Tuesday Open Thread | Mueller moves to revoke Manafort’s pretrial release over witness tampering

Special counsel Robert Mueller said in a court filing on Monday that President Trump’s former campaign chairman Paul Manafort attempted to tamper with potential witnesses while on pretrial release.

Mueller’s team has asked the court to revoke or revise Manafort’s release conditions, including his bond and house arrest, in the wake of the filing, which was first reported by Reuters.

FBI agent Brock Domin said in the filing that Manafort attempted to contact witnesses via phone call, text and encrypted messages to two people from “The Hapsburg Group,” which Manafort had worked with to lobby for Ukrainian interests.
Domin said that Manfort’s attempts at contact were “in an effort to influence their testimony and to otherwise conceal evidence,” and that the probe into the matter was still ongoing.

The special counsel’s office hit Manafort with a 12-count indictment last year, which included conspiracy against the United States, tax fraud and money laundering.

Manafort has pleaded not guilty to the charges, which are not directly related to his work for the Trump campaign.

His former business associate, Rick Gates, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy against the United States and one count of making a false statement to the FBI agents investigating Russian interference earlier this year as part of a plea deal with Mueller’s team.

Former national security adviser Michael Flynn, along with former Trump campaign adviser George Papadopoulos and Dutch attorney Alex van der Zwaan have also pleaded guilty in the case.

A grand jury also indicted 13 Russian nationals and three Russian companies earlier this year for allegedly meddling in the 2016 election.

Trump has spoken out about Manafort in recent days, slamming the FBI and Department of Justice for not telling him that agents were “secretly investigating” Manafort during the 2016 presidential campaign.

Lord & Taylor to close storied flagship on Fifth Avenue
    POSTED 1:49 PM, JUNE 5, 2018,
    BY ASSOCIATED PRESS

NEW YORK — Lord & Taylor is abandoning plans to keep a store in the Fifth Avenue flagship it is selling, as the chain’s owner closes more stores and focuses on online sales.

The announcement Tuesday comes about seven months after the company said it would sell the century-old building to office space sharing company WeWork. Hudson’s Bay Co. said then it would keep less than a quarter of the 11-story building for a Lord & Taylor store.

Hudson’s Bay, which also operates Saks Fifth Avenue and other stores, said it expects to close up to 10 of its nearly 50 Lord & Taylor stores through 2019.

Lord & Taylor was the first to create Christmas windows for entertainment, rather than for selling merchandise. It pioneered the animated window display in 1938.

Fox News apologizes after Eagles’ Zach Ertz blasts national anthem ‘propaganda’
    Tom Schad, USA TODAY Sports Published 10:22 a.m. ET June 5, 2018 | Updated 11:34 a.m. ET June 5, 2018

Hours after Philadelphia Eagles tight end Zach Ertz and defensive lineman Chris Long criticized Fox News for showing footage of Eagles players praying before games — during a segment about protests during the national anthem — the network apologized for what it described as an “error.”

Christopher Wallace, the executive producer of Fox News @ Night, apologized for using the footage in a statement provided to USA TODAY Sports, explaining that it was “unrelated” to the matter of the segment.

“During our report about President Trump canceling the Philadelphia Eagles trip to the White House to celebrate their Super Bowl win, we showed unrelated footage of players kneeling in prayer,” Wallace said in the statement. “To clarify, no members of the team knelt in protest during the national anthem throughout regular or post-season last year. We apologize for the error.”

I think it’s good that so many Eagles players said “No, thanks” to Trump. But if Trump had any class, which he of course does not, he would not have withdrawn the invitation for the handful of players who did want to attend. He behaves like a narcissist because he is one.

SWAT team busts into home of Parkland teen David Hogg after hoax hostage call
    05 JUN 2018 AT 10:23 ET

A SWAT team entered the home of Stoneman Douglas shooting survivor and activist David Hogg on Tuesday morning after a hoax emergency call.

Media outlet Local10 reported that Broward Sheriff’s Office received a call claiming a hostage situation at the house.

The caller said that someone broke into the home with an AR-15 rifle and was holding the family at gunpoint.

A SWAT team surrounded the property before entering the home, according to NBC Miami. No one was home at the time.

Hogg is currently in Washington, D.C., with his mother to accept the RFK Human Rights award.

The teen has been calling for stricter gun laws in the wake of the deadly shooting at Marjory Stoneman High School, where 17 students and staff teachers were killed.

    • Ametia says:

Scare tactic to put fear into David Hogg and his family.

Hi voice is powerful and making a difference. The thuggery of someone to call law enforcement is dangerous and someone in the Hogg family (DAVID) could have been killed.

      • eliihass says:

Yup.. these are practically warning shots of intimidation and harassment being fired .. And trust that some on that swat team aren’t entirely on David’s side..

Can’t trust the police, and this forced entry into, and unsupervised access to their home under some pretense, while nobody was home, is rather unsettling …so hopefully, they know to have their home debugged..

His father is retired FBI, so he’ll know what should be done, and the reliable experts to call in..

Arkansas Pulls The Trigger On Nation’s First-Ever Medicaid Work Requirement
    By Alice Ollstein | June 5, 2018 6:00 am

This week, Arkansas becomes the first state in the nation, and in the nation’s history, to require its non-disabled adult Medicaid expansion population to work or volunteer 80 hours a month to maintain their health care benefits.

Starting Tuesday, Arkansans on Medicaid have to prove that they’ve worked 80 hours over the previous month or that they qualify for an exemption. If they fail to do so, they’ll be booted from the rolls after three months. Health care advocates in the state say they expect thousands of low-income people to lose coverage — both those who can’t find work and those who can’t navigate the state’s online-only system for documenting their hours. Health groups are also sounding the alarm about the paltry funding Arkansas has reserved for implementing the program — a tiny fraction of what other states are spending to put Medicaid work requirements in place.

Arkansas’ Medicaid work requirements rule is the third approved by the Trump administration but the first to go into effect, and it has the harshest penalty for non-compliance out of any state so far. It’s akin to a three-strikes-and-you’re-out policy, in which enrollees who fail to document their 80 hours per month of work three times during the year will lose coverage and can’t apply again until the following year.

Bernie Sanders’ Revolution Isn’t Carrying His Candidates Through The Midterms
    By Cameron Joseph | June 5, 2018 6:00 am

Sen.Sanders strode to the stage to raucous applause in pivotal Orange County on Saturday, just days ahead of California’s crucial primaries — and lit into Big Mickey Mouse while ignoring the looming elections.

“If a corporation like Disney has enough money to pay its CEO over $400 million in a four year period, it damn well has enough money to pay its workers at least fifteen bucks,” thundered the once and likely future presidential candidate, using his significant soapbox to tear into the Walt Disney Company on worker compensation to the delight of the thousands of union members gathered at a megachurch a short jaunt from Disneyland.

But he failed to mention even once the state’s impending primary elections, in which many of the assembled unions are working hard to ensure Democrats get on the general election ballot — and whose outcomes will play an outsized role in Democrats’ fight to win the House and stop President Trump’s agenda.

He failed to mention them, because HE COULD CARE LESS ABOUT THE 2018 ELECTIONS.

In fact, he wants the Democrats to do poorly in the 2018 elections.

FYI Bernie – California already has in place the raising of the minimum wage to $15. They’ve already taken care of that business.
