Thursday Open Thread | Mueller issues grand jury subpoena to Roger Stone adviser

Special counsel Robert Mueller has subpoenaed a social media specialist who previously worked for Trump campaign adviser Roger Stone, according to a report.

A lawyer for social media and Twitter expert Jason Sullivan told Reuters that two subpoenas were delivered last week to Sullivan’s lawyers.

The report says the subpoenas seem to indicate that Mueller’s investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election is partly focusing on Stone and his communications with WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

Stone has made contradicting statements about whether he knew in advance that WikiLeaks was going to publish a trove of hacked Democratic National Committee (DNC) emails.

He appeared before the Senate Intelligence Committee last year and denied collusion between those close to Trump and Russia during the 2016 presidential campaign.

“I am aware of no evidence whatsoever of collusion by the Russian state or anyone in the Trump campaign,” he told reporters in September.

President Trump has also denied collusion between his campaign and Russia, often referring to Mueller’s probe as a witch hunt.

Sullivan told Reuters that he worked as Stone’s chief strategist on the Trump campaign, and currently is in charge of Cyphoon.com.

Sullivan told Reuters that he helped Stone and the Trump campaign create Twitter “swarms” that would boost social media support for the candidate. One strategy document obtained by Reuters that Sullivan prepared referenced “The Age of Weaponized Social Media.”

Reuters cited an Election Day tweet from Trump, which garnered more than 343,000 retweets.

Sullivan told the outlet that swarm from that tweet contributed to overcoming a surge in pro-Clinton social media posts.

Mueller has subpoenaed Sullivan to appear before a grand jury on May 18 and to turn over documents and electronic information.

  1. I got this notification too. Why send me a reminder? I haven’t been harassing anyone. Those mofos come for me and then I tell them how the cow ate the cabbage. Some right wing nut must have reported me. If I broke any rules, they’d have suspended me. Fuck them.

Thanks for this clip, Liza. I’m ROTFLMBO at this lame-behind coward Aaron Schlossberg. He was a “mighty strong man” when he was running his mouth, insulting other Americans in that restaurant, but now, he’s the world’s biggest ”victim.”

ICE arrested a dreamer, revoked his DACA status, placed him in detention, and attempted to deport him, claiming he was a gang member. A federal judge just ruled that ICE was lying—brazenly, intentionally, repeatedly, and illegally. https://t.co/U2u25mzUqQ @Slate

ICE agents tried to extract a false confession from Ramirez, demanding that he “admit” he was in a gang. When he refused, ICE pointed to his tattoo, which said “La Paz—BCS,” his birthplace in Baja California Sur.

That, ICE said, proves you’re “definitely a gang member.”

McConnell May Cancel August Recess to Keep Democrats From Going Home to Campaign
    By Ed Kilgore

The election-year August recess is a sacred institution in Congress, instituted initially because of the capital city’s unbearable summer weather, and maintained in the air-conditioning era to let members of Congress go home and pound the pavement in pursuit of reelection. On rare occasions it is canceled or curtailed because accomplishing some particular legislative goal or at least looking busy is considered as valuable politically as time back home.

At first blush this might seem to be the reason 16 Republican senators are urging Mitch McConnell to cancel this year’s August recess. And indeed, that’s what they are saying in a letter to their leader, as the Washington Post reports:
    ………………………………………………………

There’s a different reason Republicans might want, and that McConnell might strongly consider, a recess cancellation: there are ten Democratic senators up this year from states carried by Donald Trump in 2016. There is just one Republican incumbent up this year from a state carried by Hillary Clinton. Yes, there are two other highly vulnerable GOP-held Senate seats at stake this fall, in Arizona and Tennessee. But they are held by lame ducks Jeff Flake and Bob Corker, respectively.

Keeping these Democratic senators off the campaign trail in August is a bankable asset for the GOP. And even if it doesn’t happen, the threat of making it happen will have value in negotiations with Democrats over items like appropriations and confirmations. As Slate’s Jim Newell observes:

  13. Manhattan Attorney Aaron Schlossberg, people….. He need to be disbarred & arrested for harassment.

This woman learned to do this by listening to a white supremacist podcast. I read about the podcast yesterday. The couple that operates the podcast suggested that whites get blacks and other minorities in trouble with the police by shouting, “Gun!” repeatedly whether the targeted individual has a gun or not. These tools know that if a white female, in particular, yells, “Gun!” the police will show up and the targeted person will end up either gunned down where s/he stands or behind bars.

      • OMG! So evil. They want police to shoot down innocent people. These folks need to be locked up for this because someone is going to end up losing their life behind this bald face lie. They already know police show up on the scene to kill black people.

Calling people animals is sinful. Every human being has infinite dignity. Moreover, this is the same kind of language that led to the extermination of Jews (“vermin”) in Germany and of Tutsi (“cockroaches”) in Rwanda. This kind of language cannot be normalized. @West of the Rockies: To me the bigger story today is this Ronan Farrow report. Apparently Congresswoman Waters had a tip about this last year and wrote to Secretary Mnuchin about it this past January. From the letter she sent Mnuchin:

Have you ever directed, or has any other Trump Administration official, Trump campaign official or Trump family member called on you to direct U.S. Treasury officials or staff members to obscure, destroy, or withhold information implicating the President, Trump campaign officials, Trump family members or his associates?

Seems like Auntie Maxine was onto something.
And, she never got a response back….Hmmmmmm….
