Wednesday Open Thread | LeBron James: “No one wants an invite” to the Trump White House

NBA star LeBron James on Tuesday knocked President Trump over the national anthem protest controversy, saying his team would not attend an event at the White House if they win their championship series.

“It’s typical of him. I’m not surprised,” James told reporters on Tuesday when asked about Trump this week disinviting the NFL Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles from the White House, according to USA Today.

James, who is participating in the NBA finals with the Cleveland Cavaliers, said that neither his team nor the Golden State Warriors want an invitation to a similar event celebrating their teams at the White House.

“I know no matter who wins this series, no one wants an invite anyway. It won’t be Cleveland or Golden State going,” he said, according to USA Today.

Trump abruptly announced on Monday that the Eagles would not visit the White House this week to celebrate their victory.

“The Philadelphia Eagles are unable to come to the White House with their full team to be celebrated tomorrow. They disagree with their President because he insists that they proudly stand for the National Anthem, hand on heart, in honor of the great men and women of our military and the people of our country,” Trump said in a statement.

“The Eagles wanted to send a smaller delegation, but the 1,000 fans planning to attend the event deserve better,” he added.

James on Tuesday also criticized Trump for not inviting the WNBA champions for a visit, telling journalists that it was “laughable” for the Minnesota Lynx to be excluded.

“For them not to be invited playing our beautiful game of basketball … those women are unbelievable at doing it,” he said.

The NBA star has previously criticized Trump, calling him a “bum” last year after Trump disinvited Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors from the White House after Curry said he didn’t want to go.

“Going to the White House was a great honor until you showed up!” James tweeted about Trump at the time.

He also encouraged future champions not to worry about getting a Trump invitation.

“Let’s not let someone inviting you from their house take away from their championship,” James told reporters. “Winning a championship is way bigger than getting invited to the White House, especially with him in it.”

      I’ll only add, a celebrity-shunned, celebrity-obsessed brutal dictator desperate for any sort of celebrity acknowledgement ..no matter how marginal;

And all too happy to settle for just about any Z-list celebrity who’s willing to show up and do a mutually-beneficial narcissistic ego-stroking ..and of course, photo-op..

    My people, my people..

Perhaps I missed it, but in 8 years I never heard Eddie Glaude reverentially refer to the historic first black First Lady as the ‘First Lady’..

Today I heard him refer so to a lazy, imported Birther, gold-digging 3rd wife who lied about having a college degree and boasted about writing a speech that was found to be plagiarized from the historic black FLOTUS..

Eddie who made no distinction ever, but routinely yoked in Mrs Obama in his hostile snark dripping critiques targeting her elected husband, (who Eddie was never pleased with), sat around a table today with others …and they all were careful to talk-up as ‘beautiful and classy, and deserving of her privacy’ the wife of the treasonous buffoon.. Careful to make a clear distinction …bending over to praise and boost and damsel-ize as usual..

    • eliihass says:

Just as it was always ‘Mr Obama’ ..But suddenly they all can’t stop lap-doggingly calling a treasonous buffoon ‘president’ …’the president’.. And actually stopping to quickly correct themselves if they slip up and call the buffoon by name …or fail to use the honorific before it..

It’s all just so crazy watching this comedy-sprinkled dystopian nightmare play out, one can’t decide whether to to laugh or cry..

Undocumented man faces deportation after delivering pizza to Brooklyn Army base
POSTED 4:25 PM, JUNE 6, 2018, BY NARMEEN CHOUDHURY AND ALIZA CHASAN, UPDATED AT 04:33PM, JUNE 6, 2018

BAY RIDGE, Brooklyn — A man is facing deportation after he delivered a pizza to an Army base in Brooklyn and leaders in the borough are doing all they can to bring him home.

“They treated me like a criminal. I did not commit a crime,” Pablo Villavicencio said in Spanish.

He spoke to PIX11 News from an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center in New Jersey.

“My daughters need me,” he said. “My wife needs me.”

His family said Villavicencio could be deported as early as next week.

Villavicencio said he was delivering pizza, as he has done countless times before, to the Fort Hamilton Army Base on June 1. He said he showed his New York State identification card at the security gate and was allowed inside.

But when he reached the delivery address, he said, he was confronted by another officer and asked to show another form of identification which he did not have.

Villavicencio said he was detained by military officers, one of whom called ICE. Since then Villavicencio has not seen his family.

    Pruitt Aide Resigns Amid Scandals
    Elaina Plott

A top aide to Scott Pruitt, Millan Hupp, resigned from the Environmental Protection Agency, according to a source briefed on the matter and documents reviewed by The Atlantic. Her last day will be Friday.

Hupp, who worked as the director of scheduling and advance, has been entangled in many of the scandals dogging EPA Administrator Pruitt. In March, she was one of two aides who received hefty salary bumps, even after the White House refused Pruitt’s request for raises. And as The Washington Post reported on Monday, she recently testified to the House Oversight Committee that she regularly spent her days doing personal tasks for Pruitt, from hunting for housing to calling the Trump Hotel in Washington, D.C., to inquire about purchasing a used mattress.

According to one top EPA official, the 26-year-old was “tired of being thrown under the bus by Pruitt,” and weary of seeing her name constantly appear in headlines about the agency. Officials began drafting her resignation paperwork on Monday morning, just after portions of her congressional testimony were made public.

Hupp’s testimony contributed to the long list of scandals and improprieties plaguing the agency—including, most notably, that Pruitt rented a Capitol Hill condo from an energy lobbyist for just $50 a month, and spent more than $40,000 on a soundproof booth in his office on the taxpayers’ dime. For months now, according to multiple White House and EPA sources, officials as senior as Chief of Staff John Kelly have lobbied President Donald Trump to fire Pruitt.

