Monday Open Thread | Joy Ann Reid: Class Act

Joy Ann Reid from her show on Saturday:

I’ll make it clear – I support Joy Ann Reid. There are those who want to silence her for the following reasons:
1. She’s smart.
2. She’s smart and a woman.
3. She’s smart and a BLACK woman.
4. She pulls no punches.
5. She is one of the most vocal critics of Dolt45 and the Republicans.

So, yes, I believe there are those who have wanted to run her off the air and take away her career. To silence her clear and powerful voice.

Got your back, Joy Ann Reid.

Yep.

Pretty sure that already happened. Micro-targeting social media gives 45GOP a plausible win, but doesn’t guarantee outcome. Hacking the machines/tabulation serves DOES. Where’s the forensic code audit of 2016 w/data trails starting in WI/PA/MI?

Nursing schools are rejecting thousands of applicants — in the middle of a nursing shortage
POSTED 10:05 AM, APRIL 30, 2018, BY CNN WIRES

There’s an acute nursing shortage in the United States, but schools are turning away thousands of qualified applicants as they struggle to expand class size and hire more teachers for nursing programs.

In America, experienced nurses are retiring at a rapid clip, and there aren’t enough new nursing graduates to replenish the workforce. At the same time, the nation’s population is aging and requires more care.

“It’s really a catch 22 situation,” said Robert Rosseter, spokesman for the American Association of Colleges of Nursing.

“There’s tremendous demand from hospitals and clinics to hire more nurses,” he said. “There’s tremendous demand from students who want to enter nursing programs, but schools are tapped out.”

There are currently about three million nurses in the United States. The country will need to produce more than one million new registered nurses by 2022 to fulfill its health care needs, according to the American Nurses Association estimates.

    ………………………………………

Jane Kirschling, dean of the University of Maryland School of Nursing in Baltimore, said her school admits new students in the undergraduate program twice a year.

“We’re averaging 200 applications each time for 55 slots,” she said. “So we’re turning away one student for every student we accept.”

She said the nursing profession has surged in popularity for a few reasons. “Nursing offers an entry-level living wage with which you can support a family,” said Kirschling.

There’s built-in flexibility and mobility. “You can work three 12-hour shifts and get four days off,” she said. And nurses aren’t locked into a specific location, employer or specialty for the rest of their lives. “There’s tremendous growth opportunity,” said Kirschling.

Think Manhattan DA Cy Vance Goes Easy on the Rich? Look at How He Prosecutes the Poor.
    By Tom Robbins

To hear the media tell it, Manhattan district attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. is soft on white-collar crime. First came the news that an attorney for Ivanka Trump and Donald Trump Jr. had arranged a fund-raiser for Vance after he refused to prosecute them for fraud. Then there was Vance’s decision not to file sexual-assault charges against Harvey Weinstein, even though police had caught the Hollywood mogul on tape confessing to the crime. Last month, spurred by a story in New York, Governor Andrew Cuomo ordered the state attorney general to investigate Vance’s handling of the case. The incidents have cost the DA: During his uncontested election for a third term in November, 10 percent of voters were so fed up with him that they went to the trouble of writing in someone whose name wasn’t Cy Vance.

But all the attention on Vance’s treatment of the rich and powerful has obscured a more surprising aspect of his record: The DA, who styles himself a progressive reformer, is actually far more punitive toward poor and minority defendants than his counterparts in other boroughs. According to a report issued last year by a special commission on Rikers Island, Vance’s office was responsible for almost 38 percent of the city’s jail population in 2016, even though it handled just 29 percent of all criminal cases in New York. “No other borough comes close,” the report concluded. Brooklyn — despite having a million more residents than Manhattan — accounted for only 22 percent of those behind bars.

Vance’s selectively tough approach to law and order continued last year. Even as the DA supported the growing movement to close Rikers, his office continued to fill the jail at a far higher rate than other boroughs’ DAs. As of December, according to data published by the Department of Correction, a third of the city’s inmates — including 2,251 at Rikers — had been sent there from Manhattan.

That parade of imprisonment is compounded by Vance’s onerous demands for bail. In 2016, the DA’s own statistics show, his office detained 17 percent of those it charged with misdemeanors or minor infractions — anything from smoking a joint to jumping a turnstile. Only Staten Island, with one-seventh as many petty crimes as Manhattan, matched that level of incarceration.
