Wednesday Open Thread | Democrats in New York flipped a New York Assembly seat

Democrats in New York flipped a New York Assembly seat on Tuesday, winning a seat that has been in GOP hands for nearly four decades.

Democrat Steve Stern, a former Suffolk County legislator, beat out Janet Smitelli (R) for AD-10, a Long Island seat, with 59 percent of the vote, according to Daily Kos.

The district has been represented by a Republican since 1978.

Former presidents Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama both won the district in the last two presidential elections, but the 18-point margin in Tuesday’s election is indicative of a growing blue wave in the area.
New York Democrats were optimistic about Stern’s ability to flip the seat due to the high energy of Democratic voters, and the fact that there are about 6,000 more registered Democrats than Republicans in the district, according to the Times-Union.

Stern was backed by two major labor organizations, which his campaign also saw as a key to encouraging higher turnout during a special election.

Democrats in the state also saw a small victory in the Senate, winning two open seats to gain the majority of the Senate, but not control due to a Democratic state senator who caucuses with the GOP.

This is my neighborhood today. Teachers and supporters of the AZ teachers’ walkout were at every intersection on Broadway, a major thoroughfare.

You know fam, it’s selfish, self-loathing, self-interested, narcissistic idiots with a megaphone, like Kanye West – that embolden white supremacists, and help harm black folks in this incredibly racist country ..

    • eliihass says:

      Yup..

      Just ask Camille Cosby..

Attacked and maligned and ostracized – and offered no pity, sympathy, defense, or kind thought – even when she lost another child…And only because she wouldn’t publicly speak out ..or side with a bunch of women – including some who chose to sneak around with, and had consensual affairs with her philandering husband of 50+ years..

Even as folks are all busy playing save the ‘damsel’ for the complicit mistress turned 3rd wife of the adulterous buffoon …casting her as ‘sympathetic’ ‘poor victim’, and offering up every ridiculous defense and excuse – ‘perhaps she’s scared, and being abused’ , oh, her ‘poor, poor son’…to gin up sympathy and to absolve her – and to conveniently distance her now, from a notorious conman she eyes wide open hooked up with while he was still married to his 2nd wife.. And has had no qualms for years – and even up till this minute, enjoying the ill-gotten spoils of his various dubious dealings.. including stiffing working folk and stealing from widows..

    • eliihass says:

She’s an inconsequential, self-serving, opportunistic idiot… A random, unscrupulous, greedy nobody, trading her black face and hollow nothingness, for a hardly impressive paying gig as black cover for white supremacists – who can barely tolerate her, absolutely loathe and look down on her, but who will selectively use her on occasion to defend, validate, gloss over and fake-absolve themselves of their in your face hate and racism..

      Yup..

      And there you have it..

The buffoon squatting the People’s House, is the result of racist white folks needing to reassert their supremacy…and puppeteer Putin and his cohorts tapping into those racist sentiments, in addition to Krompomat and of course, owning years of the loans of the financially and morally bankrupt buffoon..

This is a great article on African American women’s contributions to the civil rights movement:

“The Selfless Servant Leadership of the African-American Women of the Civil-Rights Movement
These women didn’t stand on ceremony; they accepted the risks of activism and fought for worlds where others might have freedoms that they themselves would never enjoy. ”

  12. I need to get this off my chest. I’m so damn livid at Harry Reid…..

When Harry Reid was majority leader, there were things he could have done to help PBO’s agenda but he didn’t. Fugg him. He need to go the hell away.

    • Ametia says:

You go on ahead and VENT, SG2.

    • Liza says:

I think Reid is wrong about impeachment. Richard Nixon resigned because of the threat of impeachment, conviction, and removal from office. His resignation was best for the country.

The same is true for Trump.

Macaroni ain’t shit either. Ask him about his thoughts on Benny Netanyahu and his views and plans to cleanse all Africans from Israel.

  13. Harry Reid’s fuckery………..Democrats like him ain’t worth a damn. They’re always covering for each other.

Harry Reid says Trump is damaging the country but warns against impeachment

  14. I’m so damn ticked at Harry Reid. Always covering for each other. He says Trump is destroying the country, decimating institutions but don’t impeach him because it’s unpleasant. So the country should accept what Trump is doing? Can you believe this ISH? They’re not going to feel the wrath of Trump’s hate. His hate is no risk to their life, healthcare or separation from their families. Harry Reid can go straight to hell.

      Good Morning, Rikyrah and Vitaminlover!

SG2, how is your son-in-law doing? It is so good to know that he is home from the hospital. Please know that I continue to pray for his speedy and complete recovery.
I am sure that your chicken soup and cornbread helped him get need strength back after all of those blood transfusions and surgery.

      • Good morning, everyone. Son in law is doing well. He’s moving a bit slow and taking medication for the pain. His grandmother is with him helping out. He enjoyed the soup. Hope it makes him feel better.