Giuliani says Mueller’s team is trying to frame Trump

JERUSALEM — Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani says special counsel Robert Mueller’s team is trying to frame President Trump.

Giuliani, who has been serving as Trump’s lawyer amid the Russia scandal, says Wednesday in Israel that Mueller’s team includes “13 highly partisan Democrats … (who) are trying very very hard to frame him to get him in trouble when he hasn’t done anything wrong.”

Speaking to the Globes capital market conference in Tel Aviv, Giuliani says Trump has the power to pardon himself but won’t because he is innocent.

It was the latest in Giuliani’s often contradictory comments surrounding the probe into Russia’s potential meddling in U.S elections.

The Duchess of Sussex is set to experience another royal ‘first’ when she visits Cheshire next week. Meghan will join the Queen for a day of engagements on Thursday, with the pair travelling up north using the monarch’s personal train that is only reserved for senior royals. Prince Philip, Prince Charles, the Duchess of Cornwall and their staff are the only people who are entitled to use the royal train; Prince William is only believed to have used it once in 2003 on his birthday tour, when he traveled to Wales, while Prince Harry and the Duchess of Cambridge are not thought to have ridden it before in an official capacity.

Described as Buckingham Palace on wheels, the lavish train is only used a handful of times a year. In 2017, it was used just 14 times at a cost of £900,000 to taxpayers. While it is very costly, it does provide a more comfortable ride for the 92-year-old monarch, especially when she travels overnight. The train, which was first used by Queen Victoria in 1842, has a luxurious smoking room, bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms and a 12-seater dining room.

Next Thursday, Meghan and the Queen will spend the day in Cheshire. They will open the Mersey Gateway Bridge before opening the Storyhouse Theatre – a fitting engagement for former actress Meghan, who was best known for her role in Suits. The pair will then attend a lunch at Chester Town Hall.

The Duchess’ day out with the Queen marks a milestone in her royal life. It is the first time she will carry out official duties without her husband Prince Harry, and will also be her first engagement with just the monarch. Meghan has previously accompanied the Queen on other engagements, such as at the Commonwealth Day service in March, but she was joined by other members of the royal family.

Don’t let Trump hear about this because he’ll try to demand a ride in it when he goes to the U.K. the same way he demanded that he be permitted to ride in the queen’s gold coach. I’ve read that May has told him being seen in London will not be a good move for him to attempt, so she has recommended that their meeting take place in another city. Imagine that, an American president who is so hated by the British that it is guaranteed he’d be met with a massive protest in London instead of a massive group of British citizens waiting to welcome him.

D-Day: How technology helped win the Normandy invasion and World War II
    By Michael S. Rosenwald
    June 6 at 6:00 AM

“I have full confidence in your courage and devotion to duty and skill in battle.” – General Dwight D. Eisenhower, in a message to troops before D-Day.

    Courage. Devotion. Duty.

They are the words most often used to describe the brave Allied troops who landed on Normandy 74 years ago and helped win World War II.

Not to be forgotten, though, is this word: Technology.

World War II was won not just with courage, devotion and duty, but with American and British technological advances that gave Allied troops the upper hand in many facets of battle.

The most famous and fearsome: the Manhattan Project atomic bombs that led to the surrender of the Japanese in 1945. But there were many others.

Radar helped the Allies know what was coming at them from the enemy.

Bombsights employing complicated gyroscope technology allowed planes to pinpoint bomb attacks. Before World War II, pilots simply dropped bombs by hand and hoped for the best.

Nylon, the synthetic material invented by DuPont for women’s stockings, was used to make parachutes, glider tow ropes, aircraft fuel tanks and flak jackets, according to Smithsonian magazine. Some people dubbed it “the fiber that won the war.”

But one of the most crucial bits of technology, the one that helped the Allies launch the surprise attack on Normandy, was the hull of a boat — the Higgins boat.

You have probably seen pictures of this hulking nautical miracle, the one that carried troops right onto Normandy’s beach.

It was built by a wily, hard-drinking inventor named Andrew Higgins, the man Dwight D. Eisenhower once credited with winning World War II.

“It is Higgins himself who takes your breath away,” Raymond Moley, a former FDR adviser, wrote in Newsweek in 1943. “Higgins is an authentic master builder, with the kind of will power, brains, drive and daring that characterized the American empire builders of an earlier generation.”

Florida Man Sets Black Neighbor’s ‘Flashy’ Car on Fire, Calls Him Racial Slur: Report

    Breanna Edwards
    Yesterday 12:06pm

Jealousy is never cute, beloved … especially on a white man. But here we are once again in Florida, this time in South Daytona, where a white man called his black neighbor a racial slur before setting the neighbor’s “flashy” car on fire.

    Florida, man.

Ronald Sweet was outside, washing and waxing his silver 2002 Mercury, when he was approached by 56-year-old Joseph Minor, who began to verbally attack him for no reason. Click Orlando reports that Minor told Sweet that he was “flashy” and tossed in a racial slur (because why not) before ultimately threatening that he would “take care” of him and his vehicle, warning him that his days were numbered.

“I hate you, nigger,” Minor said to Sweet, according to the Daytona Beach News-Journal.

After a verbal altercation, Sweet and his fiancee, Cecilia Jones, went inside their apartment for the night, I guess ignoring Minor, Click Orlando reports. About 10 minutes later, around 12:35 a.m. Sunday, Sweet heard an explosion and looked out to see his car on fire, and Minor walking away.

Sweet and Jones told police that this was not the first time Minor had made threats, adding that he often used racial slurs when talking to them and other residents.
