he knew something was wrong when courtroom staff took fifteen minutes to check his Guatemalan identification card after only taking moments to check his then-fiance’s.

“I didn’t have my Green Card yet, so I gave them the I.D. I had been given and they took it back to the judge and next thing I know a constable is coming out and telling me he needs to detain me because I.D. didn’t look real,” Alexander told Newsweek.

This needs to stop! So upsetting!!! We have to be more than onlookers. I have made and passed out support DACA buttons at rallies, but I need to do more. Maybe, I will start writing editorial letters to major newspapers. I think we need to end the greed in Congress as far as lobbyist money that pushes anti-immigrant agendas. But, how do we do it?

I watched the video and am horrified.

It reminded me of what police officer Eric Casebolt did to fifteen-year-old Dajerria Becton as he restrained her at the McKinney pool party in Texas.

I want to see the various women’s groups and associations in our country speak up for Chikesia against the way she was treated by the police.

Trump’s bold new idea: suing the Democratic National Committee
    04/23/18 08:00 AM—UPDATED 04/23/18 08:39 AM
    By Steve Benen

Not long after Richard Nixon and his political operation launched their Watergate scheme, the Democratic National Committee launched a civil suit against the Republican president. Last week, in a remarkable historical echo, the DNC filed a similar lawsuit against the Russian government, Donald Trump’s campaign, and WikiLeaks, alleging they coordinated to disrupt the 2016 campaign.
The judge in the case, as luck would have it, was a former Watergate prosecutor.

Not surprisingly, the president, who’s already the subject of a criminal investigation, heard about the civil case, and on Friday afternoon, Trump shared his initial reaction:

“Just heard the Campaign was sued by the Obstructionist Democrats. This can be good news in that we will now counter for the DNC Server that they refused to give to the FBI, the Debbie Wasserman Schultz Servers and Documents held by the Pakistani mystery man and Clinton Emails.”

To the extent that reality still has any meaning, nearly all of this was nonsense. The DNC, for example, didn’t refuse to cooperate with the FBI. For that matter, DNC officials aren’t in Congress, and therefore can’t be “obstructionists.” (The original version of Trump’s tweet also referred to Wendy Wasserman Schultz, instead of Debbie.)

But the words that stood out were, “we will now counter.”
